- For starters, I want to ask you to sign your book “Citizen of the World” for the editors. I recall that the governor of the Samara region Vladimir Artyakov also has it. At one time, he took the arrival of Renault at AvtoVAZ with great enthusiasm. Could he have the impression that now, after some time, Carlos Ghosn is somewhat moving away from his energetic and assertive actions, is slow?..

- It is difficult to expect a recurrence of events in completely different circumstances, starting from the companies themselves and ending with the economic situation. This book is about the revival of Nissan and the creation of the Renault Nissan alliance, the key to which was my tenure as the executive director of Nissan, which was completely independent in its decisions. There was no one to indicate what I should do. Yes, I felt a lot of support, but I made decisions only myself. As in the situation with Nissan, Renault is a shareholder - in this case, AvtoVAZ, but its director, Mr. Aleshin, is responsible for the success of the company. We support him in every possible way, suggest necessary landmarks, name the starting points, but no one can replace him, just like no one could replace me when I headed the Nissan. If success happens, it will be his success, and if failure, his failure. Of course, in this case, the consequences will affect us, as a shareholder company. The most dangerous thing is to appoint a manager and intervene in his decisions. This is the main lesson that could be learned at one time from the creation of the Renault Nissan Alliance. And here, being a minority shareholder, we do not depart from such a principle. Do not forget: we have only 25% plus one share of AvtoVAZ. We are very transparent. When we don’t like something, we immediately draw attention to this: discussions begin on the board of directors, consultations with the executive director. And, of course, we respect the opinions of each other. The stakes in this game are as great for us as the expectations of the Russian government. We have a collective responsibility, and it is distributed as follows: its main burden is borne by the executive director, then by large shareholders and only then minority shareholders, that is, we. These are the conditions that were proposed at the very beginning, we accepted them and do not intend to back down from them.

As a shareholder of AvtoVAZ, you have to unwittingly participate in the adoption of such decisions on which the preservation of jobs in the Samara Region depends. Similar can be observed now also on the example of GAZ and Opel in Nizhny Novgorod. How effective are these - in many ways forced - political decisions from a business perspective?

“I do not view the situation from that angle.” When we were invited as partners of AvtoVAZ, we became a minority financial participant. Our task is to help with technology and management experience. We cope with these functions. But no one offered us to become an exclusive foreign partner for the entire Russian automotive industry. What is happening now does not surprise us at all. The car market in Russia is large and developing. I think it will not be crowded with the two largest national automakers with various foreign participation. All the dangers for AvtoVAZ along this path come not from outside partners, but from within. He has everything for development, but the company is not developing, although it occupies a dominant position in the market - 25% of all cars sold in the country! And if any technologies are additionally needed - there are Renault and Nissan, if landmarks are needed - we are also able to help, help is needed in management - we are ready to provide it. In a word, AvtoVAZ has everything that is necessary for moving forward, but the problem is inside.

- Are you interested in participation in the JM-AvtoVAZ joint venture?

- We did not have a goal to completely close AvtoVAZ, we are positive about any form of its effective partnership.

Concern "Magna" after the purchase of "Opel" becomes the owner of a large-scale automobile production. In this case, is it advisable to continue cooperation on components, one might say, with a new competitor?

- Competition does not exclude cooperation, especially when it is profitable. We are developing our cooperation with competitors in many areas, for example, transmission and engines.

Well, on which side should we expect the arrival of component suppliers to Russia?

- I believe that Russia already has a base for component manufacturers - to take at least AvtoVAZ. We are also interested in developing the most competitive suppliers and welcome the creation of joint ventures - a combination of the Russian production base and introduced technologies. In fact, it doesn't matter which side the suppliers come from. Maybe just two. Say, in the Renault Nissan alliance, everyone has their own, and they are completely different. For Nissan, they are mostly from Asian countries - Japan, Korea, and even China - while for Renault they are mainly European companies.

Now let's turn to the cars. Do not you think that the concept of "Logan" needs to be reviewed?

“Logan is not only a successful project for Renault, but also an example for other manufacturers who are trying to copy it. Over time, when the wave of success settles, a new “Logan” will appear, certainly better than the previous one. But I see no point in revising the concept itself. Rather, we can talk about the modernization of a very successful project.

In St. Petersburg, opening the Nissan plant, you announced the imminent appearance of an inexpensive model in the company's lineup. Already thinking about her name?

“They haven’t chosen a name yet, so I can’t even gossip about this.” More importantly, we have an idea of what this car should be, created in close cooperation with Renault. If we want to make it affordable, we need to reduce development and production costs. To do this, there is a proven way to maximize the unification of components and components with Renault cars. This allows you to find common suppliers, optimize relationships. And then we’ll start to come up with a name.

- If you are in Frankfurt at a car dealership, it does not matter what car you are on. Another thing at the Cannes Film Festival.

“This is not entirely true.” I talked about something else: there are companies leading in this field, and the rest play the role of catching up. Among the latter for some time we were. Now we have hybrid technologies in the alliance, but our main competence is electric cars. Here we are the leaders.

- One way or another, the key impulse of change comes from one person - despite the fact that he understands perfectly well: one cannot change anything. That is, the process is always initiated by a specific person, but only on condition that he realizes the need to search for collective actions to realize his intentions.
