Spark plugs … Everything is simple and clear - since the 19th century they have not undergone any special changes. Therefore, skeptics say that they do not particularly affect the operation of the engine - unless, of course, we are talking about frank marriage. And they divide all the candles into two large groups - cheap and “cool” or “ours” and “non-sacred”.

If we restrict ourselves to the simplest tests like “sparks - not sparks”, then skeptics are absolutely right - all the candles are the same. And if you dig a little deeper and try to find out how the same carburetor “eight” engine will manifest itself with different sets of candles, it turns out that we don’t know anything about candles …

Checking 27 sets of “figure eight” candles was like playing Russian drafts - everything seemed to be primitive, but the same, at first glance, “wicks” unexpectedly generated “out of nothing” completely unthinkable combinations - with sacrifices of quality and matte finals. Their cursory description was placed on … 85 pages of the official protocol - we did not have such an examination yet!

The work stretched into two series - let's call them engineless and motor. At the same time, in order to create the final “table of ranks”, we applied a five-point assessment of the quality of the candles. Each type of test was assigned its own weight parameter (coefficient) - the more important the measured value, the higher it is. At the same time, at each stage, the result of the best product - no matter in millimeters or in ohms - was equal to 5 points, and the worst - to 1 point. The rest, of course, were content with intermediate values. As a result, all tests without exception were evaluated by us on a single point scale.

During the first series, the manufacturing quality of the purchased candles was evaluated, including:

The size of the spark gap and the variation of the parameter in the set, as well as the difference from the declared value. Weight coefficient (VK) - 0.05.

The resistance value of the built-in resistors and the scatter of the kit. VK - 0.05.

Tightness - the presence of leaks through the insulator candles under pressure. VK - 0.15.

Quality and stability of sparking in atmospheric conditions at rated and reduced supply voltage. VK - 0.1.

What do these indicators influence? It is hardly worth explaining that all candles from one set should be the same - the higher the spread, the worse the company’s business with technology. But what can I say when, for example, the claimed spark gap of commercial interests is 50 (!) Less than the real one. The same with the resistance of the built-in resistors - more precisely, the resistance of the entire discharge passage. It is necessary to drive the technologist in the area where it can ride, say, from 40 to 130 kOhm - this directly affects the discharge energy! And it’s absolutely unacceptable when a normal-looking candle turns out to be “full of holes”: the compressor in the hands of the mechanic will stupidly show normal numbers, and the engine will vibrate, lose power and start poorly.

In the end, the candle must give a good stable spark, and the desired color. The ideal option is a bright white spark, then, as it worsens, blue, blue, pink and, God forbid, red: it is the “coldest”.

Having met candles "by clothes", we escort them to the motor cycle - to the "second series" of tests. In this case, the following are evaluated:

Integrated motor performance in basic mode. Weight coefficient (VK) - 0.3.

Integrated motor indicator in emergency mode. VK - 0.15.

Motor shutdown voltage. VK - 0.1.

Tendency to pollution. VK - 0.05.

Self-cleaning tendency. VK - 0.05.

Unclear? Maybe over time, in a thick book, we will tell you more, but for now, we note that the integrated motor indicator is calculated according to eight (!) Average parameters - here is the torque, economy, toxicity, and much more. The emergency mode implies a similar scope of tests, but with a supply voltage of 8 V - we simulate driving on a rainy cold night without a generator. The voltage of complete cessation of sparking characterizes the possibility of starting the engine when the battery is “planted” with prolonged torment.

As for sediment testing - from pollution to self-cleaning, this is another attempt to evaluate the operation of candles in real operating conditions. At the same time, an indirect assessment of the compliance of the actual glowing number of candles with the declared one is given. On the one hand, the temperature of the candle should not be too high so as not to cause early heat ignition, and on the other hand, not too low to burn out deposits on the electrodes. Note that the temperature of the candle largely depends not only on its design, but also on the type and setting of the engine. Therefore, it looks strange when the same candle is recommended for hundreds of completely different motors. In aviation, you will not find this: there for each engine there is a strictly specified type of candle.

The tendency of candles to pollution was checked when working on a “hellish mixture” of 80% A-76 gasoline, 15% diesel fuel and 5% mineral motor oil. Before such "torture" the candles were weighed. Then, at idle, 20 l of this “body-weight” was produced, after which the candles were twisted, the insulator and the housing were cleaned without touching the electrodes, and weighed again. Only after that they were sent “on the run” at a fixed load mode (4000 rpm, 70% of the throttle opening). Secondary weighing (with an accuracy of 0.0001 g) made it possible to evaluate the self-cleaning of candles.

