Sooner or later, everyone is faced with candles, and even more so a car enthusiast. It’s worth refueling whatever - and engine outages are guaranteed. A ride, not paying attention to the burning Check Engine light, is often more expensive: if at least one candle fails, the converter can suffer. The culprit is easy to determine - by gasoline-filled electrodes and a characteristic smell.

Most often, candles are poured in winter when the engine starts. Sometimes the reason is not only “non-combustible” fuel, but also its own oversight: out of habit, I pressed the gas pedal - the candles instantly flooded. You won’t start a motor with such ones, because the electrons, as you know, “run” along the path of least resistance - along wet soot, bypassing the spark gap. Of course, there will be no flashes without a spark.

Sometimes just blowing out the candles by turning on the starter with the accelerator pedal fully depressed. In this mode, the electronics shuts off the nozzles and the fuel that is not burnt in the cylinders disappears. It did not help - you have to take the tool and change the candles to dry ones. Let not new, but obviously serviceable and cleared of a deposit. We advise you to have them in stock. And although candle manufacturers consider their products to be disposable (due to the crease washer), in practice they can be reused, tightening a little harder.

EQUATION OF CONDITIONS

There are ten cars in our test: Hyundai Accent, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi-Lancer, Renault Logan, Daewoo Nexia, Chevrolet Lacetti, Mazda -3 ”and two“ Frets ”-“ Kalina ”and“ Priora ”. For the purity of the experiment, all work was carried out in the Zarulevsky technical center by the forces of our mechanic Evgeny Mikhalkevich. That is, in one place and by the master of one qualification - in this way the conditions are identical. The main criterion for assessing labor intensity is the time spent on replacement: the less it is, the better. The average result after three attempts is counted.

By the way, the spread turned out to be small - no more than 5%. We do not take into account the regulated resource of candles specified in the instruction manual, since both cheap candles and expensive iridium and platinum die from harmful gasoline. The necessary tool is at hand, so we don’t spend time on excessive vanity. It is unlikely that someone will bring a torque wrench with him, therefore we will tighten the candles with a short wrench with a shoulder of 10–15 cm. Then we will not have enough strength to exceed the required moment of 25 N • m (for turnkey candles).

Least of all carried with "Logan" - 5 minutes 32 seconds. Its eight-valve is the only one without a decorative cover on top of the motor: one less concern. True, there is another problem: before you unscrew the candles, you need to clean the dirt from the wells, so as not to litter the engine. Awl is great for this. In a circular motion, we separate the dirt adhering around the candles and purge the wells with a tire pump with a nozzle nozzle on the hose. If there is no awl, take a wire or a piece of stranded wire, building from it a kind of brush. Well, and without a pump, we believe no one goes.

The second place was earned by Accent.

A similar layout have engines "Lacetti" and "Nexia", which took third and fourth places, respectively.

Here, not only decorative pads are available, but also high-voltage wires equally laid in the recess of the valve cover. They, like the conclusions of the ignition coils, are numbered - you will not confuse anything.

General rule - do not pull on the wires, only on the tips! Their landing is sometimes a little tight, so the tool kit should have pliers with curved jaws. When tightening the fasteners, do not apply excessive force, otherwise you will tear up the threaded bushings mounted in the plastic valve cover with the root.

In fifth place, “Focus” is the first car in the test with individual ignition coils (1.8 liter engine). Fuss with them more: each is secured with a “10” turnkey screw, you need to disconnect the wiring connectors. But the decorative engine cover here sits on three rubber buffers - just pull it up.

Do not be surprised when, when installing the coils, they themselves will rise from the wells, making it difficult to make fasteners. The fact is that the contact on the candle is spring loaded for greater reliability.

Among other inconveniences, we note that the engine is far removed from the front end, so you have to constantly stretch and get tired noticeably faster. In addition, the hood limiter, which works for additional alarms, interferes - and strives to scratch it. But set the signaling from an authorized dealer.

“Kalina”, oddly enough, showed only the eighth result. And although there were no serious difficulties with her, in the very first attempt I lost time looking for a coil bolt. Fasteners fell off the key and rolled between the valve cover and the intake manifold. Henceforth, they worked with a magnet, sticking it to the tool.

With Priora it is even more difficult: first you need to remove the adsorber ventilation valve from the decorative engine cover. On the experimental machine, an old-style mount - with a metal clip-retainer, however, has long been broken and discarded as unnecessary. No wonder: with such a design, it is extremely difficult to disassemble the joint without damaging anything (ЗР, 2008, No. 1).

Around the end of 2008, the plant changed its mount - it became much more convenient. For the rest, as with Kalina: we also call a magnet for help, so as not to lose the fasteners, and before installing the cover we do not forget to lay the wiring and the gas cable in the clamps on the intake manifold.

Longest carried with the “Corolla”. During this time, it would be possible to serve Logan or Accent twice! Firstly, it is difficult to disconnect the connectors from the coils - the efforts of the fingers are simply not enough. I had to pick up the antennae on the pads with a thin screwdriver. Secondly, the visor of the bulkhead of the shield overhangs and hinders the candle wells. Consequently, the candles cannot be twisted with a direct tool; a composite extension cord with a cardan is needed. As a result, extra time and worse result.
