ON THE WIRE

It looks like an ordinary Citroen-C5, except that it is large on board: “By wire” (by wire). But when you open the door, you immediately see something: instead of a steering wheel - a steering wheel, similar to an airplane, there are no pedals!

We'll figure out. The accelerator is controlled by levers in the middle of the helm, and brakes are controlled by buttons on its rear side. At the ends of the "horns" are the levers of the wipers, lights and the same direction indicators.

In addition to the striking differences, no less interesting details are hidden under the serial body of the Citroen-C5. There is no steering column. Instead of it - sensors, electric motors, additional batteries. There are a couple of such engines and power sources: the principle of duplication was borrowed from aircraft construction. There is no mechanical connection between the helm and the steering rack, as there are neither rods nor cables from the gas and brake pedals. This is called “wire management.”

What for? First of all, for the sake of passive safety. Both the speaker and the pedal assembly are dangerous in an accident. It is no coincidence that designers spend a lot of effort and money to make them “brittle”. Without hard links, the steering wheel along with the instrument panel (in the test Citroen it is still standard) is easy to install on the left or right, but at least in the middle. And finally, modern electronics is more durable and reliable mechanics.

More reliable than reliable, but over more than a century of car history, designers have taught them to obey the driver well. But what about the wires?

Several companies have been experimenting with similar machines for years. Citroen - since 2001. The first was the S-Crosser concept (ZR, 2002, No. 4), then the prototype S-Airdrim was created (ZR, 2003, No. 1). According to French testers, the current C5 drives much better than its predecessors. But…

I managed to get used to the manual gas and brake quickly, although I still manage to stop without pecking with great difficulty. Much more difficult with the wheel, or rather, the helm. If you turn it slowly, the car responds quite clearly. But the device is clearly not keeping up with the sudden movement. “Tse-fifth” first thinks over, and then, like a typewriter in a computer game, literally jumps to the side - especially if the angle of rotation is large. An unpleasant sensation exacerbates the "cry" of tires.

In general, if I had to take that Citroën onto a public road, I would move slowly and smoothly - in a trolleybus mode. True, no one has set such a task for the car or drivers yet. In addition to the problems of fine-tuning the car and training drivers (maybe for those who are driving for the first time … sorry, the helm, it will not be difficult to get used to it), there are also production ones: it’s more profitable to assemble the wire management on new platforms. The developers acknowledge that the device will go into production no earlier than in ten years.

ONLY WITHOUT HANDS

The second program number is Citroen-C3 City Park, that is, with a device that facilitates parking.

Riding along the sidewalk crowded with cars. Speed - no more than 25 km / h, the right direction indicator is on (required!). By pressing the P button on the dashboard, I inform the car: I am looking for where to stumble. Here the car found a place worthy of its size and notified about it with the voice of a “metal lady” and a signal on a large display in the middle of the dashboard. Following the instructions, I brake, standing parallel to the car, for which I must call in and press the "auto park" button. Next is the most interesting. I take my hands off the steering wheel and continue to listen to the commands of the Iron Lady and glance at the display. Stunned, the steering wheel spins by itself: to the right, now to the left! I only include first and reverse gears and pedals. With the "automatic" process is even simpler.

It looks, to put it mildly, unusual! Probably, similar feelings were experienced by contemporaries of the first cars: there is no horse, but the “it” rides! A colleague from television in excitement even blindfolded. Indeed, maneuvering is possible only by voice. By the way, the car will notice and the pedestrian. But in general, riding with my eyes closed is forbidden. The developers emphasize: the driver is responsible for parking, and the city park only helps him.

Of course, this system still has some troubles: sometimes, for some reason, the device skips a place quite suitable for Citroen-C3. We have to take back and drive forward again. I assure you that doing this on Parisian streets is a little easier than on Moscow. The desire to stay on the left, say, on a one-way street, City Park also understands with difficulty. But this car is just a prototype.

Although the witty colleague snapped up: “Blondes will be delighted!”, The device, I think, will help out not only the heroines of jokes. Seasoned, of course, smile. But, you see, even if a beginner parks his car competently and quickly in urban confusion and turmoil, everyone will benefit. The question is cost, and we will recognize it in five years. Developers will need so much to bring the system to mind and a reasonable price.
