Hyundai Getz The front-wheel drive Getz was first shown in 2002, and was restyled in 2005 (ZR, 2005, No. 12). Body: 3- or 5-door hatchback. Engines: 1.1–1.6 liters (66–106 hp). Transmissions: 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Options: GL, GLS. Price: $ 10, 190–15, 890. |
Compacts are increasingly in demand in Russia as well. The bestseller in this segment is the Hyundai Getz, which sold over 15 thousand copies last year. He has many competitors, one of the most striking is Suzuki Swift, which we sell only with a 1.3 liter engine. In a fairly rich initial GLA configuration, the car costs $ 15, 550. And the updated Hyundai Goetz now has a 1.4 liter unit and in a close configuration the GLS will cost $ 13, 390.

What does the buyer get for this money? General equipment items: immobilizer, central locking, power steering, steering column adjustable only in height, ABS, EBD (axle brake force distribution system), driver airbag, air conditioning, audio training (the radio is installed in the Hyundai dealer), adjustment driver's seat height, heated front seats, power mirrors, front power windows. Now the differences.
Suzuki Swift is equipped with an emphasis on safety: Brake Assist, passenger airbags and side, as well as even inflatable curtains. In addition, the dealer gives alloy wheels, a radio tape recorder and engine compartment protection (not on a test machine). Hyundai Goetz is simpler: fog lights (by the way, for some reason there is no corrector for the main ones), an on-board computer, leather on the steering wheel and gear knob, a driver's seat with an armrest and tilt adjustment, rear power windows, disc brakes at the rear wheels.
So, with a difference in price of more than $ 2, 000, the levels of equipment for test cars are very close. If you take the Getz for $ 15, 650 comparable to Swift, you will get a second airbag, a powerful 1.6 liter engine, and even an automatic transmission.
RELATED SIMILARITY
By creating these cars, manufacturers seem to have tackled slightly different tasks. Koreans argued that they were no worse than eminent Europeans. And partly imitating them, they built a pretty Goetz, which after restyling acquired the missing individuality and completeness of appearance. The Japanese, on the contrary, tried to declare their originality, originality - these qualities are abundant in Swift's appearance. But, in my opinion, a chubby lobed little car, and even hopelessly black in color, with a high glazing line and small windows, looks like an armored car. However, someone will probably like this appearance.
The restrained low-key interior of the Suzuki captivates with its impeccable style, there are few bright elements, but everything is convenient and in its place. Hyundai cabin with a massive center console, which slightly disturbs the passenger, is more traditional, but richer decorated with leather, chrome and aluminum. Combines both machines accuracy manufacturing and space. And although the adjustments are clearly designed for people of moderate dimensions - at 180 cm I completely lowered the equally comfortable seats in both cars and pushed them back three quarters of the stroke - in the Suzuki there were still a dozen centimeters over my head, and in the Hyundai only a couple centimeters less. In “Goetz” there is no adjustment of the belt height, which is very desirable for tall drivers. The width is quite enough so that even fat people do not push their elbows.

The back is unexpectedly spacious for such small cars - sitting “on my own”, I can’t get my knees up to the backs! At Goetz, it’s even a bit freer both in length and in width, and parts of the back can be adjusted according to the angle of inclination. But in the "Swift" more comfortable and softer seats, and the ceiling is higher. The Isofix fastening systems for two child seats, three-point seat belts and three head restraints that are almost completely flush with the backrest are common advantages. The limiting limit of a quarter ton of the total mass is valid when landing three passengers in the back seat, and in a more or less long trip it is reasonable to tighten the limit to two centners.
The cargo capacities of the two cars are also very close - the trunk volume we measured is about 200 liters. The Swift’s compartment is a dozen centimeters deeper: unlike its rival, it has only a “dokatka” under the floor. But the slightly larger Goetz has a longer trunk, especially with the rear seat unfolded. For both cars, it is split in the proportion of 40:60 and allows you to fold only the back or fold forward and the pillow.
MANIFESTATIONS
“Listen, it’s stalling!” - a colleague who got out of Swift shrugs in dismay. I already know this - at first, several times, I also nearly drowned out a quiet motor when starting, with a modest moment “below” and a long-stroke accelerator pedal. Then he got used to pushing harder. On the 95th gasoline, a small engine develops a considerable 92 hp. power and moderate 116 N.m of torque. I don’t know whether the transition to AI-92 gasoline approved for use in Russia will greatly reduce these indicators, but you have to turn the motor sparingly for dynamic driving. As soon as in higher gears the tachometer needle falls below 3000, more or less intense acceleration can not be expected. Any overtaking is a transition from V gear to III, ascent to IV. However, a quiet motor and a clear box make this work even enjoyable.
Aerodynamic noise in the area of the front struts occurs only at high speeds. By the will of the designers, the windshield is not very tilted, which is why the long roof overhanging the cap makes it somewhat difficult to observe traffic lights.
With a short base and a wide gauge, as well as a dense Swift suspension, it partly resembles a card with its characteristic nervous behavior: it reacts sharply to steering, bumps, abruptly casts stern when skidding on slippery surfaces. In principle, there is nothing to worry about, but the steering wheel is as if from a car with a strictly opposite character - unexpectedly viscous, with an effort independent of the angle of rotation. Control exercise: when calmly moving along the minimum radius, I release the steering wheel. He should quickly, within one to two seconds, return to his middle position. “Swift” slowly unwinds the spiral, not rushing to straighten the trajectory - the reactive action on the steering wheel is quite small. Probably, the point is to configure the amplifier, by the way, electric. However, over time you get used to it.
Goetz has a completely different character: this is a real zinger, rushing to fulfill any command with excitement. It is almost a hundred kilograms heavier, but powerful and, more importantly, a more high-torque motor, developing up to 125 N.m, gives a very good dynamics. Unfortunately, it cannot be measured on snowy roads, and manufacturers' data is sometimes too optimistic. We rely on subjective sensations. The exercises of elasticity are the most indicative - for overtaking on the Hyundai it is not always necessary to switch down, the motor pulls well in higher gears, and even managed to accelerate to the fifth in a rise of 4%! The controls are light and absolutely intelligible, the reactions are quick, but not sharp, the suspension is quite comfortable, although the noise level is slightly higher than that of the opponent. Perhaps, only a short lever of a clearly working box could be slightly pushed forward - when the second and fourth gears are engaged, the elbow reaches the back roller. Moreover, the fog lamp buttons hid behind the steering wheel spokes. But here it’s more convenient, right in front of the driver, is the ignition switch.
But in terms of ground clearance, the Getz lost: under the overly powerful protection of the engine compartment - barely 100 mm even in an empty car! The driver will reduce this parameter by another ten millimeters - and in any rut will be crossed under the bottom. Having removed protection, you can get a bonus of 30 mm. At "Swift", even up to the protruding fastener of the subframe, 140 mm are quite acceptable. However, the engine compartment is not closed from below.
WE CHOOSE…
I’m afraid to incriminate myself for being illogical, but I would choose Suzuki Swift - first of all, for its original appearance. And also because of the powerful security features, the usefulness of which I know firsthand. But all this is good if you have 15-16 thousand dollars. And if you have 10 to 13 in your pocket, then the Hyundai Getz’s real competitors have turned out to be one-two. Confirmation - sales statistics.
