In the last year’s issue of the Za Rulem newspaper, No. 15, we already talked about Lada Granta, a promising new product in the domestic automobile industry and the main hope for the revival of the Togliatti automobile plant. In anticipation of the official presentation, we decided to once again return to this topic, relying on the latest information. Our artist tried to reproduce the details of the appearance of Granta, but paid special attention to the proportions of the car. We can assure you - the original will not differ much from what is shown in the picture.
Let's start with the main thing - with the price. Last time we said that there are three main contenders for an early replacement on the VAZ conveyor: the “classic”, the Samara family and, naturally, the Kalinovsky sedan. Vazovtsy assumed that the price tag for the basic version of Granta would be 180-200 thousand rubles. Six months ago, we considered these figures too optimistic and “threw” another 20 thousand. But do not build illusions - even in the adjusted 220 thousand rubles, the novelty is unlikely to fit. The most likely starting price is 230–240 thousand. Therefore, for the “classic” Granta is not a competitor. And not the fact that with the advent of the latter, rear-wheel drive cars will sink into oblivion. Despite all the assurances of the VAZ.
And Samara and Kalina sedan will definitely be a thing of the past. They also promise that over time Granta will acquire a hatchback. But the station wagon is not supposed in the family, so nothing threatens this version of Kalina.

In general, you need to be clearly aware: the "budget" positioning of new items is mostly from marketing craftiness. In fact, the main task in the development was reduced to the widest possible reach of the potential consumer audience. From this point of view, the emergence of a frankly poor version was vital, against which other options would be perceived as naturally adequate in value. Judge for yourself, here is the poorest modification: unpainted bumpers, door handles and rear-view mirror housings, along with frankly Spartan trim, where even the glove box cover is missing. All engineering is minimized - neither power steering nor ABS are provided. And here is the top version: painted bumpers with fog lights, side moldings, a rich interior with all-formed door trim and high-quality fabric on the seats, electric power steering, climate control with air conditioning, ESP and even an automatic transmission. How do you like the spread? So do not be surprised if the price of the top version comes close to the Logan one in a similar configuration or, in any case, will not be much inferior to it.

But that is not all. Due to the greatly increased rear overhang, the Granta is almost equal in length to the Priora. If you consider that Kalina was almost as big as the latter in terms of interior space, and the trunk of the new car is likely to be larger, then potentially Lada Granta will compete with the formally older classmate. Here is a collision looming! However, this phenomenon is quite dialectical, if you recall the year in which the VAZ-2110 appeared (and the Lada Priora, in fact, is a restyling of the "top ten"). Given that AvtoVAZ and its French partners intend to put on the conveyor a full-fledged Class C model (which, without a doubt, will be more expensive than the Priora), Granta can replace it in a completely natural way.

So, Lada Granta will be the first (!) VAZ car offered on the market according to the normal laws of marketing: one model in the class and many different price sets. The rudiments of this approach were traced earlier (for example, VAZ-2101/03 or VAZ-2105/07). But then the plant, on the contrary, called each version a new model in order to report on its “unprecedented” successes.
