The Hyundai Solaris and Kia Rio bodies have the same power structure, but are “covered” with completely different body panels. And the differences in details only finalize the difference between related models. 1. Kia has family “gills” on its front wings - like, for example, its “older brother” Kia Optima. 2. Punching on the sidewalls differ in location and shape. 3. Exterior mirrors have different housings and can be used to accommodate turn signal repeaters. 4. Lighting Kia combined into a single composition with a grille, and Hyundai headlights - independent design elements. 5. The Kia false radiator grille itself is composite, while Hyundai has it integrated into the front bumper. 6. Because of this, Hyundai has a distinctive hood connector, while for Kia it runs along the upper edge of the radiator grill. 7. The hood of the Kia is devoid of the longitudinal punching that Hyundai has. 8. Plastic pads that complete the glazing line have a different shape. The Russian Rio is based on the Kia K2 sedan, intended for the markets of Southeast Asia - primarily Chinese. This model, unlike the European and American Kia Rio, has the same power structure of the body produced at the Hyundai Solaris plant in St. Petersburg, which greatly simplifies the organization of production of new items in the same enterprise. Actually, we expected such a development of events last year (see GZR No. 24, 2010).

The only official image of the Russian Kia Rio available at the time of the issue was this designer sketch. But he also gives an idea of how much Rio will look like K2. In fact, the difference between Hyundai Solaris and the domestic Kia Rio will come down to the exterior and interior design. Rio will receive family traits that are characteristic of all the latest models of the company, created under the leadership of Peter Schreyer. As for the design differences between our Rio and the Asian K2, they are, of course, possible. But the difference, if there is one, will manifest itself only in details.

The Asian Kia K2 there are various options that differ, in particular, the location of the side repeaters of direction indicators. In one case, they “nest” in the “branchial gaps” on the front wings (1). A more advanced version (2) provides for the placement of turn signals in the cases of exterior rear-view mirrors. In this case, the “gills” are decorated with chrome lining. Asian Kia K2 has various versions that differ, in particular, by the location of the side repeaters of direction indicators. But when preparing Kia Rio for production in Russia, it was fully adapted for operation in domestic climatic and road conditions. Increased ground clearance and crankcase protection are designed to protect the new Rio from possible "injuries." In addition, the car was equipped with front and rear mudguards and thoroughly worked out the anti-corrosion protection of the body. The increased capacity battery is designed to ensure reliable engine start at low temperatures.
Kia engineers also ensured good visibility in bad weather conditions, equipping Rio with three-point washer nozzles and heated windshield in the rest zone of the wipers. In addition, the volume of the washer fluid reservoir has been increased to 4 l, and the sensor indicates a low liquid level in it. Even for the upholstery, we picked up a special dirt-repellent Clean Touch fabric, and we learned to speak Russian on-board computer.

Inside, the Korean twins differ no less than outside. First of all, the difference in the architecture of the front panels is striking. The design of the dashboards is also completely different (1): at Kia, unlike Solaris, their scales are recessed into deep wells. The center console Kia (2) looks more modest, but in terms of functionality it is practically not inferior to Hyundai. In particular, the multimedia systems of both cars are capable of playing files from USB sticks. The corresponding connector on the Kia is covered with a rubber plug, as on mobile phones. It remains to add that since the start of production of Kia Rio the total number of employees of the St. Petersburg plant will reach 2100 people and the company will switch to a three-shift work schedule. Thanks to this, by the end of 2011, buyers will find about 20 thousand Kia Rio, and in 2012 - already about 100 thousand.

Production of Kia Rio in Russia starts exactly one month later, on August 15. This means that the equipment at the plant in the Leningrad Region has already been installed and debugged. First of all, we are talking about a new die tooling for body panels.
It is not yet known what other components and components will be immediately produced on site, but the range is assumed to be wide. Indeed, at the same time that Hyundai Solaris was launched last fall, Koreans in the vicinity of the plant put into operation a whole complex for the operation of subcontractors.
