For testing, we chose one of the safest cars today - Volvo-XC60 - with a rich arsenal of electronic devices designed to increase safety and comfort. These are systems of varying complexity - from fairly primitive parking radars, known even to owners of low-cost models, to original and highly intelligent devices that are ready to insure the driver in difficult situations. Check out how they work in our harsh environment.

BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) insures the driver when changing lanes from a collision with cars moving in the same direction. The cameras in the exterior mirrors scan the space behind the machine. If a car appears in an adjacent row to the right or left, a lamp lights up near the corresponding mirror, signaling a danger. PURITY - SAFETY SECURITY

The experiments on the sparkling washed up sides of the car began on the way to the landfill. The necessary buttons are pressed, checkmarks are put in the menu - all systems are activated. I set the cruise control allowed 90 km / h, got in behind the truck and removed his legs from the pedals. “Volvo” obediently trudged along a low-speed boat, accelerating and braking regularly, until a scorcher wedged between us on the road, playing tag. After calculating the situation, I did not even twitch. But the autopilot, having discovered a new object in dangerously close proximity, first slowed down significantly, and when he left the row, only after some thought he added gas. Yes, this is not Europe with its polite and well-predicted movement - automation cannot take into account many factors related to our organization and culture of behavior. Therefore, in Russia, especially in large cities, it is better to rely on yourself than on electronic assistants. As a confirmation: the system that monitors the car’s departure from the lane didn’t work - the markings in our spring faded too painfully. But, like illumination, light bulbs warning right or left on cars warning in neighboring rows - especially irritable ones will quickly turn off this function, calm ones will simply stop paying attention to prompts.

ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) - adaptive cruise control. It supports not only speed, but also the distance to the car driving in front. The distance is determined by a radar installed in the grille, and the system controls the engine and service brakes. The driver only needs to set the speed from 30 to 200 km / h and the distance to the object using the steering column switch. ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) - adaptive cruise control.

LDW (Lane Departure Warning) warns the driver if the car leaves the lane. The system using the camera continuously monitors the location of the car on the road and gives an alarm if Volvo leaves the row. Naturally, provided that the driver was not turning on the direction indicator. LDW operates at speeds above 65 km / h. LDW (Lane Departure Warning) warns the driver if the car leaves the lane. Already on the roads of the landfill checked parking systems. Amazing: thanks to the wide horizons of the rear view camera, you can control the distance to the obstacles with an accuracy of centimeters - the edge of the rear bumper gets into the field of vision, which is very easy to navigate. Even parking radars are not needed, although they, by the way, work perfectly.

The rear view camera helps control the situation when driving backward. A picture appears on the monitor located on the center console when reverse gear is engaged. Hint lines informing about the distance to the obstacle are also displayed on the screen. The rear view camera helps control the situation when driving backward. For the appetizer, the most interesting and scary test remained - to check the City Safety collision avoidance system. The stern of the expensive German SUV is getting closer. Another moment … I hiccuped ABS, the car nodded and stopped half a meter from the obstacle. Automation worked at the last moment, but I managed to estimate the cost of repairs. However, it’s not at all unprofitable, because in front of me … a foam model.

CLOSE EYES

A few hours later, it was hard to recognize the Volvo-XC60 in this dirty pile. Let's see how the electronics will sing now.

The first to vote was the parking system. Works! True, once - sometimes it passes objects, and sometimes it sees something that is not in a radius of several tens of meters. The rear view camera is not an assistant. Her round eye bulges blindly from the dirt after several kilometers along dirty or snowy roads. Apparently, developers should think about how best to protect the all-seeing eye. One of the options is offered by Volkswagen: on the new Golf, for example, the camera is covered with an emblem that opens only when reverse gear is engaged.

Almost as quickly, digital cameras in the side mirrors fail, and with them the BLIS system. At least the car warns that you should not count on it - an appropriate message arrives on the instrument panel. In the same scenario, the situation with adaptive cruise control is unfolding: the radar is blocked and the autopilot stops working. Naturally, at the same time as the ACC, the Distance Alert system also dies, which receives information from the same radar and warns the driver by flashing LEDs and an audible signal about approaching the vehicle in front.

But the LDW system continued to keep watch. The marking recognition camera was prudently located behind the windshield in the wiper area. Although the manufacturer warns: with heavy rain, snowfall or fog, malfunctions are still possible. And despite the fact that City Safety sensors are located there, under the windshield, with a sinking heart, he began the last test. The foam BMW is already in position, a short acceleration with a course right on it … and the electronics prevented the accident.

THINK YOURSELF, SOLVE YOURSELF

When driving on a dirty road, you should be as careful as when driving in heavy rain, fog and ice. Splattered glass and mirrors make it difficult to see not only those sitting behind the wheel, but also electronic assistants, whom we sometimes trust the most precious thing - our life. Therefore, advice to drivers: be wary of the tips of such systems, especially in difficult weather conditions. I hope manufacturers will hear me (not only Volvo, but others who have already implemented such systems) - better protect the eyes and ears of electronic assistants, at least on cars shipped to Russia. After all, suspension and engines are adapted for different markets. Maybe you should provide additional protection for sensors and radars? Then you can not be afraid to hit the face in the mud (in every sense). And the costs will pay off, do not hesitate.

RIDE OR PLAY?

Maxim Sachkov: “A modern car is hung with sophisticated systems and devices, like a Christmas tree with garlands and toys. Design thought does not stand still, from generation to generation of bells and whistles is added. And marketers insistently convinced that these things are vital. In fact, many know-how is not so much faithful helpers in the struggle for safety and comfort, as expensive toys that significantly increase the price of a car. For example, adaptive cruise control. It's funny to try it out, to brag about this curiosity to your friends … and never to use it again, because in our stream it is inconvenient. And such a “show” will cost several tens of thousands of rubles. Although there are enough gourmets who are ready to spread round sums for the wonders of technology. Well, let them enjoy. Only other buyers should be saved from overpayments for unnecessary features. Let these “toys” remain among the options. Do not forget that the car should primarily drive well, and only then serve as a means of communication and entertainment.”
