The newly made Kalina (according to the VAZ-11183 passport), the brainchild of the Volga Automobile Plant, competes with the Opel-Kadet, which already underwent cosmetic surgery in the early 1990s, and now comes to us from Uzbekistan under the name Daewoo Nexia. What is not an eternal dispute between fathers and children?
SUPPLY FOR VIEW
In a cursory glance, both cars are assembled decently, which is commendable for the Uzbeks, and encouraging for the Russian. Smooth gaps, there are no obvious distortions of the outer panels, the doors and the trunk are easily and without unpleasant bounce. Coloring also does not cause special complaints. Nexia adequately tolerates Russian weather - this is confirmed by lengthy editorial tests. There is still little experience with Kalina, but something is already alarming: soon the bumpers will lose their gloss, with paint peeling off with pieces.
Salon "Nexia" evokes nostalgic sadness. The dashboard plastic is cheap, but the parts fit neatly - you won't find fault. To match the ascetic setting, pale, poorly readable appliances. The tachometer, as well as electric windows and central locking, are only for the rich GLE trim levels (by the way, we are considering it). But all the owners of the "Nexia" pamper with a full-time radio, four speakers and a telescopic antenna.
You sit in the Kalina, as if in a time machine. Modern interior, lots of air, nice materials and colors. Driving is more convenient than in the Nexia, although the seats would have liked to be "more fit." Nice dashboard with a digital display, on which - the mileage and readings of the trip computer. A clear minus: under a large-looking lid, a very small “glove box”. Glasses and a box from the radio are placed with difficulty.
In the “normal” configuration (Kalina has no others yet) - power windows in the front doors, athermal windows, immobilizer, central locking with remote control and even an alarm. On it, the Lada buyer can save, and several hundred "green" ones for the music and its installation will have to be laid out.
In “Nexia” on the second row you don’t particularly take a walk - there is not much space at the feet and the ceiling is low, as in the “Khrushchev”. But luggage is free - the 530-liter trunk is large, even by modern standards. True, loops eat up part of the net volume, and loading large items into a narrowed opening is difficult. You will have to forget about the transportation of long lengths: the back back does not recline.
In the back seat of the Kalina, it’s more spacious, although it’s almost half a meter shorter than the Nexia. Each passenger has three-point seat belts. Where are the head restraints? After all, they are installed even on more modest “Samaras” and “tens”. The trunk is rather big, but nevertheless more compact than the “Uzbek” one. The advantage of the "Kalina" - the rear seat is folded in parts (40:60). But the shelf covering the niche of the spare wheel is too flimsy - it bends even under a light burden.
DYNAMICS OF EVENTS
We start the engine … Yes, the model age of Nexia cannot be hidden by any restyling. True, a little noise and vibration penetrating into the cabin, almost not annoying. And remembering the price, you completely forgive Nexia’s minor flaws. The eight-valve engine is confidently driven from low revs, acceleration to hundreds in 14.3 s (measurements at the training ground - ЗР, 2001, No. 6) inspire confidence: 75 “horses” are working at full strength.
And now forget that I spoke about the noise and vibrations of Nexia! It is worth turning the key in the ignition switch "Kalina", and you immediately want to turn off the engine. The interior is filled with an unpleasant loud drone of the engine, the gearbox is singing in unison. The epicenter of vibration is on the lever, from it a palpable tremor spreads throughout the body. With an increase in speed, these sounds are amplified and new ones are added - a creaky word inserts the instrument panel. Sorry - it all started so well.
Extra "cubes" and "horses" make themselves felt. “Kalina” beats “Nexia” for about a second in acceleration to hundreds, and even more in elasticity: from 80 to 120 km / h in fifth gear it accelerates almost 7 seconds faster (ZR, 2005, No. 10). But getting off on the Kalina is not very pleasant. Slightly threw the clutch, vibration and noise disappear … along with the sound of a stalled engine. Didn't hear right away? This fan of the stove is already at low speed ready to shout down the motor.
Small bumps "Daewoo" swallows quietly, and on the pits and bumps a little more suspension begins to give voice. In the corners, Nexia eagerly rolls, but on the line does not tire the driver with taxiing. In general, nothing outstanding, moderately flexible and comfortable car. True, you need to get used to the uninformative brake pedal. And remember - in the minimum configuration you should not rely on the power steering.
Kalina's pendants deserve praise - even on rough roads it rarely manages to “break through”. At the same time, the car, almost without swaying, swims along the waves of asphalt, confidently passing potholes. With a ground clearance of 185 mm, you can fearlessly move out of a hard surface - only go ahead and go bankrupt to protect the engine. Electric power steering put on all "viburnum". But get wet while you make four (!) Full turns to shift the wheels from lock to lock. You will have to sweat at high speed. "Kalina" reluctantly keeps its course, strives to tilt to one side, and reacts thoughtfully and reluctantly to steering movements. Yes, and the brakes are not understandable and effective (for more details, see ЗР, 2005, No. 8).
Nexia is so Russified that parts (even not the most popular) are, perhaps, in any city. The simple design does not deter repairers. In addition, the reliability of the machine saves the owner from frequent visits to them. “Daewoo” is recommended to service every 10 thousand km, at “Kalina” interservice mileage is one and a half times more. The prices for maintenance and spare parts are almost the same. At first glance, it’s more profitable to keep Lada. But…
Original parts of Kalina have to wait from several weeks to months, and at prices they compete with foreign cars (see table). Indeed, Kalina is a modern car, and therefore its components are not cheaper than most foreign models. Maybe reliability is not lower than overseas? Alas! For six months, the editorial berry has already visited the warranty station several times and will soon go there again.
Most of the foreign cars that fall into our market have always been more perfect than Russian cars. Riding is a pleasure! To repair is a little expensive. New items in the domestic auto industry are gradually breaking stereotypes. The ease of maintenance, for which Russian models are so fond of, is leaving. The new VAZ did not add reliability, the design became more complicated, and, accordingly, maintainability was worse.
Not so long ago, the prices of our models and affordable foreign cars differed significantly. For this, many disadvantages were forgiven for domestic cars. Now, "Kalina" and "Nexia" in similar trim levels are almost the same. In addition, there are other foreign cars in this price sector. The new generation of buyers has such a choice that fathers never dreamed of …

TO-1 (2 thousand km) in the capital for “Daewoo” costs 2500 rubles, for “Lada” - 2900; the frequency of subsequent maintenance by Nexia is every 10 thousand km, by Kalina every 15 thousand km. Daewoo Nexia is not young, but reliable and unpretentious. Good value for money.
