A newcomer from Ingolstadt, as an Olympic all-rounder, has to pass several tests. This, by the way, is the task of any station wagon - it doesn’t matter if it has four or five rings.

Q7 acts in another subgroup - diesel. Here the pace of the new station wagon sets a 3-liter turbocharged engine. Without even looking at the technical specifications, it is clear that diesel is inferior in speed to a modern gasoline unit. But all-rounders compete not only on smooth roads, but acceleration to hundreds in 9 s and a maximum speed of 200 km / h say that the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI is in good shape.

A pointer to the autobahn with the inscription "exit" - like a starting gun. All gasoline power comes to life under the hood - Q7 with such an engine will give odds to many even on the highway. The box jumps up the stairs clearly and smoothly, and at the finish line it reacts to full throttle and without hesitation switches to lower speed, leaving opponents behind. In manual mode, the switching moment is more noticeable - apparently, the electronics need time to adjust to the driver.

Exceptionally quiet gasoline "eight" can not be called. Probably, Ralph Kunkel, head of the acoustics department, warned about this: “Acoustics must meet the expectations of the buyer.” That is, if you press the gas, the engine must speak in solid bass - a timid whisper will immediately disappoint.

It is hard for a diesel engine to compete with a powerful gasoline engine: sprinting jerks are not so frisky. But in terms of noise and vibration, the unit is equivalent to the V8 FSI: go and determine in motion which engine is under the hood.

On the road, the Audi Q7 behaves like a car - it responds quickly to the steering wheel, almost does not roll in corners, and does not try to deviate from the set course. The sacrifice of handling brought smoothness. Even setting the “comfort” mode for the air suspension (option), you still feel the fifth point of road joints and bumps. But they worked painstakingly on aerodynamics - it was not for nothing that the prototypes and pre-production samples were blown in the pipe for more than 1000 hours. The noise of the wind does not interfere, but rather warns that the speedometer needle is approaching 200 km / h. In addition, they tried to direct the flow around the front pillars so that in the rain the side windows and mirrors remained clean.

Asphalt under the wheels gave way to snow porridge, which has already melted in some places. Let's see how confidently the multi-wrestler will conquer this stage. The bend went smoothly - the stabilization system, relying on the driver, did not respond to a slight attack of the stern. Thank you for your trust, especially since it was quite easy to return the Q7 to the trajectory. Another turn, skidding - here the electronics could not stand it: having rattled with brake mechanisms, it helped to quickly put the all-terrain vehicle on the true path.

I'll try to do without helpers - turn off ESP. But I was not allowed to win this fight purely … all the same stabilization system, which considered the situation dangerous and decided to intervene. Perhaps she will repeatedly irritate the future owners of Q7 with her correct behavior. Humble yourself and someday you will thank her.

No one noticed the lap time, but it seems that on a 3-liter diesel engine I drove this track faster. Thanks to the “plague” torque (compared to a gasoline engine, its maximum falls at much lower speeds) such a multi-wrestler on a slippery and broken road travels more confidently, skids less and almost does not require electronic intervention. True, as soon as it turned into loose snow, the diesel engine began to spin the wheels - the car was crawling not so boldly. They didn’t begin to test passability in the field: I don’t remember how to say in German “Tractor driver, pull us out of here, bitte”.

But the slippery descent of the Q7 is pretty tough. You release the pedals and slowly roll off the hill, watching the electronics command the engine and brake one or the other wheel, preventing the car from slipping into the same field without a tractor. In addition, on the air suspension, the new universal “Audi” rises to the ground up to 240 mm. With such ground clearance you can safely crawl obstacles, but … neatly. Still, at a sharp bend there is a chance to strike the bottom (with such a long base) or a solid rear overhang.

Still, it’s good when the car does not decide for you what to do, but only warns. These assistants include a “lane change assistant.” LEDs are built into the exterior mirrors and start to flash when a car is approaching in the next row. So that the Q7 does not turn into a mobile illumination, signals are given only when the driver turns on the turn signal, and the threat is not further than 50 meters behind. The system is useful and works well - work at the body shops should be reduced.

It’s not easy to load luggage on the high floor of the Audi Q7 trunk … for owners of cars with conventional suspension. The rest should press a button, and the car will obediently sit down. By the way, in a richer configuration Q7, I found another key in the trunk with a strange icon and, of course, pressed. Somewhere, something buzzed, and a tow hitch crawled right out of my belly from under the car.

The starting price for cars with gasoline engines is $ 108 thousand, diesel versions start at $ 77 thousand. It so happened that Audi turned out to be the last of the automobile grandees who mastered the niche of models for outdoor activities that had become popular. However, those who started last always get a head start - they know how others go the distance.
