The editorial Hyundai Accent proved to be a very reliable car. Its pendants are, in general, no less durable than those of more eminent brothers. But their ability to cope with Russian roads can be estimated from the strength of the “C grade”: the ground clearance is small, and most importantly, the car is prone to swinging on the waves. Due to these characteristics, the bottom of the car often touches the road, and the behavior in high-speed turns becomes very uncertain. You can, of course, say that the Accent is very comfortable on smooth roads, and even pleasant in a quiet mode. But let's proceed from the real conditions: even roads in the capital to look for …
What to do? Spacers to increase ground clearance solve only the issue of "last kilometer" to the cottage. But the handling, already not perfect, is guaranteed to change not for the better. More effective shock absorbers? Of course, they will improve habits, but they will not fundamentally solve the issue. We need stiffer (and preferably longer) springs. Searching catalogs did not bring success - for relatively new cars (our 2003 Accent), they do not offer "alternative" springs. Therefore, when they finally found what they wanted from the Suplex company, they ordered two sets: one fully repeats standard springs, and the other reinforced. Why not relatives? They "sit down" very quickly, reducing the already low energy intensity and ground clearance. For reference: Suplex catalog numbers of front springs 12034 (standard) and 12041 (reinforced), rear, respectively, 12033 and 12043.
External differences are minimal: the number of turns is the same, and the diameter of the bar differs only in the rear springs (12.8 against 12.5 mm). In addition, we acquired a set of standard shock absorbers (hydraulic) and more “sports” “Kayaba-Ultra SR” - two-pipe low-pressure gas. They said “no” to high-pressure monotubes: their element is more a sport than a normal operation. Two sets of springs and two shock absorbers - a total of four options. Looking for the best one?
OPTION 1. Basic equipment
At first glance, the car is soft and comfortable: it does not annoy shaking on small bumps, a detailed repetition of the profile of the road. However, the idyll does not last long. Even at a moderate speed (80-100 km / h), the suspension capabilities are very limited. The "emphasis" is prone to strong vertical buildup, and the energy intensity of the suspensions is clearly insufficient for the "standard" domestic irregularities.
A little distracted, yawned a deep wave - and the car instantly goes out of balance, starting to make all kinds of "pa". Of course, a further increase in speed only worsens the situation. The behavior of the car becomes not only ugly, but also dangerous. In the bend, the Accent, strongly tilted, begins to swing from side to side and “crawls” from the trajectory. Or vice versa, it buckles with its rear axle, falling into a deep drift, which is quite difficult to deal with.
The experiments in the "rearrangement" also do not add optimism and confidence. "Smeared" reactions plus early glide. Honestly, we did not expect everything to turn out so bad. Well, the more interesting the upcoming changes will be.
OPTION 2. "Rigid" springs
Alas, the expected increase in ride height did not work. What's on the road? Yeah! Seams, joints, small irregularities became more noticeable. The car seemed to creep up, pulled in a stomach and even tried to play with muscles. In part, he succeeded, but somewhat peculiarly.
The "accent" has become tougher, more impulsive, now it is more actively repeating the profile of the road. However, native shock absorbers are still indifferent to everything that happens. As before, they allow a strong vertical buildup of the body - just its vibrations have become sharper, "sharper". But in handling, the differences are more noticeable. The car more accurately follows the wheel, behaves more unequivocally in corners. Most importantly, the tendency to skid the rear axle has noticeably decreased. Suddenly, the Accent became very nervous in a straight line and in gentle turns. If in the previous version it allowed you to relax the steering wheel relaxed, even at high speed, now it requires more attention, reacting too actively to steering.
Nevertheless, the results of the "rearrangement" speak in favor of the changes. The car sharply increased in speed, it became easier, more understandable to drive. The only thing he lacks is stability during the correction of slides.
OPTION 3. “Kayaba” + standard springs
And again the tightened abdomen, just another muscle group was tensed.
The shock absorbers finally defeated the vertical buildup of the body: its vibrations are now under vigilant control. The reverse side of the coin: too active repetition of the road profile is accompanied by sharp vertical pulses at deep waves. Having gained the desired elasticity, the car now seemed to be flat on the road, having lost another important component - the suspension travel. They now lack freedom.
On a flat road, everything is almost perfect, at least reliable and predictable. The car is confidently driven on a straight line, reliable in fast corners and “rearrangement”. However, even minor irregularities should appear, “Accent” immediately tries to scour, to leave the intended trajectory.
OPTION 4. “Kayaba” + rigid springs
And good luck! The first test runs inspire confidence: a good balance of qualities has been outlined in the car chassis. Now the Accent is not just stable - it seems to creep over the road, ignoring most of the bumps. A small but still stock of energy intensity appeared in the suspensions. The machine does not swing on the bumps, easily swallows gentle waves. And no buildup or tiringly sharp vertical accelerations. All body movements have become comfortable for the driver and passengers. The only nit-picking is that you feel the smaller bumps stronger.
Pleasantly surprises and handling. It turns out that an unassuming little car is able to find its own "I". Having become clear and collected, the car provokes a fast active ride. Understood even in very fast bends, the Accent makes it easy to control sliding, while remaining simple and logical. And at the “reshuffle” we noted: the driver makes far fewer mistakes and inaccuracies. Now everything is under control here.
