Do You Remember - The Blizzard Was Angry

In the “studded” company, along with the winner of our last year’s test “Nokian Hakkapelita 4” and a slightly modernized “Michelin Ivalo 2” (it is now studded at the Michelin factory in Davydov), the modified Carving from Pirelli and the unchanged Goodyear. Leading brands are diluted with Korean Kumho and Japanese Yokohama. There are inexpensive Nashvenskie novelties from Amtel and Rosava, as well as Medeo - YaShZ tires, which won popularity unprecedented for domestic manufacturers last winter.

Note that the non-studded new items from Nokian, Yokohama, Toyo and Rosava are presented on our test for the first time. The benchmark for comparison is the well-known Bridgestone Blizak WS-50.

The leader among the studded ones was the Nokian, unchanged from last year, with square spikes. I was pleased with the Yaroslavl Tire - Medeo performance in our test is laudable. But Rosave and Amtelu have something to work on.

Progress is also noticeable in the studless camp - they have gained almost feline tenacity. Their grip on ice approached the studded ones. And this is when braking in use! (Today, all tire manufacturers, when creating new models, are guided by cars with ABS.) Of course, this is possible with ten to twelve degrees of frost. There will be a difference between “spikes” and “non-spikes” at near-zero temperature, because only the spikes can cling to the ice by pushing a layer of water.

One more observation - there is no very noticeable difference in the coupling properties of “spikes” and “non-spikes” among the leaders! The only difference is their behavior during operation. It seems that everything that could be improved is already improved today, and therefore no clear superiority of any one manufacturer is yet to be expected. Unless, of course, the time comes for the next revolutionary decision.

Together with the author, tire tests were carried out by Valery Pavlov, Andrey Obrazumov, Evgeny Larin, Anton Mishin, Anton Ananyev, Dmitry Devyatov and Yuri Kurochkin.

Studded Tires

Country of origin - Finland

Speed Index - T (190 km / h)

Tread Depth - 9.0 mm

Tire weight - 7.1 kg

Features - directional tread pattern

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 90 / 1.5-1.9 mm

Average price * - 3400 rub.

Value for Money - 3.70

This is what is called a cool tire! Tugging from the place of a pretensioner, but acceleration both on ice and on snow is possible with intense slipping. Good braking performance on the verge of blocking and almost the same. Very fast unlock. Such high performance tires will please their owner is not disinterested at all - they are almost three (!) Times more expensive than the "budget" Amtela or Rosava.

Confident control is given thanks to a very good reaction of the car, as well as a steering wheel “filled” with feedback. There is a slight skid in the corner, but it is easily countered by the steering wheel or gas.

In the snow, the tires are great, but on the pavement, the reactions to steering the steering wheel are perhaps too sluggish. In this case, the brakes are very good.

Tires are hard - all road bumps are transmitted to the seats. In the passenger compartment, low-frequency noise is clearly heard in the speed range from 60 to 80 km / h.

The best grip on snow, excellent handling, maneuverability and directional stability on a snowy road.

Comments on smoothness and directional stability on asphalt, high price.

Highly recommended for icy, snowy and poorly cleared roads.

* The price recommended by the manufacturer.

2nd place

888.8 points

Country of origin - France

Speed Index - Q (160 km / h)

Depth of the tread pattern - 9.4–9.7 mm

Tire weight - 8.2 kg

Features - directional tread pattern

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 90 / 1.8 - 2.0 mm

The average price is 2100 rubles.

Value for Money - 2.36

New spikes (now these tires are equipped with steel two-flange spikes of “Turvanasta”) have benefited the Michelin and have allowed to break on the podium. Now he is confidently behaving on the winter road and is not afraid of snow powder ice. Touching and acceleration on these tires are effective on the verge or with little slippage. Braking, if you do not block the wheels, is very effective. With blocked, it’s a little worse, besides, after locking, the tires unwind for quite a while.

The behavior in the turn is “front-wheel”: when the gas is discharged - drift, when added - demolition. In the initial phase of entering the turn, a slight delay is felt. Moving in deep snow is better than pulling. Stuck - backing will come to the rescue. On a snowy road, the car “floats” a bit, as if the tires rest against the snow rollers in front of the wheels. On the pavement, exchange rate stability is quite high. There is a high-frequency pulsating noise in the range from 60 to 100 km / h. Small irregularities on the body are almost not transmitted.

The best braking on ice, very good economy, good handling and directional stability on asphalt.

High noise level.

Recommended for any winter roads and various driving styles.

861.9 points

Country of origin - Spain

Speed Index - Q (160 km / h)

Tread Depth - 9.5 mm

Tire weight - 6.9 kg

Features - directional tread pattern

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 90 / 1.4 - 1.6 mm

The average price is 1900 rubles.

Value for money - 2.20

The coupling properties of these tires are high and stable both on snow and on ice. Sudden disruptions to gliding disappeared in the past. Now, “Carving”, while speeding in an ice turn, begins to glide smoothly and also smoothly restores rolling.

Nevertheless, some problems remained. In the initial phase of a slippery turn, it is desirable to set the car on a given path - it will be very difficult to turn it on an arc.

