Initially, versatility was limited only to agriculture, then, already as part of the Daimler Benz company, the machine mastered a number of military specialties, and subsequently dozens of peaceful ones: a janitor, a washer, a loader, etc.
Against the background of the primary task, multifunctionality, the basic concept of the chassis is unchanged - compactness and maximum possible cross-country ability. From here - a short base, minimal overhangs, weight distribution along the axes in a proportion close to 50/50, axles with final drives, providing high ground clearance, cardan shafts in tubular casings, suspension rods in the suspension that reduce the likelihood of diagonal hanging, multi-stage transmission and mechanical blocking all differentials "in a circle." Moreover, the purpose of the chassis is reflected in the designation of the model: if after the letter U there are two zeros (for example, U400) - a machine with an eye on multifunctionality, and if three (U5000), then its main task is to bring the load or work add-on from point A to point B on the most extreme off-road. That is why, despite the wide unification of the units, the frames of the machines of both families are significantly different: for “multifunctional” it is simple, with straight side members, and for all-terrain vehicles it is more rigid, with arcuate bends over the bridges.
