This is your first braking on ice. Skidded? Slippery? What to do? Quickly turn the steering wheel in the direction of skidding! Yes, not so, already late. I myself have been driving for many years, I have participated in ice racing, but I prefer to sneak along the first snow, carefully. I brake and look what came of it, I try the tire grip. And I advise you to do the same, especially if this is your first winter season at the wheel. So - what to do when it brings, but it will bring you!


Your first provocation of slipping is braking. Needless to say, one must try the road at a low speed and so as not to interfere with those traveling from behind. Do you hear a hiss of tires, but there is no deceleration? It means ice under the wheels. Congratulations! This is your first glide.

To prevent the car from getting out of control on such a slippery surface, it must be carried out very carefully, reducing speed as much as possible, as recommended by the rules of the road and driving manuals. Is it really just the antidote in the driver’s arsenal? There are simply no exact recommendations on what coverage what speed will be safe and for which vehicle! Sooner or later, "suddenly drift" and then what? In order to prevent dangerous waltzing on ice, you need to be able to interrupt it "on the first bars." And for this - first learn how to simulate tire slip, that is, artificially cause skidding or demolition. Yes Yes! If you confidently provoke them, you can just as confidently end it. And this skill is not given to drivers from above, it is developed by training - of course, in a closed area. The whole difficulty is that cars glide in different ways.


Let's define the terminology: drift is the sliding of the front axle, and drift is the rear. To pacify them, you need to follow a clear algorithm, in accordance with the type of drive of the vehicle. But in any case, if you want to stop skidding or reduce its angle - quickly, but not abruptly, turn the steering wheel in the direction of skidding and immediately return it to the “straight” position. If one driving is not enough, then immediately repeat it, but with a smaller angle. The main thing is not to wait for the response of the car, otherwise miss time and it will go into a rhythmic drift. This is the most common mistake - when the driver, having felt the rear axle slip, slowly turns the steering wheel in the direction of skidding and waits.

Another example: the driver turned the steering wheel sharply at a large angle, say, to the left, and then the right front wheel received an additional load. And when the load on the tire increases, its grip first increases, and then suddenly drops to zero, especially on snow or ice. Here the car slipped off the road, not obeying the twisted front wheels. This is already a typical demolition. It is clear why this happens? The driver could not find a common language with the car and demanded that he could not perform on slippery surfaces.

We conclude: to go on a winter road covered with ice, it is better after a cycle of training in an indoor area. And to the common question, which car is safer in icy conditions - with front or rear wheel drive, the answer is extremely simple. On a winter road, the car with any type of drive will be the safest - provided that it is controlled by a driver who knows how to provoke skidding and axle drift. But maybe, after all, a driver who knows how to stop slipping? Fair! But nevertheless, if you learn to intentionally translate the car into sliding, then you will suddenly feel what has arisen a moment earlier. And this is very important, because it will give you the opportunity to act proactively, that is, to react in advance.


Take an ordinary chair and try to balance it by placing one of its legs on the palm of your hand. If you wait until the chair heels strongly, and with a sharp movement in the same direction try to restore balance - an outstretched arm may not be enough. Now, a few quick steps in the direction where the chair heels! Did not make it? Now let's try it differently. Use your palm to make frequent movements with a small amplitude. The chair does not think to tumble to the side. Right! You parry his desire to fall in advance, anticipate the development of the situation - in a word, keep it under control. That is, with advancing the driver should act in extreme situations on slippery surfaces.



We provoke a drift with a hand brake. It is important here to feel the rear axle slip and react - correctly and quickly. Start moving around a circle with a radius of 20–25 meters and, gradually increasing speed, bring the car to the verge of sliding. Now lock and position the gas pedal. Press and hold the handbrake button, pull up its lever and immediately lower it (on a rear-wheel drive car this is done with the clutch depressed). It is wise to entrust the work with a handbrake to an assistant - then you do not have to rotate the steering wheel with one hand. As soon as the handbrake locks the rear wheels, a skid will begin, which you will immediately feel by sliding the rear axle. Immediately confident and clear movement of the steering wheel in the direction of skidding, "catch" the car (while the front-wheel drive does not need to discharge gas). Without waiting for a response to your actions, turn the steering wheel back - the machine will begin to straighten. Return to your imaginary circle and repeat again. Remember: the faster (but not sharper!) You turn the steering wheel in the direction of skidding and vice versa, the faster the car will react and begin to exit the skid. I emphasize once again - the steering wheel must be immediately returned to its original position. Being late for just a split second, you will swing the car. It will end with a U-turn. On the site - it’s not scary, but waltzing on the road is an extremely dangerous activity.

The next task is to provoke the demolition of the front axle and compensate for it.




Move along the same circle, locking the steering wheel, gradually increase speed (position 1). As soon as the demolition of the front axle begins, the machine slides outward, straightening the trajectory of rotation (position 2). Without changing the position of the steering wheel, turn off the gas (position 3 - do not drop the pedal completely, just release it). Sliding will stop and the vehicle will continue to travel in a given direction (position 4). Repeat all over again. The movement around the circle will turn out zigzag - this is the specificity of the front-wheel drive.

If you go to a circle with a larger radius, the drift will begin at a higher speed. Here the situation may change - under the gas discharge, the rear axle will begin to develop. Do not worry, this is another way to overcome the front demolition - transfer it to the rear skid and compensate, as in exercise 1, not forgetting to add gas again (not to the floor, but only so that the car does not slow down the engine). If the site is small and the desired speed cannot be achieved, you can train the transfer from drift to skid by throwing the tail with a hand brake.
