The product, in common people called non-freezing, must perform two main tasks. The first of them is obvious and follows from the most vernacular name: the product should not freeze, thicken in severe frost. But the second is not for everyone and does not immediately come to mind. It flows from the official name - “windshield washer fluid”. That is, a high-quality glass washer poured into the tank of your car should not just remain fluid, but just wash the glass, stained with all kinds of winter troubles.
Non-freezing
In order to achieve the purity of the windshield, and sometimes the headlights, reputable manufacturers of anti-freeze carefully work on the composition of the product. In addition to the alcohol base, it includes prepared, salt-free water, all kinds of additives, including corrosion inhibitors, dyes and a complex of surface-active substances (surfactants), which, in fact, wash the glass. At the same time, the anti-freeze must not destroy the paintwork, plastic parts, rubber seals, and contribute to the clouding of the headlights.
"Manufacturers" of body-worn products do not bother themselves much, limiting themselves only to a mixture of alcohol, water, dyes, and flavorings. Accordingly, one should not expect any acceptable washing properties from such liquids.
Now about the alcohol base. In this matter, in recent years everything has been completely unified, since in fact the only way to make a legal and reasonably priced washer fluid is to use isopropyl alcohol (СН3СН (ОН) СН3, propanol-2, isopropanol) as the basis. A few years ago, the picture was different. The use of methanol in glass-washing liquids (no more than 0.1%) was prohibited back in 2000, and three years ago ethanol was also banned under the “economic” ban - liquids with an ethanol content of more than 9% were subject to the “vodka” excise tax, and the use of it as a basis for glass washer fluids has become disadvantageous. As a result, isopropyl non-freezing fills filled the salons of most cars with a suffocating odor.
The ban on the production of methanol-based glass washer liquids is understandable: this alcohol is not only deadly to take inside (and in Russia, as you know, they like to drink whatever they get), but even being in its concentrated vapors is harmful for a long time - you can damage the mucous membranes up to visual impairment. Vapors of an aqueous solution of ethanol (an analogue of ordinary vodka itself) do not have a harmful effect, ethanol is in fact optimal for glass-washing liquids, but administrative barriers have minimized its use. Isopropanol also does not greatly affect well-being, but since it has a very pungent and nasty smell, manufacturers are forced to use aromatic fragrances, and they (especially low-quality ones) can lead to poor health, for example, cause headaches.
The average consumer can either accept the monopoly of isopropyl fluids on the market or look for an alternative. There are not many of them. One of them is used by a number of craftsmen: instead of the washer fluid in the windshield washer tank, the usual cheapest vodka is used all winter. The second alternative is the use of imported concentrates made on the basis of ethanol.
