The Russians have to master the new wisdom of the automotive industry - AvtoVAZ becomes a full partner of the Renault-Nissan alliance. For the first time in history, a Russian company has the opportunity to stand on a par with the world's leading car manufacturers. Will it work out? Quite, says South Demarchelier (Hugues Desmarchelier), AvtoVAZ vice president of products and programs. It is he who plans the LADA lineup, which will soon be related to the Japanese-French auto industry along the line of the B0 platform.

Why is the B0 platform so good?

- The platform was developed by Renault in order to achieve the best balance of functionality, quality, driving performance and price. At first it was intended primarily for Romania and other countries of Eastern Europe, but after the launch of the Logan car in 2004, Renault realized that the B0 was of interest to Western Europe, where Logan successfully debuted in 2005. Today, even in times of crisis, the plant in the Romanian city of Pitesti is operating at full capacity. A number of other models have been developed on the B0 platform. This is Sandero, Logan MCV (in Russia such a car has not yet been presented, but is successful in Europe), a long-base pickup and Duster. Platform B0 is a little less than 6 years old - she is young. I am not entitled to disclose all Renault projects, but I can say that this platform will live for a long time. You can imagine how many more diverse cars will be created on its basis! Including it is planned for use by Nissan.

How will the platform be used at AvtoVAZ?

- AvtoVAZ will begin the development of B0 with a car, which we conditionally call LADA RF90. This car assumes, first of all, an increased interior volume and ample opportunities for transformation. The car has seven seats, and you can leave only five. If you fold all the rear seats, we get a large luggage compartment. When mastering this car at AvtoVAZ, the front-end design will be changed to adapt to the LADA corporate identity, and interior changes will also be made. This model will be sold under the LADA brand in Russia, Ukraine and in most CIS countries.

The LADA RF90 development project envisages the creation of a new production line in Togliatti, including welding, painting and assembly workshops, where cars under the brands LADA, Renault and Nissan will be produced simultaneously. This is the first step that will help AvtoVAZ overcome the crisis and return to stable profitability.

The second strategic step should be the use of the B0 platform to create your own line of cars. Here the idea is simple and tested - to use all the features of the platform to create a completely individual car. At the same time, we plan to update current families, for example, Priora cars. But there are ideas to include in the AvtoVAZ lineup fundamentally new models for him - crossovers or cars of a similar segment. All LADA cars are well adapted to Russian conditions, and new models will possess this quality.

What do you mean by the term “platform”?

- In fact, this is a concept. Speaking about the platform, we mean the components of the chassis, the engine compartment, as well as what can be called the front end construction. The main idea of the platform is to maintain a maximum of common components and ensure cost effectiveness.

AvtoVAZ stopped the first thread of the conveyor. When will preparation for production begin here?

- We are now discussing with suppliers of components and equipment issues related to the start of work. Preparation of the line itself starts at the beginning of the second half of the year and will continue throughout the eleventh year.

Can you name the equipment suppliers?

- The list has not yet been determined. Definitely, we can now name only one of the manufacturers of equipment and accessories - this is AvtoVAZ. The company has the highest level of integration in the world, and is able to create almost anything - machines, robots, dies … We make the most of our own capabilities.

Has a technological study of the development of the platform B0 been carried out?

- The welding workshop will be left in existing buildings, but equipped with new equipment. The paint shop will also be completely updated, now the main scenario involves the construction of a separate building. For assembly, the existing main building will be used. The development strategy of AvtoVAZ provides - after the development of new models on new lines, two more lines will need to be modernized. As a result, AvtoVAZ should have 4 modern production lines in its assets: the LADA Kalina workshop and three threads of the main conveyor.

Will the LADA RF90 initially be assembled from assembly kits?

- This is by no means an end in itself! If we want to be effective in the Russian market, we must ensure the maximum level of localization from the very beginning - the exchange rate poses a serious risk to the project, therefore we cannot afford to allow the profitability of AvtoVAZ to depend on fluctuations in the euro exchange rate. We set a goal - to achieve the best level of localization as quickly as possible. And I hope that very quickly we will be able to provide 65 percent of the total cost of the car in the form of localized components and materials. We also want to ensure maximum engine localization, but this implies a higher level of investment in large components. Therefore, the rate of localization of the engine will be slightly lower than that of cars.

Tests conducted at AvtoVAZ showed that LADA RF90 needs to be adapted to Russian conditions. Will any work be done in this direction?

- Of course, the changes will be made that are necessary at the conclusion of our engineering service. But in general, the car has already confirmed its reliability. This is true for Logan, which is sold here. Of course, the RF90 for Russia does not exist yet, so you need to be careful: the payload of this car is higher, and we will definitely listen to the recommendations of the engineering service. Particular efforts will be made to adapt the car to work in cold climates. I am sure that the RF90 will respond well to Russian conditions.

What is the estimated capacity for the production of cars on the B0 platform at AvtoVAZ?

- The optimum conveyor speed is 1 car per minute, 60 cars per hour. To provide higher productivity, after the models of our partners appear on the conveyor, the line will work in 3 shifts. In fact, in the long run, we must strive to ensure that all AvtoVAZ lines operate in 3 shifts. Ideally, 1 million cars should leave AVTOVAZ assembly lines annually (70% under the LADA brand).

At the presentation of the AvtoVAZ anti-crisis program, you said that you plan to remove “internal cannibalism”. But there are already concerns that the Priora station wagon will be “eaten up” by the LADA RF90 car …

- The RF90 differs from the Priora because it is seven-seater and more spacious, with a higher landing. And the consumer this car is focused on is different from the consumer who buys Priora. I am sure that between these two machines there will be a minimum of cannibalism. My words confirm the sales of Logan and Priora sedans, which are positioned in different ways. Both the one and the other car show a good result in the Russian market. Logan is definitely a car for pragmatic buyers who want a functional car. And Logan is well used in big cities. The Priora buyer wants from the car not only functionality, but also a certain status. Station wagon Priora and Lada R90 will be equally clearly divided into different market niches.

When it becomes known exactly which Renault and Nissan models will be assembled on the same line with the LADA RF90?

- As usual, Renault and Nissan disclose accurate information on their projects at the latest, so even when we see the first cars on the line, the partners will ask us to keep confidential for some time …

Will NTC AvtoVAZ take part in the development of cars on the B0 platform?

- Of course - none other than AvtoVAZ and its engineering service will develop these cars. To make a car under the LADA brand, you need to be as close to the consumer as possible, and only our engineering service will be able to cope with this task. Of course, joint work with Renault and Nissan engineers is also to be done to ensure the unification of components.

The work of the engineering service is not limited to the B0 platform - we are still working on a budget car, a project that is very important for AvtoVAZ.

But no matter what platform we use, we always need to think about the consumer, ensure sufficient profitability so that, by releasing cars, we will provide ourselves with a resource for preparing production of further models. And the task of the engineering service is to create such new models.

The platform itself is not a machine yet, it is a concept, and it can be used as diversely as possible. We are the main player in the Russian car market, we can’t weaken the brand’s position, but rather, strengthen them, improve the quality and image of cars in the eyes of consumers. Like Fiat in Italy, Volkswagen in Germany, Renault and Peugeot in France - in many countries where the national brand occupies the largest market share. 20 years ago in France everyone said that the domestic market would be completely destroyed - the Japanese and Germans were coming, we would lose the share of sales. 20 years have passed - this did not happen. And in Russia it will be the same. They criticize us, but if people have the opportunity to buy their own, Russian, in most cases they will do just that. We have no choice but to be ambitious.
