IF FOLLOWING FORMALITIES

In carburetor cars, it was possible to use imported motor oils of the API SF quality group or domestic ones - such as API SF. From a formal point of view, it was right to call our products with the import classification given on them. With the advent of our injection vehicles, we are obliged to provide them with engine oils that meet the next, higher quality group API SG (nobody, by the way, bothers using these oils in old carburetor machines). It is such products of domestic production, suitable in the new conditions for all traditionally Russian cars, that we have collected today in examination, having made, however, a reservation for one. The sample from Qualitet, which fell on the test, has a "diesel priority" in the marking, namely CF-4 / SG.

This time we decided to evaluate motor oils using Gost's test methods. Where allowed, toughened versions of standard tests were chosen.

They collected so much data that they decided to limit themselves to only the most important, breaking them into three tables. In the first, in addition to the indicators “alkalinity” and “ash”, dynamic viscosity at low temperature is given - it determines the starting properties in winter.

The second table summarized the results of testing the samples for resistance to high temperature oxidation. In addition to the main indicators inherent in this method, the viscosity of each oil is shown here before and after the tests.

The third table is the most modest, but perhaps the most revealing. It contains the results of the most intelligible test - checking the oils for a tendency to varnish formation.

HOW IT HAPPENS

The closer to the finale, the more curious how it all ends. So we are close to the denouement.

Among the tested parameters, those that can be clearly attributed to insignificant were not, but there are others that require attention in the first place. Specialists attributed to them the tendency of oils to varnish already mentioned by us. From the table. Figure 3 shows that there is no agreement in the test comrades - there are both leaders and lagging behind. Yes, and the table. 2, which shows data on who lasted for how many hours, again demonstrates the differences between the samples.

The only table - the first - gives reason to praise all participants. If only because none of the samples reached the maximum allowable dynamic viscosity - all showed better than European standards.

Having become acquainted with all the results, you can decide for yourself whether or not we agree with our assessment of the overall results. Our preferences are on the side of LUKoil and TNK. Less than all of us were satisfied with the results of Spectrol and Consol.

OIL CLASSIFICATION

According to the classification proposed by the American Petroleum Institute, the quality level of oils for gasoline engines is indicated by two letters of the Latin alphabet, the first of which is always S (from the word Service), for example, SF SG, SH, SJ, SL. A similar picture is with diesel oils, but here is the first letter C (from the word Commercial) and sometimes the numbers are used: CC, CD, CE, CF, CF-4, CG-4. Since most oils are universal today, their labeling includes both “gasoline” and “diesel” properties. API SG / CF oil is intended for gasoline engines (in the first place in the marking “gasoline SG”), but can also be used in diesel engines (CF letters indicate this). And, for example, the oil marked API CF-4 / SG was developed for diesel engines, but can be used in gasoline engines.

DEGREE OF ALL-SEASON

Oils with viscosity SAE 10W40 participated in our test. Their official range of application for most cars is from -20 to + 35 ° C (sometimes it occurs -25 to + 40 ° C). However, this speaks more about the ultimate capabilities of the oils than about the conditions for their regular use. If in your climatic zone the temperature in winter often drops to –20 ° С and lower, it is preferable to use oil with a viscosity of SAE 5W40, and at temperatures up to –30 ° С and lower, with a viscosity of SAE 0W40. However, in the latter case, a successful launch is still not guaranteed - other factors interfere: the degree of battery charge, fuel quality, vehicle condition, etc.

It is unprofitable for oil producers to be shy, as we understand it, therefore the range of application indicated on their canisters varies in different limits. We found the most immodest figures on the charts of the Spectrol canister: from minus 35 ° to plus 45 °. This is especially curious against the background of the results presented in table. one.

PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PARAMETERS

Alkaline number and sulphated ash say a lot. On the one hand, they indirectly characterize the amount of additives in the oil (the more there are, the higher the two parameters), on the other, each of them has a different effect on the operation of the engine.

A separate alkaline supply, as was usually thought with us, is already good, because it determines the ability of the oil to neutralize acidic products formed during operation. However, the sulfur content - the main source of acids - in current fuels is less, and the science of oils does not stand still. Today, imported oils of a very high level of quality are appearing, whose alkaline supply, however, is not so high.

Finally, ash - a sign of a high content of additives - in itself, as it turns out, is not useful (we do not say "harmful" so as not to scare). With its growth above the permissible level, soot on spark plugs increases. Sometimes experts recall that it is also capable of increasing wear. However, we will not dwell on this: according to other scientists, these are nothing more than theoretical premises.

ELV METHOD

A laboratory unit for the oxidation of motor oils simulates the operation of a single-cylinder engine. The parts are heated artificially, which makes it possible to more accurately maintain the thermal regime and, if necessary, change it.

In our case, we used the so-called tightened ELV method - with increased gaps in the O-rings and a shorter discharge cycle time.

The criterion for evaluating the washing properties of oils in this installation is varnish deposits on the side surface of the piston, expressed in points. They are put down by specialists, comparing deposits on the piston with a reference scale (see photo).

On our samples, a noticeable scatter was noted. A half-point or a point, scored by some samples, can serve as a reason for optimism - approximately as much are expected from oils like API SG, well, and two points are more alarming.

DK-NAMI METHOD

It allows you to evaluate the oxidation resistance of oils using a laboratory setup resembling a tilted centrifuge. Typically, results are expressed in hours of operation. We estimated how much sediment will remain after 30 and 40 hours of oil operation at a temperature of 200 ° C.

Viscosity after testing is generally not standardized, but a change in the parameter eloquently indicates the possibility of oils - the less it has changed, the better. But the viscosity before testing is normalized by GOST, and European standards, and even by some manufacturers. For example, AvtoVAZ prefers a viscosity of more than 14 mm2 / s (or cSt) for this category of oils.
