The recent debut of the new Hornet 600 slightly pushed into the background "hornet" with a larger engine. Of course, Honda is still producing and selling the Hornet 900, but it is betting on six hundred. In addition, another alternative bike has already entered the market - the stunning Honda CB1000R, which, in fact, is an evolution of the Hornet 900 idea: a city motorcycle with a high-torque, moderately boosted engine and bright appearance. So the test 900-cc “insect” is perhaps an endangered species. It’s all the more interesting to test it until the “motorcycle entomologists” * recorded the fact of its final disappearance.

Hornet was amazed even before the test began. We were told that the motorcycle stood in the cabin for a year - and wound up with a half turn!

Scratching his head in surprise, the mechanic said that in his memory this was the only bike that did not require recharging the battery and a little prevention after such a long "hibernation". The 919 cc engine hummed evenly, warming up and gradually reviving. Do not be confused by the presence of the enrichment lever on the left under the gas tank: in theory, it should not be, because the Hornet 900 is a motorcycle with a fuel injection system. But you need to manage the quality of the mixture when the engine warms up yourself.

The motor is the central element of the "nine hundred": "around" the engine and the bike is built. Hornet received this in-line 4-cylinder 16-valve liquid-cooled powertrain from the popular Honda CBR900RR sportbike, and the soul affinity is evident. The Hornet is a powerful motorcycle capable of lightning fast accelerations. The dynamics, of course, are not “Fire”, but Hornet has an undoubted advantage - “scrap bottoms”, which CBR did not have.

If you ever dreamed of driving a trolley bus, you can start with the Honda Hornet 900. This one drives in such a way that makes you wonder if it has a gasoline engine or an electric motor? I took the hornet through all the circles of the test hell: with a heavy photographer (and character) sitting behind me, in third gear and a speed of 30 km / h, the motorcycle had to climb a steep serpentine uphill, and then it was sad to sneak into traffic jam between the rows of cars - all in the same third gear. Try to throw such tricks on the "fire", and he will rigidly remind you that, they say, you are not driving a tractor, but a thoroughbred "sport" - give him revs higher than 2500 per minute. I do not like gastronomic metaphors, but the Honda Hornet 900 motor is really “tasty.” On a motorcycle with such an engine, it’s nice to move around the city where you need a maximum of three gears of its 6-speed gearbox, and you don’t need to pull the wonderful “Honda” box with your left foot, which you will have to do with a 600-cubic hornet. Want to "get off the trolley" and "transfer to the courier train" - please, without getting up from the saddle: throw the tachometer needle to the mark of 5000 rpm and above - and everything will work out.

From the CBR900RR, the Hornet 900’s “blood brother” also got a sensitive throttle handle that instantly responds to the pilot’s wrist movement. The gas is short-stroke and rather tight (usually on a large-volume roadster they install a handle with a slightly longer stroke and a little softer). However, these features do not cause inconvenience: it is easy to dose the amount of fuel supplied to the combustion chambers, and in traffic jams it is enough to open the handle a millimeter, as the motorcycle is already creeping confidently, buzzing angrily with two exhaust pipes.

Would you like to train your arm muscles with a hand expander? You have it: the Honda Hornet 900 clutch mechanism. Toward the end of the test day, my left arm was numb, out of control, blackened and almost fell off. Seriously, the clutch is really tight (the release device is mechanical, not hydraulic). But not everything is so bad: the clutch grabs at the very beginning of the lever stroke and smoothly releases.

Another ingredient in the “goodies” of the motor is the gearbox. I will not sing the praises of Honda, because not only does it make clear and soft gearboxes. Nevertheless, I am obliged to note that it’s as pleasant to switch gears on a Hornet as on an expensive car: easy, trouble-free. It’s only a pity that due to the fact that the engine has “electromotor” characteristics, it’s not necessary to click the gears.

Sochi serpentines require special management skills and concentration of attention from the driver: a little gaping - you can easily "get out". It is good if the turn with a chipper * Crumpled, scratched barriers clearly demonstrate the degree of danger of mountain roads. In such conditions, testing a powerful road builder is, to put it mildly, exciting. Before entering the serpentine, he promised himself several times to be careful, more precisely, he was in vain straining: Hornet was going on autopilot. Amazing motorcycle - easy to drive, forgiving many mistakes. In addition to one - with the brakes you need to be careful, especially with the rear. The front two-disc works with "four plus", but the rear, perhaps, is too tenacious: with this, it is easy to put the wheel into an uncontrolled skid. But it’s worth using it - this is not a sport bike for which one front wheel is enough: the weight distribution of the “hornet” mass allows you to brake effectively with two wheels.

Long turns, he goes quickly and easily, but the steep “peak” is clearly not his thing. Suspensions are good (the fork and the rear monoshock are adjustable and quite energy-consuming **), however, the rigidity of the chassis is not enough, and the back of the bike sometimes “walks”: several times there was a feeling that the rear wheel went into a skid What, in theory, should not be: rubber holds the road well, the speed is not prohibitive, the road is dry and smooth. I tried again - again the same. With a large slope in tight corners, the undercarriage begins to “float”. I will not quibble: the motorcycle is nevertheless well-controlled and a priori created not for infernal bends at high speed, but for city driving and gait on straight and level roads. The hornet copes with these tasks at five plus points.

Maneuvering the Hornet 900 at low speed is fun! He is obedient, like a children's toy, easily unfolds in a narrow street. A short saddle makes it comfortable for people of average height: with my 174 cm cap, I confidently put both feet on the ground. Two notes on ergonomics: the footrests are requested lower and the steering wheel higher, then the pilot’s landing will become even more convenient. Although the standard is also nothing.

Always meticulously related to dashboards (there is such a sinner behind me). Because it is more pleasant to observe beautiful instruments, and then, the pilot’s comfort level and its safety depend on their readability. In the case of the Hornet 900, the manufacturer remained faithful to the strict Japanese principle: the main thing is functionality. The “tidy” of the big “hornet” is not striking in its originality and grace - it is simple and understandable, it has everything you need: fuel level sensors, coolant temperature sensors, a HISS security system lamp. Classic glasses for a speedometer and tachometer are the canon of the Roadster genre. Here's what is remarkable: the speedometer is marked not to the usual 180 km / h, as in almost all Japanese high-volume vehicles, but to the encouraging 260 km / h. I didn’t check the “maximum speed” - there was no place, and it wasn’t out of season to accelerate to “supersonic”, but I felt that the specialists from Honda were not cunning.

In my opinion, the Hornet 900 is an almost hassle-free motorcycle: reliable (a familiar mechanic said that for all his long career in the Honda motorcycle service, the Hornet has never been brought with serious damage), convenient and even practical, and also beautiful, relatively inexpensive (CB900 An official dealer Hornet costs only 20, 000 rubles more than the new “six hundred”). One thing he lacks is charisma. The “Hornet” is too “right”, too understandable, there is no surprise in it (by the way, its main competitor, the “liter” Yamaha Fazer, suffers the same). But I don’t think that this is a slight repulsion to the buyer (and is it really a flaw?).

Many choose this well-balanced bike with good technical characteristics and a spotless reputation. Those who need a "interesting" motorcycle, let them pay attention to the "cruel" Honda CB600 Hornet: this one is "with character."