So, nine key parameters were accumulated, on the basis of which the purchased candles will be issued a verdict. Experts already got a set of probes and began to measure the gaps, but for now we will take a break and talk about the color of the spark discharge …

The color of the spark clearly indicates the energy of the discharge. The ideal option is a bright white stable spark that does not change its position. The worst is the red “jumping” spark: it is (we repeat) the coldest. This is connected with the combustion process in approximately the following way: the initial flame is formed in the spark gap of the candle, and then moves along the combustion chamber with a certain speed. Everything depends on this speed - and engine power, and profitability, and toxicity. It is influenced by dozens of different parameters - from the shape of the chamber to the location of the valves, but the initial speed depends only on the composition of the mixture, which we “do not touch and do not change”, as well as the size of the ignition zone (linearly!) And temperature, and quadratically! Therefore, the spark color can accurately predict the behavior of the engine.

We performed atmospheric analysis of the spark discharge. They may object that the conditions are different under pressure. This is so - but at the same time, sparking at 20 ° C and atmospheric pressure is more difficult than at 500 ° C and 10 bar at the end of the compression stroke. Therefore, candles that spark better in air work more confidently in a real engine, which was confirmed by our tests.

So say that all the candles are the same, gentlemen skeptics? Well, well … We will not specifically seek out shortcomings, but we will make a reservation right away - it is considered absolutely unacceptable:

gap in the sparking chain;

lack of sparking in at least one of the modes;

the presence of large leaks that do not allow to increase the pressure in the pressure chamber.

We will consider conditionally admissible:

the presence of periodic skipping flashes;

etching pressure from the pressure chamber with a speed of not more than 1 bar / s.

And now we take up the protocol …

E-mine! Half of the candles are no good …

Hmmm … Buying a normal candle turned out to be almost more difficult than a fresh battery! Moreover - here, unlike batteries, nothing depends on the attention of the buyer, nor on the decency of the seller. Lottery!

Okay, get to the point. In the protocol - more than fifty tables; Your attention is invited to one - the final. All grades, as already noted, are given on a five-point scale - as in school. When calculating the total amount, each estimate is multiplied by its own weight coefficient - as a result, the maximum theoretically possible estimate could again be five points. And the minimum, sorry, - count.

The points earned are an objective factor: what happened is what happened. But there is still a subjective assessment - as in figure skating: it happens that the venerable prize winners are liked by the public much less than the second-tier athletes deprived of medals. So here - you evaluate the appearance of the products, you estimate their price and sometimes you understand that, despite the good points scored, the language still does not turn to recommend some of them. As a result, we still arranged the tested candles according to the ranking table - the more points, the higher it costs. And next we expressed our personal opinion about the purchase - after all, they paid their money …

So, all attention is to our comments on the photo. The general impression can be expressed briefly - it has begun! The homegrown "counterfeiters" received a powerful help because of the cordon - and such that representatives of large companies themselves sometimes can not confidently say how to distinguish a fake from a prototype. Something strongly smelled by China … For example, where the Brisk candles we bought were made - it does not look like in the Czech Republic. And where does the Champion come from, with a triple variation in resistance and a fragile insulator? Why did Denso speak so weakly - was she predicted to be a winner? In what packaging do you need to buy four-electrode “Boschi” in order not to run into the “wrong” kit? And what did they sell to us under the guise of Finval?

In short, out of 27 tested sets of candles, the words “satisfied with the purchase” deserved only 14 sets - a little more than half. But another thing is even worse - there is no certainty that the same candles bought in another city and in another store will behave the same way. After all, even the “platinum” winner, one of the four candles almost failed in terms of tightness - so what to complain about the rest?

The winners in our marathon, perhaps, should not be called. Although, whatever one may say, “boshs” look better than others - in addition to pleasant tournament lines, they can also boast a chain of branded stores in which the probability of encountering a fake is still lower than in other places.

So what - to put the car on a joke and change a horse? She has nowhere to screw a candle … If you do not count only on luck, you can still advise you to follow the dictum of the classic about accounting and control! Three procedures are enough:

- carry a small tester with you and check the resistance of the candles when buying - obviously inoperable will be eliminated immediately;

- Before installing the candles, still measure and adjust the spark gaps - especially when it comes to cheap options;

- see how the sparkle sparks when scrolling the engine from the starter - preferably on a dark background. Both color and stability will be immediately recognized.

You can’t check the tightness of the candles without a special device, but the dark belt around the hexagon will indicate this serious defect - it appears some time after the candles are installed on the engine. It’s better to get rid of these right away.

And the head was replaced correctly with the head: the former completely lost their tightness … Another thing, why did this happen so quickly - already to the first MOT? And why was such a junk equipped with his brand new “Liana”, which was obviously not collected from us? However, after the level of quality that we had a chance to familiarize ourselves with during our examination, there is nothing to be surprised at.

After all, who said that bad candles are made exclusively for the G8?

- Where do you buy such rubbish? Our candles are good, and you specifically looked for the hell!

Candles were purchased as always - in the central stores of Moscow. Markets and all kinds of tents went around a mile away. We were interested in "serious" products - with checks and all that …

- You can not judge a brand by one randomly purchased kit - this is a lottery, not a test!

And why should the buyer play the lottery, who, instead of a workable set of candles, gets something indecent for his money? He cannot and should not buy candles in kilograms in order to then look for normal samples. In addition, ZR is still a journal, not a jury trial: we have different tasks.
