Words about the immortality of the W114 / W115 models are not a literary hyperbole. To verify this, just visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum, one of the exhibits of which is an instance of the 1976 model 240D. He got to the museum in 2004, when his mileage was 4.6 million kilometers - the Greek taxi driver Gregorios Sakinidis managed to wind up so much, replacing only two diesel engines in all this time. This is an undoubted record, but many Mercedes-Benz W114 and W115 calmly overcome a million kilometers.

"Fifteenth" is a budget option: it put 4-cylinder gasoline engines with a capacity of 95-115 hp either 4- or 5-cylinder diesels from 55 to 80 “horses”. Not only taxi drivers, but also farmers who nicknamed the Schweine-Daimler (“Pig Daimler”) car fell in love with diesels. The same nickname was then assigned to the diesel W123. The maximum speed was 125 km / h, and he scored a hundred in 31 s (like a VW Beetle). Another nickname of the 115th workaholic was HeizÖlferrari ("Diesel Ferrari").

The interior of the 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 CE was the pinnacle of excellence for middle-class cars of the time. In the cheap versions, the finish was simpler: instead of light plastic, dark was used, there was no wood trim on the dashboard, the seat upholstery was ordinary vinyl, and not combined, without inserts of "Scottish" fabric. The basic version of the W114 / W115 sedans had a rather modest interior, but this was offset by many options that brought the final cost of the car to astronomical heights. On request, electric windows were installed on the front and rear doors, a sunroof (as an option with an electric drive), head restraints, an armrest, air conditioning, a Becker radio, headlight washer, alloy wheels, central locking and even additional audible signals.
The most modest sedan was estimated at 13, 000 Deutschmarks, and a modification with a 280E engine and all the options could reach forty thousand. Externally, it is possible to distinguish an expensive “bar stroke” from a cheap one only by additional bumpers (“halves” under the main one) and chrome trim on the side windows. Versions for the American market were distinguished by headlights reinforced by bumpers, and the speedometer and odometer were graduated in miles. Different versions of different years. The latter are already without vents in the front doors, with larger side mirrors, a safety wheel, and an enlarged trunk handle. You can find out the front wings of a modified shape and lower radiator trim …

Production of the W114 / W115 models ceased in December 1976. By that time, the new W123 had already been assembled on the conveyor for several months in a row, but the number of orders for the "bar-acht" constantly pushed his departure. Most of all taxi drivers were grieving for the cessation of production - the 123rd did not yet gain such confidence from them as its predecessor. Perhaps that is why Gregorios Sakinidis never changed his car, having driven almost forty years behind the wheel of his only and beloved Mercedes-Benz W115 240D.
