A DOGS - BETTER?

They advanced in a solid column: two Taigas (one of the latest models - Patrol), who had seen the Buran, Ikar, two Lynxes (one of the very first cars, the other, on the contrary, the most fresh”) and the self-made“Zimogor”with a 4-stroke Briggs & Stratton engine (they wrote about it in Moto, No. 1–2006).

The last meters of virgin snow have passed - and the ice rustled under the tracks. We are in the vastness of the Rybinsk reservoir - the locals call it the sea. And not for nothing - the width of the reservoir reaches 70 km, and the length is more than 120. An ideal testing ground for testing snowmobiles!

A gust of wind brought the many-voiced barking of the dogs: our trekking companions were on the way. We went to meet them, but here the first breakdown occurred - at the Taiga the box “quacked”. On a snowmobile odometer 2500 km - a critical mileage for this model: if the node has lived up to it, then the Taiga will ride happily ever after. But many do not survive. In the first models, a rare box generally experienced such a run. Subsequently, imported SKF bearings were installed - and things got better. It seems that our car is still with old components * While the "corpse" was towed to the shore, I thought: maybe ask the company for dog breeders - is it more reliable with them?

Hedgehogs in the Mist

We are reunited - thirty dog ​​heads for five teams and a few more young individuals who are only "brought up to date". Amazing is the breed of sled dogs with piercing blue eyes - Husky. They are able to stay in only two states - to sleep and to run. I discovered the third - to bark: this is when they no longer sleep and still do not run.

In addition to natural dogs, the company also found a “motor dog” - a single-track tug with a motor from a walk-behind tractor. It was built by engineers from Tutaev Valentin Chmutov and his son Dmitry.

On the first day we were going to cross the wide Volga riverbed and get to the other shore somewhere in the vicinity of the village of Dubets. But will it succeed? A snowstorm rose, visibility - meters hundred • Plotting course on a satellite navigator. Soon it got dark, and, in order not to be confused, they stumbled into a heap. And here is the first serious test - it is necessary to cross the island of Sacred Moss. On its perimeter there is a trust, in the center there are dense bushes. The trust itself is not an obstacle, but creates them around itself, since it serves as a snow retainer. But to us what! Imagine: getting down from a snowmobile - and then you fall down to the waist. Riding at the vanguard of the "rightfully strong" Taiga Patrol, it immediately buried its saddle in the snow. Those who tried to go round the Lynx suffered the same fate. And only the “Buran” struck the snow screen, however, all the time strove to stand on its hind legs.

This is where the Taiga flaw came out: the transmissions to the KP are switched on not ideally. You especially feel it when the car is stuck, and in order to swing it back and forth, the speeds would need to be switched quickly. A box does not like it.

They sweated a lot, but when they pulled the cars out of the snow captivity, they changed the tactics of advancement. Now the Buran was the first to go, followed by the Patrol (it has the widest track), all the others behind. Surprisingly, the Zimogor rode easily: despite the “dead” engine (16 “horses” in total) and narrow tracks, it crawled where the more powerful ones “sat down”. All due to four-stroke traction on the “bottom” - it did not allow the track to slip.

We wandered for a long time, but could not find a passage through the thicket. The most annoying thing is that the village is somewhere nearby, judging by GPS, only a kilometer away. Lathering with the pulling out of cars, everyone vyingly offered to go on reconnaissance on … "Buran". However, its owner was in no hurry to pass the steering wheel into the wrong hands. I also asked, but I did not refuse.

Moved to the "Buran". I haven’t ridden it for a long time: the last test of this centenarian (this year marks the 35th anniversary of the model) “Moto” conducted here eight years ago. Soon, the Taiga went into production at the Rybinsk plant, and it became uninteresting to test outdated models. Nostalgia from the memories soon gave way to sensations quite earthly: very shaking! But the speed on the short-Buran is far from the limit, only 30-40 km / h. You can, of course, stand up and ride "on your feet, " but, firstly, the wind is blowing so hard in your chest, and secondly, you can’t stand it for a long time - your legs get tired quickly.

ѕ The searches yielded nothing, and we decided that the morning of the evening is wiser. We camped right where we stopped. They got in touch with the “dog” group on their mobile phones: those who got lost in our tracks, also camped somewhere nearby. Dogs did not bark - apparently, they slept from the stock.

TAKE UNCHANGEALLY HEATED …

In the morning, the dogs went into another state of their own, they whined and woke them up. We handed bags to the dog breeders of animal feed - further along the path, or rather, the schedules of the participants of the “Winter Crossing” diverged. Still, the snowmobiles have a faster pace of movement: we expected to overcome 150-200 km per day on ski-tracked vehicles … Oh, plans, plans … My friend says: “Do not make schedules if you use Russian equipment ".

The situation is already different: a blizzard with a thaw was replaced by frost with the wind. In such weather, to sit at home in the warmth of the TV, at worst, to go in a car with a working stove. The very last thing is to cut open spaces on a snowmobile blown by all the winds, especially if it blows across you. But it was precisely such a hypotenuse that the navigator offered us - directed towards the Breytovo district center. There was to refuel, then to head for the other side of the reservoir.

The wind - by the wind, but the snow on the lake is not deep - and you can accelerate. I asked for the wheel of "Icarus." This car is not as well known as the Burana and Taiga, although they were made, in general, a lot - several tens of thousands, and they are sold and bought on the secondary market of Ikara. So I thought: well, the second test of the device may be useful and curious for other readers of the magazine.

“Icarus” was the first Rybinsk snowmobile with a two-ski layout; it appeared long before the “Taiga”. But the model was not ruined by the newly-emerged competitor, but by simplicity and too low a price: it turned out to be disadvantageous for the plant to make such devices. I dare say: with their disappearance from sales, a huge part of the buyers lost a lot. A year ago, I myself became the owner of such a machine, and was not disappointed. Not only due to the fact that it consumes very little fuel. The big "plus" "Icarus" is this. It is much more convenient to operate it on bumps than the Buran, and it is comparable to the Lynx and Taiga thanks to the rather long-stroke caterpillar suspension. One thing is bad: there is no "hydraulics" either in the ski suspensions or the caterpillar …

Let's go race. Forward, to a point, “Taiga” and “Lynxes” swept away (the maximum speed of the “Patrol”, measured by an impartial GPS, is 105 km / h. Not bad!), Followed by Ikar. “Zimogor” lagged behind, and yesterday’s hero, the all-round “Buran” trailed in the tail. It could accelerate even faster than 50 km / h - the power of a 34-horsepower engine and allows, but - uncomfortable. For the uninitiated, I’ll describe the construction of the caterpillar roller suspension in one word: none. Here is the "Buran" and shakes the guts, compresses the vertebrae.
