For example, to bring a sports car for competitions, lumber or a concrete mixer to the cottage? Yes, you never know how much cargo an ordinary trailer can’t afford, and hiring a tow truck, auto transporter or KamAZ is both expensive and troublesome.
In Europe, small-sized bulldozers, excavators, power plants, and even small yachts carry trailers for cars - conveniently, cheaply and independently. Car transporter trailers are not so popular with us yet, but this, apparently, is a matter of time. Two Russian enterprises have already taken up their development - the Moscow factory of special vehicles and the Stepinsky LLC Trailer, and the German Barthau and BPW are being brought from abroad.
The designs are very similar - a four-wheeled chassis with a rubber-harness suspension, a low galvanized frame, inertial brakes, a winch for loading cars, similar dimensions and carrying capacity. The difference in workmanship and price. Let's see what kind of trailers are together.
BARTHAU MODEL MZ-2702
A solid floor made of waterproof plywood and low sides allow this trailer to be used to transport any goods, even bulk ones. Sand, brick, long-lengths, light construction equipment, but you never know what can be placed on 7.5 m2 of body area. For securing cargo along the perimeter of the platform, rearranged eyes are provided, and for loading wheeled vehicles - a manual winch and entry ramps, which are removed in a transport position in niches under the floor. The wide wheel of the front support does not fall into the ground, so even a loaded trailer can be rolled manually if necessary.
The rigid rubber harness suspension is equipped with shock absorbers. Thanks to them, the trailer goes smoothly, gently, regardless of loading, does not bounce on potholes and does not swing the tractor.
The floor, like Barthau’s, is made of waterproof plywood, but is lined with corrugated aluminum plates along the edges of the passenger car’s rut - during heavy use, the car carrier plywood, though laminated, wears out under the wheels. Entrance ladders seemed a bit narrow - before arrival they need to be set exactly along the track. At the front side, two stops are firmly fixed under the wheels of the transported car. On the one hand, not bad - a reliable fixation will not hurt here. On the other hand, these same stops determine the position of the car in the body and, accordingly, the centering of the cargo. Therefore, to place its center of gravity exactly between the axles of the trailer is not always obtained - one of them is overloaded. The trailer is equipped with a spare wheel - a useful option, especially if the spare wheel of the tractor does not match the size or mount with the trailer. But there are no shock absorbers, although mounting points are provided. Well, without them, of course, cheaper, and the buyer, if he wants, will be able to install them yourself.
Unlike the previous two, this trailer has no sides, which somewhat limits its use for transportation, for example, of bulk cargo. Nevertheless, the floor with the ladders laid on it forms a fairly flat area. Adjustable stops allow you to accurately center the transported car or even leave them in the garage. The parking brake is equipped with a gas spring, which gives some comfort when using. Doubts about the reliability of the design (will it not work in motion from shaking?) Have been dispelled in one of the rental companies, where such a trailer has been working safely for the second year already. There are no complaints about this site. But they replaced the worn flooring. Apparently, plywood, even waterproof, is not the best material for the commercial use of an auto transporter.
The rubber-harness suspension is supplemented with shock absorbers, there is a spare wheel, and, which is especially useful, loading supports are provided in the rear of the body. Thanks to them, the trailer does not crouch when it arrives at it and, in addition, it can be loaded without a tractor. Without such supports, the drawbar must be fastened to the ball of the coupling, otherwise the trailer will inevitably stand on its hind legs.
