For example, a neighbor of one of the authors warms up the injection “ten” at the entrance to the working temperature all year round: otherwise it “pulls poorly and eats a lot all day.” Many, of course, have heard that not only the condition of the engine and transmission affects fuel consumption. Sometimes we just release liters of gasoline, and at the same time rubles into the air. The one that wraps around the car on top or fills the tires. Even those who read something about aerodynamics sometimes think that sophisticated science is far from everyday life. By the way, does your car have a roof rack? Have you checked the angles of the wheels for a long time? And when did the tires pump up?

CONSUMPTION AND CONSUMPTION

To begin with - a "reference" ride on a working VAZ 2114. Test conditions: motion at steady speeds (see table). At the same time, side factors, say, the nature of the driver, are less likely to affect indicators. Fuel consumption and speed are measured by professional equipment.

Well, Samara produced predictable and, by the way, very good indicators. Of course, in real life, when a car accelerates and slows down, misses traffic lights for a long time, the consumption will be different. But in this case, not records are important to us, but the starting point.

We’ll make a small adjustment to the car’s parameters: set the wheel alignment +24 mm. This is within acceptable limits (15 mm ± 10 mm), but at the upper boundary. This value was not established by chance. Experts say: "Samara" over time is prone to increase the angle compared to the nominal. On the go, it’s almost impossible to notice, that's why the owners are not in a hurry to service. And how much extra fuel is burned? It turned out a little, in everyday life you will not notice the difference. Even at high speeds (see table). Therefore, we leave the convergence in the state typical for so many “Samar” and begin the most interesting part of the program.

LITERS ON THE WIND

We are going to the cottage. Or on vacation. You will need a roof rack. And you don’t need to put it! He’s been there almost since the day he bought the car: the fasteners have long and firmly become attached. Isn't it true that there are many such cars on the streets? It’s an unpretentious “option” for itself and, it seems, does not ask for money. Oh oh

At a speed of 60 km / h, an empty trunk eats an extra 200 g per hundred. It seems to be a little again - if you do not multiply this number by the annual mileage and don’t remember how indignant we are, underfilling a couple of liters at a dishonest gas station.

Let's go faster: the forgotten laws of aerodynamics begin to operate! At a speed of 80 km / h, consumption has already increased by almost half a liter, and starting from 100 km / h - by 0.8 liters!

Drivers who are accustomed to increased noise “in their heads” must accept the fact that, together with the air flow that seeps through the empty trunk, liters are running out of the tank, rubles are being pocketed.

Well, now we are going to the country. We are not going to wind up a cabinet or refrigerator on VAZ 2114, we will restrict ourselves to a couple of suitcases and bags. The mass of the car has not changed much (recall: factory instructions forbid loading more than 50 kg onto the roof), but aerodynamics … Indirectly, a noticeably increased noise reports about it. It doesn’t matter - you can cover the window, and make the music louder.

Surely even many of the experienced garage people will not believe that a perfectly functioning Samara is capable of swallowing more than 12 liters of gasoline per 100 km without choking; You do not drive at a speed of 120? But even at the “children's” 80 km / h cargo on the trunk added to the consumption of almost 1.5 liters. Agree, this is not a penny!

GASOLINE WENT TO …

Motorists with experience remember the old joke about the "spark that went into the tank." Does fuel sometimes disappear there? Without unloading the trunk, we reduce the pressure from the prescribed 1.9 atm by only 0.4 atm. On the eye, and even more so on the go to catch the change is hardly possible. And what will the flowmeter show?

What it should have been: in the “cylinders”, instead of the exhausted air, another 0.35–0.5 liters per 100 km, depending on the speed, was consumed. And, of course, the faster you drive, the greater the cost overrun.

SIMPLY SIMPLICY?

The test results are by no means a discovery. But, you see, often we forget about the simplest things. Although sometimes, trying to make the car less voracious, not sparing time, we diagnose the injection and ignition service or tirelessly tinker with the carburetor and breaker, change the candles. But it’s much easier to keep an eye on tires and wheel alignment. As well as rationally stacking things without cluttering the roof unnecessarily. If you can’t do without it, remember: the difference between the appetite of a car without a trunk and a loaded one will noticeably increase with increasing speed.

Let's go back to the performance of a working car and compare them with the results of the fifth race. Agree, the difference is noticeable. A real ride - with acceleration and braking will make it even more tangible. Think about how much extra fuel you spend, say, from Moscow to the Black Sea coast?
