Sometimes it happens: the body is cut in half, and the motor is intact. But sometimes on the contrary - a mild accident leads to grave consequences for the engine, although the blow did not seem to affect it. To the trouble of the owner of the Audi A6, events developed like an avalanche, the beginning of which can be given in one careless step.

A luxury sedan was dragged "on a tie." It looked very fresh, if not for the scars from a small accident: the hood, the front frame, and the radiator grille were slightly bent. Plastic cladding, of course, "in the trash." However, the engine did not hit, only the viscous coupling impeller in the fan drive and the top cover of the casing covering the timing belt were affected. Important detail: this lid, also plastic, has cracked.

And the engine … jammed! In a rush, the owner was still trying to let him go, but soon abandoned this venture. That is the background. The “exhibit” that came to us was studied meticulously. The motor is V-shaped, six-cylinder, three in each row … The camshafts are driven by a common belt … There are no signs of a blow to the block or heads, the belt is in its place - everything is like in a pharmacy … but only at first glance. And on the second? After checking the valve timing, a monstrous inconsistency was found: the phases on the left camshaft of the intake valves are okay, and the hell went to the right! The motor does not allow such treatment - that’s what stuck it. Someone immediately posed the question with an edge: if the belt is perfectly tensioned, the pulleys are in order, then how did the right camshaft manage to “lag behind” the left?

Meticulously inspecting the right pulley, traces of plastic were noticed in the hollows between the teeth, and the picture began to clear up. When the plastic casing shattered into pieces where they were scattered, the ballistics specialist would not say, but some kind of splinter (albeit for a moment!) Got stuck between the pulley and the belt, playing the role of "ski". The phases are "gone."

We disassemble the motor: the consequences are the most devastating, we show something in the pictures. Curved or broken valves (photo 1), the pieces of which are “driven” by pistons into the mutilated head of the three right cylinders (photo 2). Saddles, bushings - the end! Pistons were deformed, and small fragments of steel got stuck between them and the cylinder mirror, kicking the work surface. Moreover, coolant has clearly penetrated into the second cylinder. Where from? From a through crack in the wall - longitudinal, about 100 mm long. Fortunately, the crack did not reach the top and bottom of the block - this allowed to repair the block with a little blood - to squander and screw it up.

Frankly, although the equipment in our workshop is not bad, its capabilities are not unlimited. We assign boring, honing blocks, grinding crankshafts, etc. to specialized enterprises (read - to factories!). So did the Audi unit. He was bored for installing liners cooled in liquid nitrogen. Later, having warmed up in the block, the sleeves sit with the necessary interference, in particular, practically exclude the flow of coolant. In this state, they are bored and honed to the desired piston diameter (in our case, the “family” had to be thrown out).

We also rejected the “broken” connecting rods. Of course, during assembly they were carefully weighed along with the pistons - they were convinced that the engine balance would not be disturbed. It was pointless to restore the head of the block, it was replaced, since it’s very easy to buy the “disassembled” one now, even assembled with valves.

Are you looking forward to a happy ending? Sooner - trouble does not go alone. The consequences of a small accident were not limited to this.
