Can we cope with mastodons in the city until we get out on the track? Is it easy to maneuver at low speed with the combined weight of a motorcycle and a rider about half a ton?.. They had no right to make a mistake: motorcycles were not their own, borrowed, and their total cost was about 35 thousand dollars
Both have a 6-cylinder boxer engine with cardan transmission to the rear wheel, almost absolute wind protection and simply crazy equipment, designed to raise the bar for comfort of the driver and passenger to an unprecedented height. Here and reverse gear, and adjusting the height of the windshield, and a radio with four speakers, and a running line system on the RDS radio panel (for the new model), and the supply of warm air to the arms and legs, and the headlight corrector, countless glove compartments and wardrobe trunks… The body of any driver is most conveniently located in a leather chair: the shape and dimensions of its loin portion do not matter. Both motorcycles form a classic direct landing, the lower back rests on a small back. Very comfortable: all muscles are relaxed. If the driver nevertheless gets tired of the back and the fifth fulcrum, the seat of the new model can be adjusted “for oneself”. It’s like in the massage chairs of executive cars.
And if you get into the passenger seat (or passengers)? Not only is "sitting high - I look far away", you really sit like in a limousine: a throne with armrests (under which you can hide a lot of small things), on the "fresh" model there are also all conceivable and inconceivable adjustments. Even the volume of the rear speakers - and that can be adjusted! The chair is with a large back, so while moving, at least read a book. And then drink beer (well, who will forbid the passenger?) Ѕ Emotions after at least temporary possession of such luxury are exciting
While we licked our eyes with all the charms of our experimental, the motors warmed up. The engine of the new model is equipped with a proprietary PGM-FI injection system, so it starts instantly. In warm-up mode, it keeps increased revolutions - you do not have to stick up the enrichment lever, as in the old one. The motors of both motorcycles are barely audible, without mechanical noise. But the sound, and clearly audible, was: on the "wedding ship" (as we called the white "gold"), the previous owner installed … direct exhaust pipes! Have you ever seen Gold Wing with forward ducts? So, such a miracle in nature exists.
Both have a height-adjustable windshield. Two levers at the edges of the dashboard release the lock, and the glass can be raised higher or lower. And I would like an electric drive. Well, okay, we are not lazy, we won’t tear ourselves up.
Well, let's go! No, not right away - when they rolled out of the passenger compartment, they were forced to move backwards a couple of meters. For a one and a half-liter Gold Wing, the reverse gear is engaged with a lever located at the level of the left knee, for the new one - with a button on the right steering wheel (you have to specify its location, since here, except for the steering wheel controls, there are still a bunch of switches and buttons). On tidy, “R” - “Reverse” caught fire, you press the starter button - the motorcycle backs off. It is pleasant that the Japanese took this necessity into account: at the slightest bias, when the "nose" is directed downward, move the motorcycle back, sitting in the saddle, above human strength. Let horse work better.
And since they started talking about the mass … It is worth mentioning that motorcycles have not only side stands (it’s easy to use them), but also central ones! They looked at them and thought: is this what the designers joked so cute? Do you really think that you can drag a thug on a pedestal alone?.. (How can you not remember that the same heavy BMW K1200LT has a stand with electro-hydraulic drive.) But you tried it - the "gold" masses are even very easy install on the "central"! There is a lever on it, I pressed it with my foot - and the rear wheel is already on its weight.
The fear of not managing the control vanished right after the first click of the gearbox: both hippos after 10 km / h turned into well-trained circus animals. That you drive slowly, that fast - motorcycles are easily driven.
A small "mess" was found: both of us (and we changed devices) had the impression that the guides in the front fork were worn out, as a result of which the motorcycle in turn, if it got into the pit with its wheels, forced it to taxi. There is nothing to be done, age makes itself felt: for 11 years, a white “gold” probably wound more than the 33 thousand kilometers that its idle odometer showed (in a motor-car service, repairing the device will take 3-4 hours).
The dynamics of acceleration exceeded all expectations. One and a half liters of volume, crammed into six cylinders, literally shoot a "limousine" when the tachometer needle passes the mark of 3000 rpm. At an energetic start from a traffic light, cars that decided to drive with us quickly turned into spots in wide rear-view mirrors. Acceleration to 140 km / h is energetic, but then the sailing effect of the crew affects and the pace weakens. The box works "in a Honda" - gently, without "half-heartedness." When the highest gear is engaged, the OD - OverDrive symbol on the dashboard lights up (this is the highest gear). Nevertheless, the “kopeck piece” the motorcycle is gaining without much tension. At this speed, the insufficient rigidity of the chassis affects twisting - the body begins to “stir up”. The pendants “chew” small irregularities - they won’t choke, but they break through the front fork on large ones. So, it is necessary to change not only the guides, but also pour more viscous oil into the shock absorbers. The rear suspension is with adjustable stiffness, so you can adjust it to almost any weight of the driver, passenger and cargo in trunks. An option from a pneumatic compressor works. This function has one very convenient side effect: a hose with a spool sticks out in the right case, picking up a second special hose (it comes with the motorcycle), and you can pump the wheels with the same compressor.
I had to push the sport-biker habit into the bins of the brain - to brake only the front and remember that sometimes the rear brake is also relevant on motorcycles. But, I must say, by today's standards, the front here is also frankly weak, especially when compared with the 1800 brake.
In general, the motorcycle is very, very lively and, after a little maintenance, will give the owner many thousands of interesting kilometers.
