(True, it always seemed to me that pink glasses are more suitable for this.)

If you have ever met such glasses, you should know that their glasses are yellow. To understand how this promising “magical” device works, it’s enough to just finish high school, where in the 11th, probably, class will explain to you that the yellow filter really increases the contrast of the image. Due to what? Everything is very simple. White light, as you know, consists of seven colors, and each is determined by its wavelength. But the rays of light gather on the retina not to a point, but to a small spot … Now we "cut off" other colors except close to yellow. This is the essence of the light filter: a glass plate delays part of the spectrum. As a result, the rays of light on the retina gather almost to a point - the image contrast increases. This is well used by skiers and athletes - skeet. Thanks to the yellow glasses, the former perfectly see all the irregularities of the track against the background of white snow, and the latter see targets flying in the bright blue sky.

On the border between day and night, when it is no longer light, but not yet dark and all the colors of the world are fading, and the images blur before your eyes, artificially increased contrast can really help. Recall photographers making their masterpieces in cloudy weather with a yellow filter. Well, what do drivers see? Most likely, if something improved in one place, then in another, on the contrary, it got worse.

This is precisely the case with the second promise of manufacturers: to improve color discrimination. Generally speaking, this sounds strange when you consider that we have lost part of the spectrum. In addition, the color palette in the field of view of a motorist is much more diverse than that of a skier or skeet. Any filter not only weakens, but also transforms the usual colors. For example, we don’t think about the fact that looking at a traffic light, you can’t immediately understand if the green light is on or not, not knowing its location. Indeed, strictly speaking, green already does not look completely green.

It is also extremely difficult to identify the color of the machine. Blue, green, purple, cherry - all this will seem like a dark shade of anything, but not the true color of the car. If the average driver in yellow glasses drives into the intersection with the traffic light turned upside down, he has a chance to leave there with his feet forward.

All of the above is confirmed by ophthalmologists and opticians. Moreover, the perception of the environment through the yellow filter to the human eye is unusual. Watching cityscapes in this color, our poor eye can get tired. At the same time, it will be a little slower to focus vision on an unexpectedly appearing object than usual. And even fractions of a second on the road can lead to trouble.

It is worth saying that in people after 40–45 years old, their vision does not change for the better, even if the results of the examination at the regional ophthalmologist please you. This also applies to twilight vision, when the eye does not distinguish between images in low light conditions, and the notorious "night blindness", and the speed of focusing the eye on the subject. The latter applies to absolutely all people over 40 years of age: with age, the lens of the eye "switches" longer from a close object to a distant one. Add here the fact that in the cabin of a rare car the glasses glasses will remain clean, and if the windows of the car are tinted …


Of course, a lot depends on the individual characteristics of the eye. But one should not have illusions, even though of all the colors, yellow least weakens the flow of light. Now let's move on to the third point of the promises - “reduce glare, remove glare from the light of oncoming headlights”. Due to what? It is difficult to imagine a person who decided to wear such glasses at night, and it is precisely then that oncoming headlights dazzle us. Dimming the daylight, at night they immerse us in a yellowish gloom, and it is more than difficult to drive a car in such conditions. So, they need to be worn at the moment of approaching the oncoming car, and then removed immediately - right? However, if there is nothing more to do while driving, then, probably, such manipulations are useful - at least you will not fall asleep. As for the statement “reduce blindness by weakening the effect of motor visual memory”, we leave it to the conscience of the authors, perhaps they plan to make a revolution in science.

Nevertheless, this point of promises of manufacturers of "driver" glasses, obviously, most of all excites drivers. Therefore, we checked the reliability of advertising using the focus group. Five subjects who were not familiar with the purpose of the experiment, one at a time entered the office, where a device was installed that could simulate a different degree of illumination, contrast, and also blinding.


Absolutely all glasses increased contrast. “Subjects” were able to examine lines on a table that had never been seen before. However, when blinding turned out to be useless, eyesight fell equally for everyone - as experts had expected.

The last two points in appeals to buy “driver's” glasses are from a series of psychology and primitive advertising. Judge for yourself: how simple it is to use glasses with a yellow filter (even with a frame far from the laws of harmony) to "remove drowsiness and fatigue" and even more so "increase efficiency"?

Summarizing all of the above, we come to a conclusion. Such glasses make sense at dusk - during the day this is not necessary. When the sun shines brightly, the driver can always lower the visor or use ordinary sunglasses, which, for sure, already exist and as an image-building thing fit the owner perfectly. At night, any glasses with tinted windows are stupid in their pure form. And if the impossibility to distinguish one color from another is called an improvement in color discrimination, then it’s definitely time for someone to see a doctor, and not an ophthalmologist. To enhance your mood, it is better to eat a chocolate bar or remember a funny joke.

The advertisement says that it’s Fedorov’s glasses. However, in the ISTC “Eye Microsurgery” named after academician S.N. Fedorov was informed that they had never developed anything like this and have nothing to do with any “driver's” glasses.

Despite the nightmarish rim “a la sick tsetse fly”, the experimental subjects liked these glasses more than others. It turned out that they increase the contrast much better than their counterparts. Unfortunately, they do not remove blinding. It's a pity!

There is no doubt that such glasses really improve contrast. The remaining points of the promises, to put it mildly, are extremely controversial. As a car enthusiast, I just do not find any sense in them. Light rain is unlikely to cause difficulties for drivers, and no glasses will help in a continuous downpour. The same with fog. At night, using them is rather dangerous than necessary, even if the headlights are periodically blinded. You can successfully disperse with the oncoming one, but not notice someone in your lane.

Of course, all these parameters are individual. Probably the people who composed the ads were still thinking about the consequences of their promises. I will not be surprised if suddenly there is a person who agrees with all these formulations, and the glasses really have a positive effect on him. But for most people this is not so, and for certain groups such an acquisition may not be just useless, but dangerous.
