Navigator

Let's arrange the competition: two crews will start across Moscow from point A to point B, each will be guided by the instructions of his navigator. On the way, we will appreciate both the convenience of the interface and the literacy of the route. Addresses were not selected for long - twice blindly poked a finger at the map: start on Ryabinovaya street near house number 45, finish on 83 Izmailovsky Prospekt.
MOBILE Yandex. CARDS
The free Yandex. Maps application has many advantages: it is adapted to all mobile operating systems, you don’t need to pay for traffic to MTS, MegaFon and Beeline subscribers, the Russian traffic assessment program has already gained considerable authority.
However, if you look, you can find a lot of minuses. We admit that using it on the go is not very convenient: there is neither a panoramic view, nor arrows on turns, nor voice prompts. But the search for addresses and points of interest is excellent, because the program does not search for information in the internal memory, but on the Web. Yes, and the coloring of the picture is good - the mass of multi-colored notes on traffic jams, road works and road accidents inspires hope for quick movement around the metropolis. But what to hope is better to check on yourself!
The menu of the Yandex. Traffic program shines with simplicity. If you are still stuck in transit, the route can be modified to reflect more relevant traffic information

So, start! On the clock 13:32. Without problems, we drove onto the Mozhayskoye Shosse, passed Poklonnaya Gora, turned on the instructions of the navigator to the Third Ring … and ran into a traffic jam in the tunnel under Leninsky Prospekt. Strange - no difficulties are indicated on the screen. They reached the intersection with the Warsaw highway by crawling. But then the "green" road really turned out to be free. And everything seems to be smooth - right up to the turn from Sokolina Gora 3th Street onto Budyonny Prospekt: to go left, as the navigator recommended, you would have to drive 15 meters along the oncoming lane.
So it won’t work! Turned to the right, to a reversal - the benefit had to pass only two hundred meters. But then everything went smoothly: we got quickly, without violating the Rules. And even the house number 83, hidden deep in the courtyards, was found without problems. As a result, the first crew was at the finish line at 14:37. An hour and five minutes is a decent result for a route longer than 32 kilometers laid through a busy city.
GOOGLE NAVIGATOR
The popularity of devices on the Google Android platform is growing like an avalanche. And on each of them, at the time of purchase, a free Google Navigator application was installed (until recently, I had to be content with a simpler Google Maps informer). The connection to the air is paid and depends on the volume of traffic and the tariffs of the operator.
Hero of television commercials - voice search in Google Navigator works well. Even if the system does not recognize your words the first time, it offers possible options. And more recently, the same function appeared in Yandex. Maps

Nice: the Google product is a complete navigation solution. On the screen there is a pseudo-three-dimensional picture (a flat map with a slope), convenient accompaniment with a clear indication of maneuvers, pleasant to hear and competent voice prompts. It is gratifying that when constructing a route, you can immediately choose an alternative path - for each of the options, the program will show you where the road is waiting for you and calculate the travel time. However, all this is wonderful in theory. But how in practice?
Started simultaneously with the second crew at 13:32. They traveled in parallel for quite some time - the programs laid almost the same routes. We also stood in a traffic jam on the Third Ring to the intersection with Warsaw, just turned onto the Enthusiasts highway. Only Google didn’t lead to Budyonny Avenue, but recommended turning to the Main Alley. Wait, there’s no left turn! You need to take to the right, in a special pocket, and from there carry out a maneuver. But the navigator does not know these subtleties.
After this incident, everything went smoothly … until at 14:45 the program announced that we had arrived at our destination. Excuse me, we are standing on the 9th Parkova, and to the house we need another three hundred or four hundred meters … in a straight line. But the navigator refused to enter the maze of courtyards, although he showed the destination on the screen. Take a walk
The map of the Google Navigator looks very good. But what is the flag in the lower left corner? This is our finish point, 83rd house on Izmailovsky Prospekt. It is assumed that the rest of the path must be walked

In our particular test, Yandex won. Although, taking into account the inferior interface and functionality, it is difficult to award him a victory. But Yandex turned out to be good as a source of relevant and fairly reliable information about the traffic situation. Google is closer to full-fledged navigation solutions, only the program is still damp and you have to pay operators for traffic. The money is small (the operator wrote off five rubles from our account for our voyage), but Yandex has completely free of charge.

WHO'S ON NEW?
It happened! The first smartphone with GLONASS navigation appeared on the shelves: the MTS-945 device, widely advertised as the Russian analogue of the iPhone. According to the characteristics, the Russian navigator phone is more likely to be close to the representatives of the budget class, such as Hayskrin-Cosmo (7990 rubles). Even the most ardent patriots can be scared off by the price of 945th - 10, 990 rubles. A little expensive for a communicator with rather modest characteristics.
A beginner does a good job with navigation. I was pleased that the device works immediately in two systems: GPS and GLONASS. Determines the position in place smartly. But the proprietary application "MTS Navigator" - with oddities. For example, each time it starts, it requires a connection to the server via GPRS. Not only will it cost separate (and considerable) money in roaming, but the connection is far from always established. Agree, it’s a shame to see the message instead of the route to the destination: “Connection is not available, the server is overloaded”.

The signal display window from space looks funny: it clearly indicates how many GLONASS satellites are above the head, but the import system is simply reported: 3+, that is, more than three. Particularly curious people can check the quality of reception using a separate utility: the device sees, as a rule, from six to nine Russian satellites and nine to ten American ones.
Nevertheless, the program is quite possible to use: it lays routes and reroutes quickly and takes into account traffic information. The map screen reads well, warnings about maneuvers are not late. If it weren’t for strange strange croaking voice prompts, they are exactly the same as in Garmin devices.
However, if you cannot find a common language with the MTS Navigator program, install any navigation software compatible with the Android platform - this is another advantage of the new smartphone.
Anti-cork navigators: Where the curve will take
