I WANT TO PRISON

The editor-in-chief was skeptical of my undertaking: one day in the “state-owned house” is not a deadline. To write clearly and truthfully, you need to really serve 15 days! Dostoevsky sat in prison and the immortal Notes from the Dead House were born … I must admit that I myself would have gone for such an experiment, but the heads of the Moscow Central Internal Affairs Directorate objected: “For what? - they say. “There are no legal grounds.” Theoretically, there was a way out, but of his own free will to commit an offense for which they put him in jail was not drawn. To do this, we must, for example, first deprive me of a driver’s license for something, then get drunk, get behind the wheel, and when they catch me, refuse a medical examination. Or to crash into a tram with all the dope and leave the scene of a traffic accident … In short, excuse me, the editor-in-chief, but I had to agree to the proposal of the city police department to visit the prison house for a short visit. On one day.

“Baby! Don't you think your place is near the bucket?”

But vivid impressions were enough.

WELCOME

For some reason, I was expecting to hear this phrase when the photographer and me, not finding the bell, knocked with a fist on the iron door of the special detention center, which is in the heart of the block on Simferopol Boulevard.

- Documents! - the policeman demanded strictly. I checked my papers, wrote something down in a magazine and only then let it inside. When a heavy door slammed behind us, anxiety fell on our souls …

In Moscow, there are only two special detention centers for "persons arrested in an administrative order." Exactly so, it’s difficult and intricate, but according to the wording of the law, local prisoners are called - so that there are no analogies with ordinary prisons. Compared to these places of detention, the detention centers are a real paradise: feeding more or less, and the cells are spacious, and there is round-the-clock medical care. The cameras are not empty: in just 10 months of 2009, 1, 666 people “rested” in “our” special detention center. Of these, under the "driver" articles - 841. For leaving the accident scene - 103 people, the rest were caught drunk and without rights (or "powerless" citizens refused to go to the doctor for examination). Apparently, the toughening of punishments for drinking has played a role: the number of prisoners among the drivers has decreased, two special detention centers are quite enough for a huge metropolis.

“TO THE WALL, HANDS FOR THE BACK!”

Such commands do not sound here. And in general, nothing so formidably humiliating that he saw in the cinema is not practiced here. My stay in a special detention center began with paperwork. Is the passport, judge’s order of arrest ok? We assume that so. No prohibited items? No, honestly! Checked - it is. And they even left glasses for me, believing the word that I will use them only for their intended purpose. The next step is to see a doctor. A medical examination before being placed in the chamber is passed to all beginners, without exception. I was mentally prepared for a detailed examination (and inspection), but, as it turned out, the data on the diseases were recorded in the arrested person’s card according to him.

I’m glad that there are no serious diseases, but I would like a separate camera … I’m glad that there are no serious diseases, but I would like a separate …

- And if the arrested person suffers from a serious illness and hides it?

“If he himself does not say about the disease and it is impossible to establish it during a visual examination, then he will go to the cell,” the doctor answered.

Wow! Something I do not like this approach at all. And if my cellmate hides that he has tuberculosis?

The policeman led the stairs down to the cell. The clang of the opening lock acts on the nerves and makes you start. It seems to be clean around, the escort politely treats me, and yet the situation is oppressive. I don’t want to enter the camera at all. After all, I know that all this is not real, pretentious, but still not at ease.

Sitting on such beds is uncomfortable, sleeping too. And if the cellmate is still snoring … Sitting on such beds is uncomfortable, sleeping too. And if another cellmate snores …

The camera turned out to be a rather large and bright room, but very official. Eight iron beds, bedside tables … I remember that such beds were in our pioneer camp. From the backs we broke out metal bars-tubes to spit clay. But there are no rods - security requirements … So, what is this? The famous “bucket” in the corner is a latrine without any fence. Yes, this is not the cozy double cameras that are shown in foreign films! And how many generations of prisoners slept on these beds? I just sat down - immediately fell almost to the floor … But it's already one o'clock in the afternoon - they’re calling for lunch!

Duty in the kitchen is voluntary. Duty in the kitchen is voluntary.

KITCHEN outfit

Gain in weight here just will not succeed! The budget allocates 81 rubles for the nutrition of one violator per day. We, the prisoners, were pampered with cabbage soup for the first, porridge with meat sauce for the second. And to everyone a glass of compote. They issued a "solder" to me. Not a restaurant, but overall quite edible. True, the portion is small. Therefore, all the inmates “catch up” with bread - you can take it in plenty. And also, my cellmates explained, they help transfer from relatives. But this can only be obtained once during the entire arrest. The list of products and their quantity are limited by strict police regulations. One of the "colleagues in misfortune" complained that the parcel from the wife never reached …

Prisoners are happy to beg on duty in the kitchen. Washing dishes, maybe not very nice, but at least some variety in dull weekdays. According to the law, no one can make them work, and for a long time there are no orders for a meat factory, or even for a construction site. If you want to work on the territory - please, just sign the paper that you do it of your own free will. There are many who wish, but in the kitchen you can also sniff.

SKY IN THE CELL

After lunch, they allowed to walk along the street. True, the “street” is said loudly: a courtyard fenced with a high fence with a barbed wire stretched from all sides. A suitable place to reflect on the meaning of life. According to the schedule, free time is now (if this word is applicable here): you can read books and look through the magazines that you transmitted from will. It has its own library - a pair of frayed books without covers and several magazines with crosswords. Unraveled, of course.

Многие от безделья с радостью соглашаются на любую работу. Тем более на свежем воздухе

Many from idleness with pleasure agree to any work. Especially in the fresh air. Many from idleness with pleasure agree to any work. Especially in the fresh air.

The condition is unusual - there is nothing to be done!.. After another two hours, I begin to feel an insane desire to escape. I'm not scared - disgusting. State-compulsory situation, a failed couch, bars, people in uniform. And in general, the tastelessness, the indecentness of vegetation - everything presses so hard on my brains and nerves that I am ready to immediately stop the experiment and run away. The recent readiness to spend two weeks here has evaporated! The editor-in-chief was right - I could not stand the test, I can’t sit in the detention center for a day … However, there are lovers of such exotics. For example, one lady with enviable constancy sits behind the wheel of a podshof, although she has long been stripped of her rights. Police officers regularly detain her, and the justice of the peace sends her to a special detention center. She is honestly serving time (women in the same building, but they have a separate floor and their own entrance) - and again behind the wheel!.. However, most of the guests of the special reception are not happy with their stay. I don’t know what conclusions each made for himself, but the cellmates all flatly refused to take pictures for our magazine.

… When we again found ourselves on a Moscow street and the door of the special detention center slammed behind us, the photographer and I sighed deeply. How wonderful and beautiful everything is here! But "before serving" we did not notice this …
