The advantages of delivering cargo on the roof of a car are obvious - simple, convenient, inexpensive, but these tempting arguments sometimes turn into big troubles.

The load on the roof, as a rule, creates significant aerodynamic resistance to the movement of the car (with the exception of luggage racks, boxes) and increases the overall center of gravity. With such a burden of high speed and "sports style" driving is better to forget. In addition, that fuel consumption increases significantly, rolls in corners and pecks during braking increase.

Manageability naturally suffers. Car manufacturers usually limit the mass of cargo on the upper trunk to 50 kilograms. This is quite reasonable, but often they load on the roof how much it fits. There are absolutely monstrous racks made of reinforcing steel with a load of no less than 400 kg - a poor body, its age is short-lived! However, we will leave these records in the Guinness Book and see what are the features of the transportation of a quite moderate luggage.

For long trips, it is best to get a signature box on the roof. Its contents are well protected from dust, rain and, importantly, from curious and appreciative looks. The box itself is quite smooth and has little aerodynamic drag. In addition, you do not need to worry about carefully securing the cargo - nothing will fall out of the box with a lockable lid. At the same time, one should approach the loading of the box wisely - there is no place for gas cans in it, but sleeping bags, tents, a bag with clothes and other light but voluminous luggage deserves a trip on the roof. True, boxing is quite expensive and requires storage space, so they don’t buy it without special need.

It is much more practical to have two crossbars fixed to drains (if any) or to door openings along the edges of the roof. They are compact, easily fit in the trunk, and if necessary are installed in a few minutes. And since the crossbars are separate, they can be put at any distance from each other, under a specific load. It is only necessary to remember that the supporting platforms should be located at the very edge of the roof, at its rounding - this is the most rigid place. Otherwise, especially if the load is heavy, dents may remain on it.

Rigging is perhaps the most crucial stage in preparation for transportation. Sometimes loaded cars are found - it’s not an hour, they will lose belongings along the way. By the way, a trunk torn off by the wind with sheets of plywood, hardboard or a similar load is not so rare.

And even more, if you place it especially “successfully”. Do not tear off the trunk, so he will break. Therefore, if you have to carry sheet material, it is better to lay it so that, if possible, it does not hang over the windshield, and pack the sheets in one bag and especially carefully pull its front edge to the trunk. By the way, any ropes during movement weaken, no matter how tightly tighten them, so it’s better to use rubber bands to tie the goods in, or at least choose a slack for them. Plinths, corners, pipes, and the like, smooth and long "scattering" can be pulled with tape.

When transporting long lengths, the main enemy is resonance. The progressive swinging of even a small pack of boards will tear off any, though tightly bolted trunk, or even bend the roof. To reduce the likelihood of buildup is simple - you just need to pull the hanging ends of the boards to the body.

If the machine is equipped with a towing device, it is useful to make a simple device for transporting long meters - a folding support on the ball of the towing device. With it (tested in practice) the transportation of a package of six-meter boards on the roof of the usual “ten” is not particularly difficult.
