On the eve of the summer season, Goodyear prepared a surprise for riders and sports enthusiasts. Meet: at the top of the lineup is now the high-speed Eagle F1 Asymmetric tire.

The symmetrical design of Goodyear's former flagship model, the F1 GS-D3, was a matter of pride for the tire engineers and designers. The spectacular dagger stroke accurately painted the victorious V - the sign of Victoria. And in fact, these tires took one after another the prizes of the prestigious European automotive publications in the category of high-speed tires.

But Goodyear’s transition to the "asymmetric camp" was predetermined. The fact is that such a tread pattern gives the tire a more balanced character. For example, the outer part of the tire can work better on a dry road, and the inner part will not allow aquaplaning on a wet track. In addition, these tires are usually less noisy.

In total, about a hundred engineers and scientists conjured a new product for two years in Goodyear laboratories. For my taste, the novelty looks good. It always happens when the engineering solution is optimal. In relation to this tire, it is an asphalt element at speeds up to 300 km / h! The tread pattern is open on the inside to maximize water drainage. A solid central rib allows you to stand firmly on a straight line. Wide one-piece tread blocks on the outside are designed to improve grip when cornering.

Perhaps the main know-how of Orel is called Active Cornergrip Technology. As you know, in the bend the outer shoulder area of the tire is more heavily loaded, and the lightened inner part of the tread holds onto the road worse. In the new tire due to the use of an aramid insert, the sidewall compression is reduced, as well as the angle of the tire. The pressure at the contact patch is more evenly distributed and, as a result, the grip improves. At the same time, active cornering technology reduces friction and significantly increases tire mileage. All the benefits of innovation are fully revealed on a wet road. Higher pressure in the open shoulder zone means that the central grooves are completely loaded, which divert water.

Eagle character

Goodyear representatives invited journalists to check out the novelty in the business at the company's training ground located near the town of Mireval in southern France. This is a whole test complex. There is a speed circle, there is a winding track going down to the sea with excellent asphalt surface. In the “wet” sectors, water is poured over the roadbed through thin drainage pipes. Yes, so even, a few millimeters of film is simply obliged to “dump” the car into aquaplaning. Journalists lit up on the Audi TT's front-wheel-drive Audi TT shod with Eagle F1 equipped with a dual-clutch DSG gearbox. These cars organically fit into Mirevale’s sports test surroundings.

First there were races on a dry track. For a couple of sighting circles, I was convinced of the collected behavior and accurate reactions of the car.

Now the fast and the furious! In direct sections, Audi managed to accelerate to 170-180 km / h. Well, the new tires keep the line straight. Pleased with quick and accurate reactions to steering and traction. And braking is beyond praise.

Somehow imperceptibly you get used to permissiveness. And when the organizers offered to ride on the same Audi in high-speed tires from a famous competitor, I went on an assault at the same pace. But in the very first “mother-in-law's tongue” he felt a treacherous demolition of the turn. The car jumped off the track under the chatter of ABS. After such a cold shower, I slowed down the rhythm somewhere at 15 km / h so that the Audi TT did not lose traction.

And now again in the first car - and on water procedures! The feeling was that he was driving along the even channel of a shallow river. At first he was careful, but the car effectively braked on the surface of the water and confidently went through turns. Osmelev added gas. Even at high speed, the wheels pushed through the rain film and held onto the asphalt tenaciously - thanks to the longitudinal channels and transverse grooves that dexterously pump moisture out of the contact patch. On the wet track, Goodyear again liked more competitor tires. But we must take into account that when the reserve of coupling properties is exhausted, more sharp disruptions in sliding will require an instant response and accurate steering operation. In general, even in heavy rain the Eagle F1 Asymmetric allows you to drive very fast - of course, to a trained driver.