Driving and acceleration on ice require accuracy - only on the verge of slipping, but in the snow tires are very good. Their overclocking behavior is similar to the Nokian HKPL4. Braking is very effective on the verge of blocking. In deep snow they go forward uncertainly, but backward - freely.

Stability on a snowy road and clean asphalt is simply excellent, which can not be said about comfort. The body perceives all the bumps in the road, and at speeds of 60–80 and 100–120 km / h, the cabin is simply filled with a “helicopter” drone.

The best acceleration on snow, high lateral grip properties on ice, excellent directional stability on asphalt.

Low level of comfort.

Recommended for any winter roads, especially those who are willing to sacrifice comfort for speed.

Country of origin - Russia

Speed Index - Q (160 km / h)

Depth of the tread pattern - 9.5-10.0 mm

Tire weight - 9.0 kg

Features - directional tread pattern

Number / protrusion of spikes - 90 / 2.0 - 2.1 mm

The average price is 1350 rubles.

Value for money - 1.57

Very good domestic tires of the Yaroslavl plant, which won in this test one of the recent winter leaders Goodyear UG500. Medeo turned out to be better in braking on ice and asphalt, more convenient in acceleration and control with decent directional stability and patency. Lose mainly in fuel consumption.

Touching and accelerating is preferable to a pull or with a little slipping. Braking is effective on the verge of blocking. They behave badly in a bend, although they are somewhat late in driving. They react to different coatings, preferring dense snow. In loose loose sharp breakdowns are noted. More predictable behavior on ice. In deep snow you can always go back.

Quite comfortable, quiet tire, despite the fact that the spikes protrude excessively from the rubber.

Good maneuverability, handling on snow and ice, directional stability and better braking on asphalt. Value for money - one of the best in our test.

Increased fuel consumption, low directional stability on a snowy road.

We especially recommend it for any winter roads and deep snow, although they must warn that spikes with such a protrusion will not last long.

Speed Index - T (190 km / h)

Tread Depth - 9.5 mm

Number / protrusion of studs - 90 / 1.3-1.5 mm

The average price is 2200 rubles.

Value for Money - 2.65

“Goodyear” opens the category of strong middle peasants, noticeably breaking away from previous participants in our test (the difference between 5th and 6th places is almost 45 points!). Unlike the past, the current "goodyirs" are not so eager to hold on to the ice. Touching and accelerating the car only "on the edge" or with a little slipping - in this tire are similar to Michelin. This effect is generally inherent in tires made specifically for cars with electronic traction control. Braking with them is much better: you clearly feel the boundary of the lock, after which the rotation of the wheels is quickly restored.

There is a noticeable delay in the reaction of the car to the steering wheel. Driving on these tires requires dexterity and getting used to - sudden breakdowns and recovery after slipping make the wheel constantly work. Prowls in a straight line on loose snow. It starts well in deep snow, but further movement is only possible pull-pull. However, this is a pretty comfortable tire.

Very good grip on snow, as well as brake control, fuel economy.

Low manageability and directional stability on a snowy road.

Recommended for any winter roads with not very fast driving.

6th place

775 points

Country of Origin - Philippines

Speed Index - Q (160 km / h)

Tread Depth - 9.0 mm

Tire weight - 8.0 kg

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 90 / 1.3 mm

The average price is 1690 rubles.

Value for Money - 2.18

Fairly balanced tires, but not for snowdrifts. It is not surprising - what a winter it is in the Philippines! Confident acceleration is overshadowed by a small slip when starting.

Braking is not as effective as that of the best tires, but understandable - the locking moment is well felt. They are legible in coatings - they cling to dense snow, and when alternating snow and ice, the car “walks” a little. The reaction to the steering dovot is inexpressive, "twisting" leads to exit from the intended path. Good handling in drift, although the slip is slightly tightened. In deep snow, it is better to move at the maximum possible speed for the given conditions, in extreme cases, pull; starting is difficult.

In general, they are very close to the previous Kumkho. Differ for the worse in fuel efficiency and comfort. The likely reason is that the tires are quite heavy, of the imported ones, only the silver medalist Michelin Ivalo 2 and the Yaroslavl Medeo are heavier. On the asphalt in the car, it becomes noisy, when driving irregularities there are sharp shocks from the road.

Very good braking and directional stability on the pavement.

Very low grip on winter roads and cross-country ability.

Recommended for asphalt roads partially covered with rolled snow.

7th place

773.2 points

Country of origin - Korea

Speed Index - T (190 km / h)

Tread Depth - 9.0 mm

Tire weight - 6.9 kg

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 90 / 1.3 - 1.8 mm

The average price is 1630 rubles.

Value for money - 2.11

The main advantages are high comfort (the noise of the spikes is almost inaudible) and fuel economy. On snowy and icy roads, one should not expect special tenacity of these tires.

Acceleration - only a pull (a sharp loss of efficiency when slipping). Preference for dense snow. The big difference in grip on ice and snow. In the latter case, braking is not bad, but only before it hits the ice - there the efficiency drops sharply.

