The report of the US Department of Transportation of 1972 was for the sensational once model only posthumous rehabilitation. Not only seven years have passed since the start of the lawsuit, but also three years after Corveire was discontinued. Even his ideological descendants from the banks of the Neckar have already become history, but on the Dnieper they still had to be born two decades!

In the mid-1950s, more and more European cars began to be sold in the United States. Moreover, the rear-engined compact Volkswagen Beetle, which at first only made Americans laugh, became the leader. Of course, against the background of general sales, the sales of the “bugs” were small, but the Big Three companies decided that this was a mess. It is required to create models that could distract buyers from overseas babies. How to make a compact car in American style? Take a large one, reduce the length and width, install a six-cylinder engine (the “four” for the United States of those years is too much!). The design - frame, suspension, transmission - remained the same. Only Chevrolet engineers, inspired by Edward Cole, the company's general manager, took a different path. A compact supporting body with an engine, with air cooling located at the rear, independent suspension of all wheels! And also - wide low profile tires. For the USA of those years, such a machine is a revolution! True, the engine is only 81-horsepower, but instead of a three-speed manual transmission, you can order an automatic dear to the heart of Americans.

Chevrolet-Corvair (this name was given in 1954 to the concept - a coupe based on the sports Corvette, but the car did not go into the series, and the name did not disappear) debuted in 1960. In the same year, the car hit the cover of Time magazine, the reputable magazine Motor Trend called it the car of the year, and more than 250 thousand copies found buyers. For the United States - a little, but pretty well, considering that a car with a rather modest, almost Spartan finish by the standards of the United States was not very cheap, as it turned out to be difficult to manufacture. However, many, including the ladies, liked the laconic, European-elegant design of the Corveira. In 1961, the range of models was supplemented by a station wagon, as well as a minibus, a van and a pickup truck - analogues of the rear-engine Volkswagen T1. Soon, however, the creators of Corveira came up with an even brighter idea: to create two-door modifications for young, sports-oriented buyers. A coupe and a convertible with more powerful engines, including turbocharged ones, really did very well, although witty people called them “Porsche” for the poor”…

At the other end of the world, in the USSR, some still believed that soon we would really overtake and surpass the United States. In the meantime, at least dreamed of a “Zaporozhets”. True, the citizens of a great power, competing with America, did not like the European-style machine: it caused irony, and even malicious ridicule. Already in 1961, barely ZAZ-965, later nicknamed the "hunchback", became serial, a prototype model appeared, which was to change it. The three-volume body with the engine compartment protruding from the rear is an outwardly “right” car. With a stiffener and a molding, the body is visually divided horizontally (then the nickname “soap box” comes), a visor above the headlights, round lights at the back … Does it look like nothing?

Usually, when talking about ZAZ-966, they remember the West German subcompact NSU. But the “Prince 4” model from Neckarsulm, which is on the Neckar River (really similar to the Soviet one), appeared in 1961, changing the version of “Prince” with a different design; at this time, a prototype of the new "Zaporozhets" already existed. It is unlikely that Soviet engineers saw German counterparts. The creators of ZAZ-966, with whom the author had occasion to speak, did not remember the NSU vehicles, at least at ZAZ or in US. But “Corvair” was in the leading research institute of the industry! Bodybuilders and motorists were especially interested in cooling the engine, trying to understand why our Zaporozhets is getting hot! It is unlikely that the ZAZ-966 accidentally came out looking like a Chevrolet Corvair. Well, the fact that "NSU-Prince 4" was also done not without the influence of an "American" was repeatedly hinted by Western historians. It turns out that Soviet and German cars are the "nephews" of one American uncle, whose fate, alas, was unfortunate.

A year before the start of serial production of ZAZ-966 and a year after the thorough modernization of Corveira, a scandal broke out in America in 1965. Attorney Ralph Nider published the book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” where he actively criticized General Motors, blaming cars in general and concern in particular for all mortal sins. To the rear-engine Chevrolet, the publicist devoted only the first chapter. But it was it that was read by newspaper men and critics. The essence of the claims of Nader: the design of the rear suspension of the Corveira is such that the car can roll over almost at any turn! By the way, in 1964, along with the design, the suspension was also changed by installing a stabilizer. But even before this, there were no complaints from buyers. But after Nader’s book, Chevrolet received about 300 lawsuits. In only one case, the court found the car guilty, but the General Motors leadership had already made a mistake. No need to obey: “There were minor flaws on individual machines. After 1964, they are excluded, and we are ready to test the early cars.” Instead, the company entered a war of incriminating evidence. They began to find out: did Nayder have a driver’s license (it seemed that there wasn’t a sign of disloyalty for the USA!), What were his political views, was he a communist? Fortunately, they also showed common sense - they brought together handling experts and riders. Those, having plenty of fun on the Corveira, recognized them as quite normal, of course, taking into account the specifics of the rear-engine layout.

Alas, sales, although not dramatically, have declined. After the peak of 1962, when more than 328 thousand cars were sold, in 1964 237 thousand were found, and in 1966, at the height of the scandal, only 103 thousand were found. The Soviet press, of course, happily clung to Nader's book - proof of the low quality of overseas cars and yet another evidence of "incurable vices of capitalism"! And the controllability of our "Cossacks" cared only for specialists …

Serial ZAZ-966 resembled an American uncle only a little less than prototypes. It's funny that on the cars they put a fake chrome radiator trim, which was not on the American model. Apparently, they considered that the Zaporozhets looks more elegant with it - it looks like “normal” cars in which the motor is not in the trunk. Only in the early 1970s they abandoned the grill, and Zaporozhets began to resemble the scandalous Chevrolet even more. And on the compact German NSU, by the way, even four headlights appeared - just like an overseas car.
