The bearing of the "Zhiguli" semi-axis is firmly taken on our roads. Another client drove a fairly fresh “four” with a run of about 30 thousand - and the deadline for the left axle shaft has already reached the deadline … There are strong knocks on the move, and with such a shift of the brake drum that the edges of the shield removed aluminum shavings from it (photo 1). They removed the axle shaft: in general, nothing unexpected. As usual, the first separator in the bearing died (photo 2), from which little was left. And it seems that something fell under the balls, which is why some lost their shape. Of course, the omentum also suffered - it was replaced immediately. Then they put a new half shaft, bought in a reliable store. Here I will make a reservation right away: the trouble is, if you buy a “scorched” axle shaft, the bearing on which the garage craftsmen replaced. Anyone who has seen the self-dismantling of the assembly when the locking ring does not hold the axle shaft in the rotation and it “shoots” to the side with the wheel, is unlikely to forget this picture.
The axle shafts (all 100%!) Are tested on special stands - the ring must reliably hold the axial force of 2000 kgf. And what guarantees should be expected from the "craftsmen"? Once before our eyes, someone planted a ring, heated not as expected, to 320 ° C, but … red-hot. A dispute ensued, after which they decided to check the shear force on the stand. It amounted to only 50 kgf! And there is nothing strange about it. With strong heating, the steel behaves almost like plasticine. The ring is warped, its dimensions "go". The haste takes when you remember how many such "masters" offer their services. You have probably heard how easy it is to replace the bearing and ring using a bonfire and a suitable pipe.
How does a damaged bearing declare itself? First, the noise. If the tracks of the rings have crumbled out, an even hum is heard. Quite often it is confused with the hum of the gearbox, in which the liner nut is not tightened. As a rule, in such cases we listen to the car on the go. If the hum disappears on the “neutral” - the gearbox is not in order. The buzz remained - the bearing. The separator often falls apart; in this case, during the rotation of the wheel you can hear a muffled periodic hoot. But blows and rattle are also possible - remember our client. A phonendoscope helps us in localizing the noise source, and this operation often eliminates unnecessary expenses for the owner of the car. Indeed, at noises, inexperienced people are so often deceived by imposing the replacement of more expensive components and assemblies!
Another sign of trouble is the large radial play of the bearing. Having hung out the wheel, shake it up and down vigorously. The backlash of the "killed" bearing is large (at the wheel level - up to a millimeter or more), it is difficult not to notice. This is reflected in the oil seal: an oil leak begins through it. When changing a stuffing box, "leaked for no reason" (do you really believe that?), Without checking the axis, this is a big mistake. Many do not know how easy it is to bend the axle shaft when hitting a curb, etc. But according to factory requirements, the permissible "deflection arrow" should not exceed 0.5 mm!