The initial response to steering is quite acceptable, but if the speed is high, the car can suddenly and unexpectedly get out of control. On a snowy road, the tires break into demolition, then into skidding. Slides are too tight. Pre-emptive steering actions are necessary in order to somehow control the car. It is only possible to move in deep snow, pulling it back, uncertainly leaves.

Pretty weak tires with low grip on ice. Apparently, the Koreans do not quite clearly represent the requirements of this winter.

The best in fuel efficiency, provide a high level of comfort.

Low traction, modest cross-country ability, worst braking on the pavement.

Recommended for lovers of a leisurely and economical ride on cleared asphalt roads.

8th place

771 points

Country of origin - Ukraine

Speed Index - S (180 km / h)

Depth of the tread pattern - 7.0–7.9 mm

Tire weight - 7.6 kg

Number / protrusion of the spikes - 192 / 0.8 - 1.0 mm

The average price is 1200 rubles.

Value for money - 1.56

This tire has twice as many studs than European standards require, but, recessed into the rubber, they help Rosava weakly. These tires lead only in acceleration on ice - you can't argue against so many spikes.

At the start, the car “hangs” a little - the spikes are located one after another, but further acceleration is quite acceptable. When braking - a sharp breakdown in the south and a long recovery. These tires effectively brake only on the verge of blocking. They are not friends with snow - here braking and acceleration are very modest. Movement on the virgin lands is practically impossible. If it’s “locked”, you have to go only on the move, directly and without stops. If you stop, you won’t be able to move, as well as to get back. When driving on loose snow, the tire scours, as if looking for something to catch on.

Almost two hundred spikes adversely affected comfort. Tires are hard and noisy, humming even on snowy roads. The two most unpleasant noise peaks are at 50 and 70 km / h. It is only surprising that these tires are quite economical.

The best acceleration and very high lateral grip on ice, good fuel efficiency.

Low maneuverability and directional stability on snow, loud noise.

It is possible to use on clean asphalt roads with little ice. Not friendly with the snow!

This is not the first time that winter Amtel has been losing to its opponents. The reason, in our opinion, is the small protrusion of the main part of the studs, which is why tires behave more than modestly on ice. Touching and acceleration are effective only on the verge of slipping. The speed, which provides reliable traction in the corner, is quite low. On mixed surfaces, riding on these tires requires special care - the difference in grip on ice and snow is large, and if you turn onto the ice in a bend from the snow cover, the car may “slip sharply” - become uncontrollable. There is no drift in critical situations, demolition prevails. In deep snow, the movement is only a pull or with strong slipping. Touching is uncertain, but here it is selected quite reliably.

We note good comfort and directional stability on the asphalt, the best brakes. No thorns are heard, but the tread noise is distinctly felt. In short, Amtel has potential! It is only necessary to pick up good spikes and to master the correct studding of tires.

Very good braking on snow and best on asphalt, low fuel consumption.

Low grip on ice, inconvenient braking and acceleration control.

Recommended for clean asphalt and slightly snowy roads.

Value for money - 3.9

Perfectly balanced tires. In almost all snow and ice exercises, the best or very good results, excluding braking on ice. And not only in measurements, but also in estimates.

You need to start off carefully, but the acceleration is confident, even with a slight slipping, especially in the snow. On it, by the way, is very good handling. Good reactions to the first turn of the steering wheel and a dovor when driving in an arc. There is practically no skid.

At high speed in an ice turn you feel a small drift, which only helps a skilled driver.

Braking in the snow, even in a block, is very effective, although it is required to keep the blocking edge on ice, otherwise the braking performance decreases. Rectilinear movement on loose snow is better than all the tires presented. In deep snow, either a pull-up, or with an energetic slip. Back out confidently.

The most economical tires with good road holding on asphalt. Only stiffness is annoying - I just want to slightly lower them.

Very good grip on snow and ice, excellent directional stability, good handling and throughput, better economy.

Very hard tires, high price.

Highly recommended for any winter roads, especially for snowy roads.

Country of origin - Japan

Driving on ice and heavy snow is the best among studless tires. The car goes easily, intensive acceleration - with any degree of slipping. Braking is effective both on the verge of block and skid.

Manageability is very good - at the entrance to the bend you feel informative on the steering wheel - it is so "transparent" that it allows you to feel what kind of coating is under the wheels. The car "under the gas" is screwed into a turn, and the confidence to "keep the road" resembles the "studs" Nokian HKPL4. Tires for those who would like to enjoy driving on a winter road. We note here that this tire scored in our tests only 0.8 points less than the leader. The difference is negligible, although the price is almost twice as attractive! An iron argument when choosing a kit for the winter.

Off-road close to Bridgestone, but allow you to move with strong slipping. When driving on a snowy road, the car pulls a little into more loose snow. They are not very friendly with asphalt - a slow reaction to steering. In addition, the brakes in the unit are worse than all the others. The most comfortable and at the same time quite economical tires.

High traction on snow and ice, good comfort, maneuverability and fuel economy.

Worst brakes on the pavement.
