So close to the abyss I will never drive up again, even for the sake of a photo. UAZ Patriot, whom I met in the mountains of the North Caucasus, pushed for a careless act. You know, sensible fellow.

An acquaintance with the machine took place a long time ago (ЗР, 2005, No. 3, 6). And they knew that there were a lot of changes compared to the predecessor Simbir. But how did the factory dispose of imported components, which was achieved by the modernization of production, will the results of finishing work together with the engineering company Prodrive be visible? The car itself must answer these questions.

On mountain roads, it’s a sin not to appreciate a comfortable steering wheel and an imported power steering, a new gearbox and better sound insulation. As, however, it is difficult not to notice the vibration of the steering column when driving potholes. The factory workers say that they were able to significantly reduce it, but they still had something to work on.

Being familiar with the previous model, he was afraid that the cooling system could not cope with high loads in the mountains - he glanced at the temperature gauge and sniffed. Fortunately, it was not the smell of Tosol that came through, but only the sound of an additional electric fan.

So, getting accustomed, I came across pleasant (with rare exceptions) trifles that were not there before. It was thought that the Patriot became extremely close to a universal car, and not purely utilitarian, as we are accustomed to seeing any representative of the brand. And although the terrain doesn’t scare him, the Patriot will most likely spend his life on asphalt. Yes, by the way, and he.

Serpentine Jerking

A small, about one hundred and fifty meters, straight section made it possible to overtake the truck, and until the next one you can again “come off”. The Korean box “Dymos” counts the transmissions, and we are discussing with a colleague what we like about the car and what it is worth blaming.

The main reason for praise is the just named unit. Not only does it allow you to quickly sort through gears up, but, which is especially important in the mountains, it easily turns on “down”, allowing you to brake the engine on any descent. I don’t remember another domestic car, where at the speed of 40 km / h the first gear would switch so easily, and at 80 km / h - the second gear.

The most serious complaint is the Patriot’s steering. On the whole, it is much better and more accurate than that of Simbir, but the steering wheel definitely does not want to return to "zero" - there is almost no reactive force. Perhaps the disadvantage could be corrected by slightly reducing the gear ratio. And the steering wheel would become sharper.

And here is another truck, again crawling.

The Ulyanovsk residents did not save on trifles - they installed deflectors for second-row passengers in the rear of the central tunnel, closed the skids of the front seats and the space under the rear with plastic casings. Meanwhile, the opportunity to overtake again appeared - I suggest the motor work hard. It turned out to be harder to get around such a “sausage” on the rise than on straight sections, so at the beginning and at the end of the maneuver I had to turn the steering wheel a couple of times. I immediately remembered the gas-filled shock absorbers, modernized for the sake of controllability of the front suspension, rear springs lightened to three sheets. After all, this is no longer the simbir of Simbir with its deep banks during fast steering. To modern "SUVs" is far, but what you compare with them is already good. However…

When you tune in, like a tuning fork, in a different way, your impressions change again. I would like to have modern chairs, a comfortable platform for the left leg, another steering wheel, which has already been mentioned. Although the pedal assembly has undergone changes, the brakes remain old (at least it seems so). On a significant part of the stroke, the pedal has almost no resistance, and only then you feel the effort, and the car slows down accordingly. The braking process, as it were, is two-stage - first select the move, then dose the force … Perhaps it is worth returning to the previous tonality.

There is no doubt that in a niche of up to $ 15 thousand the market received a strong player. A large SUV, with 20% of imported components (including gearbox), quite decent behavior on the highway and good geometric cross. This is not a foreign car, but not UAZ in the usual sense for most. For good reason, he turned into UAZ - the manufacturer writes his name in Latin letters: Patriot.
