wheeled tractors and even armored personnel carriers! And now they have made four-wheel drive tractors for road trains with a gross weight of up to 120 tons. Previously, such heavy trawls were carried by MAZs with V12 tank diesels or foreign cars - “Tatras” and “fauna”.
At the site in front of the KamAZ Scientific and Technical Center, there were two tractors. Three-axle KamAZ-65226 (6x6) and four-axle KamAZ-65228 (8x8) look like giants next to ordinary Kama trucks. The difference in "growth" is more than a meter! Of course, the front axles gave their increase, but the cabs were very high. Not otherwise, some huge engines are hiding under them. And most likely, imported.
Indeed, the most powerful engine of the 8x8 tractor is a 600-strong inline Six. On the chromed valve cover, the inscriptions CUMMINS and DOHC - that is, two upper camshafts, four valves per cylinder. The length of the motor is such that the cooling radiators and intercooler had to be taken out of the cab and equipped with electric fans. There is a huge, to the envy of street racers, a vertical silencer. A six-speed Allison automatic transmission is also being brought from overseas.
There is no dazzling chrome under the three-axle cab - German Deutz diesels are usually painted in dark gray. Motors from Cologne are known in Russia according to the Bamovian “magiruses”. Although those “airmen” cannot be found in Europe, we remember them. It is not surprising that KamAZ chose the "German" as an alternative to the "American." He fit almost perfectly into the motor compartment - the V8 with a volume of 16 liters is slightly less than the YaMZ-238. Here, the radiator is already in place, only two-section, and the intercooler heat exchangers are mounted behind the cab.
At the beginning of 2005, Kam-AZ with Tsanradfabrik established the ZF-Kama joint venture. It is not surprising that the ZF gearbox is also on the triaxle - though, for now, of the German assembly. And the "razdatka" "Steyr" is not new to Kam-AZ - this was used on sports cars.
Structurally, the giants are combined with a dump truck of the heavy KamAZ-6520 series. From it, for example, the rear bogie - bridges with hub planetary gearboxes. An alternative to the domestic ones is the Bulgarian Madara bridges, which trace their pedigree to Skoda, and the more expensive Hungarian Raba bridges. The front axles are also with planetary gears, and CV joints with double crosses.
The frame is unified with heavy dump trucks, but its spars with a height of 270 mm and a thickness of 7 mm under such loads were reinforced with inserts for almost the entire length. How else? The first cars were ordered by gas workers - to transport bulldozers and excavators along winter roads and off-road, and there they know the price of strength.
For the test, I chose a four-axle - it is the most powerful and loaded with a ballast of 27 tons. The route is on the outskirts of the city.
On the road, and even with a trawl, it is too early to release it - an experimental machine. Perhaps this explains the fact that you do not even climb into the cabin, but rather you pull yourself up, as on a horizontal bar, clinging to the handrails. The distance between the steps is very large and there is no suspended "stirrup".
On the doors from glass to the floor, a new all-molded upholstery. There is no bare iron on the dashboard either - it is made of fiberglass and looks quite worthy. The fuse cover is on Italian furniture hinges, but our lock is from the mailbox. Yes, even from the refrigerator, if only it would not creak and slam shut the first time.
The steering column is adjustable in height and angle, but there is no pneumatic clamp. Polyurethane foam bagel is thick, comfortable. The seat can be put on air suspension, but so far the old ones are creaking habitually. With a new, raised roof, the volume in the cabin was increased, and there is even a high one, where the second sleeping bag looks like a hammock. Of course, you won’t conquer Europe with such a cabin, but our drivers are quite happy.
There is no clutch pedal, but the GMP controller is on the tunnel. I put the lever on "D", remove it from the parking brake and gradually increase the speed. The car accelerates, almost without feeling the load. The noise is surprisingly small, but not only due to the excellent sound insulation - the "American" himself works quietly.
