Actually only three points are devoted to wheels in GOST. The standard does not allow cracks in the disks and rims, visible violations of the shape and size of the mounting holes, as well as loosening of the tightening or absence of at least one bolt or mounting nut. Here, the interests of the parties completely coincide - to ride with curves, there are no fools with somehow bolted wheels. However, it is worth decorating a car with a cast or forged work of art, as the idyll ends - they will immediately require a certificate from the happy owner, referring to the notorious “amending the design of the telephone exchange”. What are the origins of such rigor?

SPHERES OF INFLUENCE

Every wheel is good only for "their" car - a mismatch to either one or the other will not bring happiness. In order not to be mistaken, just look at the product labeling. For example: 5.5 Jx15 ET25 4x100x54. The first digit is the distance between the inner parts of the flanges in inches. It is she who sets the width of the mounted tire. It is not worth experimenting here, so as not to violate the working conditions of the latter.

15 is the landing, but not the radius, but the diameter of the wheel, also in inches. Theoretically, it can be varied, keeping the outer diameter of the wheel shod in the tire constant due to the selection of the profile height. For example, 185 / 70R13 in this sense is fully consistent with 185 / 65R14. However, it is still not worth reducing the diameter, since the brake mechanism is located inside the rim - suddenly the wheel will not fit! But there seems to be no increase in technically justified prohibitions, but they don’t think so at the PIK, referring to clause 4.5.4 of GOST R51709-2001. It states that the ATS should be equipped with tires in accordance with the operational documentation, and the fit diameters of the tire and rim, of course, coincide. And if the manual says R13 - please! One can be comforted by the fact that, ceteris paribus, tires with a relatively high profile are preferable for our pit-rich roads.

ET25 - departure, means the distance (mm) from the mating (adjacent to the hub) plane of the wheel to the plane passing through the middle of the rim. The smaller the outreach, the stronger the wheel protrudes outward, and vice versa. From the point of view of security, this is perhaps the most insidious parameter, because it affects the handling as if quietly. Here the shoulder is involved - the distance between the intersection of the axis of rotation with the road and the center of the tire contact spot. If the shoulder is positive (the intersection of the axis of rotation with the road is on the inside of the contact patch), then with increasing resistance to rolling the wheel (say, when it hits the curb), the car will try to move off the road, if negative, it wants to return to the canvas. For front-wheel-drive VAZs, for example, the shoulder is close to zero - installing “Zhiguli” wheels with a smaller overhang will lead to a positive moment, and with it to yaw along the road. Although, judging by the number of “frets” with rollers aggressively sticking out from niches, someone enjoys such a ride.

4x100 - the number of mounting holes and the diameter (mm) on which they are located. With the first figure, everything is clear without comment, with the second, as practice shows, not quite. The trouble is that sometimes the diameters almost coincide (for example, for VAZs - 98, for "Golf II" - 100), introducing the owner of a domestic car into temptation. After all, the proprietary "Volkswagen" body of rotation is much cooler than Turkish casting! However, “almost” will certainly come sideways - it will not work to attach a foreign wheel normally. For the same reason, a cheap domestic wheel does not fit the popular Nexia - it has a Golf radius of bolts.

And finally, 54 is the diameter of the central hole; it must match the size of the centering protrusion of the hub. Why - it is clear from the name. If the hole is too big, you can use adapter rings.

I do not think that any of the buyers are not satisfied with the characteristics of regular wheels. Discussions about rigidity and unsprung masses (unless you are, of course, a rider) are good only for complacency. Let's be honest: the main reason for buying alloy wheels is a craving for the beautiful. Satisfying it now is no wonder - supply is clearly ahead of demand. The state took special care of quality (after all, traffic safety), devoting these products to GOST R50511–93. There, 22 pages set out the requirements, including "aimed at ensuring safety for the life and health of the population and the safety of property …". To make sure that the wheel that is attracted to them corresponds to it, as easy as shelling pears - just look at the markings on the disk (rim) or ask the seller for papers.

Like any beauty, wheels made of light alloys are very vulnerable, but they cannot be repaired, unlike steel counterparts. The problem is that even with minor corrections (not to mention welding!) Microcracks can occur in the material, which can subsequently provoke instantaneous destruction. At the inspection, they probably will not notice this, but they don’t have to upset the suddenly limp car either …

So PIK PIKom, but don’t be too bad. After all, safety is not only in the hands of the traffic police, it is also in the head of the owner.
