In two hours, one and a half hundred kilometers, moreover, make time for photographing. In addition, the nasty rain that always accompanies me at Audi presentations. And this is only half the trouble: I’m also lost my way, and you can blame the navigation system and the non-reset odometer as much as you like. It’s my fault, and you need to get out of the situation. I hope it will not be so difficult - after all, in my hands is the new Audi RS4. Well help out buddy!
ALIEN AMONG THEIR
It seems that here to the right - here is one of the pink arrows hung by the organizers. They would know how long I searched for her! But he managed to get acquainted with this serious "German", and I begin to like him. Behind the powerful, rather impregnable appearance - with widened wheel arches, low-profile tires on 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler and a pair of exhaust pipes - there is a fairly obedient car with a complaisant character.
"Audi RS4" positioned as, I quote, "a car for 365 days a year." Here is one example: a long-stroke gas pedal allows you to dutifully coward the winding streets of Italian towns. Once again you are amazed at what electronics is capable of - who else can curb over four hundred “stallions” by force? Sorry, an important adjective accidentally dropped out of the quote - not just a car, but a sports car …
Settlements are over, you can spur a little “horses”. Knowing that behind me an invisible shadow lined up a system of electronic systems that are ready to quickly correct errors, still I will not give the herd complete freedom. I’m halfway drowning the gas - and then I put my foot on the brake, running into some kind of slow FIAT. I wonder what RS4 does faster - accelerates or slows down? In both cases, you feel as if you are hanging over the road for a short while. Maybe the spirit does not keep up with the body? The dynamics are eloquently stated by the indicators - the “Audi RS4” reaches 100 km / h in 4.8 s, and exchanges the second hundred after another 12 s.
… They specially paved the route along winding mountain paths to demonstrate the capabilities of the new charged sedan. The steering is not so much sharp as accurate, and at any speed allows you to clearly record the turns. No, I won’t go faster. Suddenly some IVECO lurked behind the mountain?
IN THE NATIVE ELEMENT
The second part of the presentation is the Pirelli training ground, where we have to try the Audi RS4 on the test track. Some areas are abundantly watered by irrigation plants, while others have already dried out a bit after rain. I entered one of the turns faster than necessary. But I didn’t have to deal with the drift for a long time - the ESP 8.0 stabilization system intervened. It worked clearly and, most importantly for a sports car, turned on at the most opportune moment. Electronics favorably allows the driver to independently return the car to the trajectory, but as soon as the situation threatens to get out of control, the engine power drops and the brakes chatter.
I'll try to turn off the smart and sensitive system. It seems that Audi specialists are able to tune not only electronics. Outside of public roads, you quickly and finally become convinced of the approximate behavior of the new RS4 chassis - clear reactions to steering turns, good directional stability, and minimal roll. True, the suspension differs not only in the characteristics of shock absorbers and springs.
Ground clearance is 30 mm lower than that of conventional A4s, the front wheel track has been extended by 37 mm, and the rear wheels by 47 mm. In addition, at the request of the buyer, the Pirelli P-Zero Corsa 255 / 35R19 racing tires were installed on the RS4 for the first time. They tested the Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) for the first time on the RS6.
Quattro specialists have perfected the development, making it more compact and lighter. Shock absorbers are connected diagonally by hydraulic lines to a central valve. If it is necessary to reduce rolls in turns or pecks during acceleration and braking, the valve bypasses the fluid from one shock absorber to another. Pure mechanics and no electronics - in our day, when it seems, on the way - processors in erasers and paper clips!
But the advantages of the chassis would not be so convincing without a new all-wheel drive. Like the predecessor model, the torque between the axles is distributed by the Thorsen differential. By the way, again, no electronics - take off my hat. Now the new RS4 has become more like a rear-wheel drive car, because 40% of the torque goes forward, the remaining 60% goes back. But if some wheels stalled, then the Thorsen can translate at least the whole moment onto this axis. Nevertheless, the electronics grabbed a piece of the pie - the EDS system monitors the distribution of moments between the wheels, slowing down the stalled side.
I just studied the track and got used to the car, and the time spent at the training ground has expired. Oh, sorry to part with the Audi RS4. But I will not risk driving such a car 365 days a year - after the storm and onslaught, I want something calmer and softer. The car is wonderful, it really is able to give pleasure and arrange a holiday … But after the holiday it is always better to relax.
HORSE IN TEN CUBES The V-shaped “figure eight” with a volume of 4.2 liters is another representative of the FSI family of engines with direct injection, developed by Audi minders. A liter capacity of 100 hp / l is an excellent indicator for a serial naturally aspirated unit. Only a few sports engines could boast of such a small mass a couple of years ago - only 3.93 kg per 1 hp. And of course, the new V8 unconditionally fulfills the environmental standards of Euro IV. In addition, the motor turned out to be modest in size - it freely fits under the RS4 hood. Many technologies were borrowed from motorsport, they also used the experience of working on a 10-cylinder Lamborghini engine. One result is original pistons and connecting rods. The linear speed of the piston reaches 25 m / s - almost as in formula 1. To simplify the repair, camshafts and auxiliary units, in addition to the generator, are driven by one circuit. The element of the G8 is high revs, the motor behaves very vigorously near the red zone, and the tuned exhaust system draws in music that is pleasant to the ear. At the same time, 90% of the maximum torque is stretched between 2250 and 7600 rpm.
