At the beginning of the year, the Nokian Tires company announced: it created a new model of a winter studless tire for SUV cars. Now we can compare the new product with competitors. She only has to “fight” with “veterans”, and the year of handicap here can be a significant advantage. Therefore, Nokian stands out of competition, and its performance is a guideline for competitors. Negotiations with Nokian were not conducted for long, the company offered its landfills and even the carrier - Porsche Cayenne S 4.2. And all that was left for us was to collect the other participants of the “battle” of dimension 255 / 55R18.


We conducted tests in two series at two Finnish training grounds. In Ivalo in March there were "white" races on snow and ice. Lake ice, and not artificial, as usual, but instead of rearranging on packed snow, the exercise “climbing a mountain road” was included in the assessment of handling on snowy roads. Part of the snow tests was carried out with the PSM (electronic heading stabilization system) disabled - on ice, the electronics did not significantly affect the results. A month later, in April, at the test site near the town of Nokia were "black" tests. All asphalt tests were carried out here and such an interesting and new exercise for us as testing the tire's ability to resist slash planning (floating on wet snow porridge; do not confuse with aquaplaning - there the tire floats on water!).


When summing up the results, we recall that the share of measurements and expert estimates, as in all tests, starting from the middle of this year, is 75 and 25%, respectively.

Novelty "Nokian" was very strong in any conditions - from snow and ice to asphalt of any state.


And thereby raised the bar high for everyone else.

Long-standing competitors took the podium: Michelin with the Latitude X-Ice model scored 872.3 points (price / quality ratio - 9.86), Continental with the CrossContactViking tire - it has 867.6 points and second place. On the third, quite a bit behind “Conti”, “Pirelli-Scorpion” is located - far from new, but, as it turned out, very strong on the “black” tracks and generally very decent. The fourth place, slightly inferior to the Pirelli, was taken by the Blizak DM-Z3, which is also not a novelty. Its elements are snowy and icy roads. It is a pity that the tire almost lost the slash-planing test.


High-speed (permissible speed of 210 km / h, like the Pirelli) Kumho I'ZEN RV ranks fifth. As usual, “Kumkho” asks for a modest price, and therefore deserves the title of the best bargain (price / quality - 6.94). And closes the parade "Freestein Wintrac 4 Xtreme", even faster (maximum speed - 240 km / h) and therefore more "asphalt" tire. Although in terms of price / quality ratio, it is on par with Nokian and Michelin.

On ice, the corner entry speed is limited by the drift of the front axle, and it is very tight. The moments of transition to sliding and restoration of grip are difficult to determine, a sliding car does not respond to the steering wheel. On the arc of rotation skid is possible. In general, the behavior is unstable. The same problems in the snow. It runs smoothly along a snowy road, but reacts sluggishly to taxiing.

The ability to resist slash planning in a bend is average. In deep snow, the car rises as soon as the suspension elements touch the snow. He doesn’t want to turn, but drives back. On an asphalt straight tire, there is a clear reaction and the desire to leave the road at the slightest lateral slope. In motion they make a hissing-whistling sound, increasing with speed. Very tough, as if heavily pumped, shake the car on any irregularities.

Tires are periodically found on ice for catching on, forcing the car to scour. The moment of transition to sliding is not entirely clear. On the arc of rotation a prolonged skid is possible. In the snow, the car prowls even harder. The behavior in the limiting modes is unstable: the speed at the entrance to the turn is limited by drift, and on the arc by severe drift. You can only drive the car with advanced actions. It goes smoothly on the snowy line, but the steering angles needed to adjust the course are greater than we would like.

In deep snow, the car moves uncertainly. Turns better than going straight. Ability to keep the road in a turn on a snow porridge above average. On the asphalt, the tires carry the Porsche smoothly, clearly responding to taxiing.

They make a noise of varying tonality depending on the coverage. There are no comments on the smooth running.

When designing Scorpion Ice & Snow tires, Pirelli specialists took into account all-terrain vehicle features such as a high center of gravity and large mass.

The tires used AST technology (Adaptive Compound Technology). The ductility of the mixture varies with tire temperature. Thanks to the interaction of three polymers of various types of tires, they guarantee excellent performance in the temperature range from –40 to +7 o C.

The behavior on ice is somewhat worse than that of Blizzak: slip disruptions and recovery are less clear, the grip is slightly lower. In the snow, the Porsche lazily reacts to the steering wheel, forcing the driver to turn it at large angles. To get to the desired radius, you have to either wait for the demolition to stop, or turn the steering wheel more. The latter leads to a sharp skid, which only an experienced driver can handle. In deep snow they prefer to start without intense slipping. But the "move" is better in any mode until the slipping, turn well.

On a snow porridge they hold a turn better than others. On the asphalt go almost exactly summer. The rolling noise is clearly audible, the tires voice the change in coverage by changing the tonality. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV is a true winter tire for northern conditions. A completely new rubber compound was used in which natural rubber was supplemented with a combination of silica and rapeseed oil. Slash Planning

Slash is a wet snow porridge that is often found on Russian roads. To assess how certain tires behave on it, determine the speed at which the wheels begin to lose contact with the road. For all-wheel drive, this is done in a bend. Technique is involved in preparing the coating. Its task is to mix snow and water to a homogeneous mass and distribute it with an even layer of 35 mm thickness.

Arrivals begin at a speed of 40 km / h, which is increased in increments of 5 km / h, as with transverse aquaplaning. At 55 km / h the car on any tires no longer keeps in a bend. During the test, the speed and lateral acceleration are recorded.

From the side you can see how well the tires resist floating on the snow porridge. If only sparse splashes of wet snow fly out from under the wheels, this is a clear sign that the slash has remained under the wheels and the car is about to pop up on it. But the huge fountains mean that the grip has not yet been lost.
