This time, I didn’t have to specially invent anything - the light gradually “leaves” even during normal operation. The reasons are natural: the installation of abnormal tires, the uneven draft of the springs, the replacement of a burnt out lamp, etc. So the desire to check and, if necessary, adjust the head light on your favorite vehicle was not surprising. Our task was to closely monitor the process. In a normal workshop, everything should happen like this:

- equalize the pressure in the tires, because the position of the headlights relative to the road depends on this;

- set the headlight range control to the “zero” position, after making sure that it is operational (it makes no sense to set up a faulty system);

- set the optical axis of the device parallel to the longitudinal axis of the machine: this can be done with the help of distance rods resting, for example, in the centers of the headlights, or by means of a sight when the horizontal line, drawn on the mirror fixed to the device’s stand, evenly touches paired body elements;

- check the horizontalness of the device according to the built-in level;

- combine the axis of the headlight and the device in height: this can be done by eye - the tolerance is plus or minus 3 cm;

- introduce a correction for lowering the beam: the value is taken from the reference book or from a sticker on the body (for example, 1.3%).

The results of practical experiments can be seen in the table at the end of the article.

It would seem that such a simple service should be offered at every corner, up to the gas station, where they do not disdain paid tire inflation and the sale of non-freezing in bottling. But no - the first metropolitan service, where they finally decided to adjust the headlights, we found only at the end of the day. The locksmith, exhausted by the narzan, having failed to find out what position the corrector should be in, stopped at the intermediate one, taking the word from us before the inspection that the cherished wheel should not be turned.

Covered with a thick layer of dust, he brought the device into working condition with the help of a dry cloth, very similar to the floor one. Her special wiped the headlights, adding a couple of scratches to the delicate polycarbonate caps. Due to the lack of knowledge of the process, he did all the operations by eye, not forgetting to evaluate the result at 500 rubles.

Taught by bitter experience, we directed the wheels to where the service is likely to be in demand - to car services near tool control points. Alas, the local staff was only interested in who “turned” our car - Ivan Ivanovich or Semyon Semenovich. Having learned that our application was preliminary (that is, we intended to present a working car to the PIK), the artisans together refused to work, citing the lack of a device.

And only in one of the workshops did you agree to meet us. Moreover, the headlights were personally regulated by the director of the institution! He did not use the sighting device, he did not set the headlight angle on the device, but he promised that there would be no problems during the technical inspection. The local "quality mark" cost only 300 rubles.

Dealers understand the aspirations of ordinary car owners like no other: for small jobs, many have established express services. When he was impatient, he jumped into the light - and after half an hour he left satisfied. That's just headlight adjustment in the treasured list for some reason did not get. Record as usual and wait a day or two. But at this station we were lucky - either there was no work, or a technological window was formed.

And although the master did not put the driver behind the wheel, and did not bother to check the tire pressure, the impression was generally positive. Walking around is a great thing! True, they rated it not cheap - at 800 rubles.

As usual, every visit to the dealer begins with a sink. This did not have her own - I had to go to the next lane on the public. But the car was relatively clean - for the headlights would have been enough bucket of water, brushes and suede. It soon became clear that, in addition to washing, there are no spare parts here - the sufferers are forced to run around the nearby shops. If we had a blown lamp, we would have to keep them company.

Lucky, there were no unscheduled shopping. The locksmith worked exactly like his previous colleague (almost, but not quite), but they took less here - 500 rubles.

They got into this dealership only by appointment. But what caused the popularity of the center of technical culture among the local population, they could not understand. The usual dirty repair zone, thoughtful locksmiths near the smoking room … We did not find a post for adjusting the headlights - the device was simply transported from car to car. However, the tiled floor could well meet the necessary requirements at any point on the surface.

But the measurement technology did not exactly correspond to the rules: the master also dispensed with the driver driving and checking tire pressure. To leave was as difficult as to get here: due to a failure in the radio connection between the entrance and exit gates (located 50 m from each other), we lost a good 15 minutes. The price of pleasure is 380 rubles.

The dealer is a dealer - even the simplest service is rendered in an adult way: with signing a lot of papers, a trip to a nearby car wash and thorough acceptance (for some reason, without checking the external lighting equipment prescribed by the manufacturer). The duties are just as strictly described: the owner drives the car to the master’s desk (it’s practically in the workshop), the receiver crosses the repair zone, and the locksmith takes the job.

Locksmiths seem to be baked in one incubator - he carried out the measurements in the same sequence and with the same errors as his predecessor colleagues. But the services here were rated more expensive - at 520 rubles.

The approach to business here turned out to be the most pragmatic: in order not to waste the time of the stationary post on trifles, the device was rolled out right into the acceptance zone. The mechanic got diligent, was not too lazy to preload the trunk from a rather massive belongings, as well as check and adjust the fog lights.

If not for the notorious tires, coupled with the driver, the procedure could be called exemplary. And the time spent is minimal - only 20 minutes. We don’t know how much the standard hour is here, but a short visit was estimated at the same 520 rubles.

If anyone knows how to please a fastidious client, these are dealers of a Japanese company. Everyone is surrounded with care, no matter what occasion he addresses. In our case, the main efforts of the staff focused on bringing the car into a divine form: before visiting the workshop, it was thoroughly washed, and after the work was completed, it was no less thoroughly vacuumed.

Unfortunately, this did not affect the quality of the main work - they did without a driver and a tire pressure gauge. It took a whole one and a half (!) Hours. Well, at least, they took relatively little money - 420 rubles.

Choose a workshop

You can’t find the marked wall in modern services - such a stand takes up too much space. An optical device is much more compact: thanks to the lens projecting the image onto a miniature screen, measurements can be made from 20 cm! However, here equipment is also subject to certain requirements.

1. The measuring platform should be perfectly flat (maximum slope of not more than 1%). In practice, this means that a special place is allocated for the procedure.
