AvtoVAZ always “kept in mind” diesel modifications of its cars. At one time, such a machine was even in the Samara family - but something did not grow together, and it did not become a serial one.
So, the Peugeot Citroen Moteurs DV4TD Euro-IV turbodiesel is the first of the new “DV” family of FSM engines created by the Peugeot-Citroen and Ford community. The most interesting differences between the engines of this family are compactness, which makes it easy to “implant” them into cars of different brands; Compliance with toxic standards Euro III and Euro IV (with exhaust gas recirculation); profitability - they are 23% more economical than their counterpart DW8B.
Now specifically about the features of the DV4TD engine:
- the intake manifold is integrated into the decorative cover of the engine;
- The exhaust manifold is located in front;
- the catalyst is installed directly at the turbine outlet.
Included with the engine is a MA5 gearbox of the same manufacturer: five gears, cable management, transmitted torque of 150 N.m. LuK clutch also with cable drive.
Combined wheel drives - internal joints of the Tripod type, external - ball, manufactured by AvtoVAZ.
The exhaust system has remained almost unchanged, only the compensator (bellows) is shifted along the pipe closer to the engine. The cooling system is also not much different from the standard one - the native radiator, only pipes with a modified configuration and another expansion tank. The fuel supply system was changed in accordance with the specifics of the diesel engine.
Having a general idea of the design, we try to ride. And then it turned out that the Kalina diesel is full of pleasant surprises associated, of course, with the Peugeot engine. It turns out that there are no glow plugs in it, so you can turn on the starter without the shutter speed indispensable for passenger diesels due to the heating of the candles. Testers say the engine starts easily even at minus 25 degrees. If only the oil was not too thick, but the battery had enough strength - the compression ratio is 18 units.
The motor works surprisingly softly, there are almost no vibrations. Of the specific sensations, I note only chatter, and even that pleasant tonality unusual for a diesel engine.
Touch As a rule, in diesel engines it is required to transmit a large torque - because the clutch is quite tight, smoothly turning it on without habit is not easy. This is not here: the moment sufficient for starting is already provided at idle, and the clutch engages very smoothly.
After a few kilometers along the city streets, it seems as if you have been driving a diesel Kalina for a long time. During acceleration, you can sort out gears very quickly - just push the gas by five to ten millimeters, and it's time to turn on the next. Switching, by the way, is very easy and clear.
The general accelerator pedal stroke is quite large and in good faith is supported by the acceleration intensity. Acceleration itself is very smooth, without failures and pickups caused by turbocharging. Checked - no turbo!
