LONG TIME NO SEE?
Both brands are Korean, but Nexia is now being collected in Uzbekistan, and Accent in Taganrog. The bodies are welded and painted solidly, nothing rattles in the cabin, emergency lights on the dashboards did not light up during the test. It is these trifles that domestic models are so lacking.
Cars belong to different generations, which is visible to the naked eye. "Accent" does not look charming, but the appearance confirms that we have a modern car. "Nexia" is hard to hide age, and many turn away from the old woman for this reason.
Bumpers, painted in body color, now go even to inexpensive cars - aesthetically, cheaply and impractically. The Uzbeks, however, stick rubber moldings to plastic chippers to protect the body with minor contacts. The Accent has no life strips - owners should avoid parking "by sound."
Designers were not too puzzled over the Accent dashboard: it is rather banal and nondescript. On the other hand, it’s no worse than many inexpensive cars. Count the buttons on your fingers - rear window heating, fog lights, emergency lights, electric corrector wheel. However, the Daewoo dashboard is also not overloaded. It’s unusual to control the intermittent wiper mode - the pause is adjusted by the handwheel on the “dash”, and not on the steering column lever.
Daewoo boasts a large glove compartment and a convenient ashtray. By the way, in Hyundai the retractable cup holders block access to it - a lover of smoking a cigarette under coffee should be puzzled by this fact. The plastic in the Accent is nobler, and the doors are slammed shut in a foreign fashion, without bounce.
Many "Nexia" in the factory are equipped with full-time radio tape recorders. Music lovers will surely find flaws in the sound. Most of them are quite satisfied with the quality of the musical accompaniment. Accents are offered with audio preparation (four speakers and an antenna), and players for cassettes or CDs are installed by the dealer - for a fee.
Sitting in the Accent is convenient - using just two adjustments, you quickly find the right position for a good chair. Large drivers will appreciate the “long” adjustment in the longitudinal direction. The chubby steering wheel can be adjusted in height. Eh, it would be more spacious … True, the Nexia seems even closer - either because of the low-lying steering wheel (there is no adjustment, but the rim is thin), or because of the overhanging visor above the instrument panel. In addition, in the Taganrog car, you can adjust the position of the belt so that it does not press on the neck. In “Daewoo” I could not do this, although the slot in the central rack hinted that the strap should travel up and down.
And how do passengers in the second row feel? In "Accent" - obviously more comfortable, a couple of moderately well-fed people will travel in comfort. The return move of Nexia is the luggage compartment, which easily plugs into the opponent’s belt with dimensions. True, for the weighty luggage, perhaps, it is more convenient than the Hyundai - the opening is larger and the loading height is lower. You can also fold the back of the rear seat, quickly turning the car into a cargo-passenger one.
WE WILL GO, WE WILL CARE?
Just set up the mirrors first. On the "Nexia" they are without heating and electric drive, even in expensive trim levels. "Accent" earns an additional plus for large mirrors - during rebuilding you do not need to turn your head.
After the tight Nexia handbrake, you doubt whether the cable has broken in the Accent - it's so easy to manipulate the parking brake. However, the steering wheel on the "Daewoo", despite the amplifier, is harder to twist.
You forgive a lot of “Accent” for the nature of a 1.5-liter engine with a capacity of just over one hundred “horses”. The motor pulls confidently after a thousand revolutions and does not sour almost to the limiter. He does not spur on an aggressive ride, but eagerly responds to the owner's command to quickly accelerate. Against this background, the Nexia unit with the same number of valves and "cubes" seems sluggish. At first it slowly unwinds and only after three thousand revolutions begins to come to life. It is a pity that agility lasts for a short while. Fans of a measured ride should better opt for the Nexia with an eight-valve unit: this one is more confidently driving at low revs, and they are asking for less money.
Both engines are far from quiet. But Nexia’s voice is rougher and more annoying, and the accent’s sonorous song at medium and high speeds is less annoying. Tires also make their contribution to the soundtrack: Nexia shod in Continental, the localization prompted Kama to the Accent.
On the road, the Hyundai is more interesting than the Daewoo - it reacts more clearly to steering commands, and heels less in corners. In addition, the Accent has a more comfortable suspension: it swallows bumps more gently. The weak point of both cars is the brakes. They can not boast of tenacity, nor informative. For reference, the “accents” in the improved trim levels are equipped with an anti-lock system.
HOW DO YOU THINK?
The Hyundai Accent in the expensive M / T3 was hit on our test, and the most affordable Taganrog car (M / T1) is on par with the most stuffed Nexia. But let's compare the equipment of the expensive Nexia and the cheap Accent - in the arsenal of both are sixteen-valve motors, power steering, air conditioning. The "Uzbek woman" is richer in four electric windows, a central lock and a radio tape recorder. Do you think these inexpensive options are more important than modern exterior and interior, nimble engine, transformable luggage compartment?
On the other hand, the price of a car is only a down payment. It is equally important how much the car will pull out of the owner in the course of life together. And here the “Accent” loses - maintenance and spare parts are on average one and a half (sometimes two times) more expensive than Nexia’s.
Low price is still one of the main trump cards of Nexia. These cars in simple configurations cost the same as the models from the VAZ-2110 family, and servicing them is no more expensive. But as soon as the Daewoo, in an attempt to compete with more modern models, begins to acquire options, its cost rises and its attractiveness drops. Our test confirms this. However, we just set the emphasis - decide what to prefer.
1.5 liter, 102 hp, manual 5-speed gearbox, M / T3 trim, $ 12, 075.
1.5 liter, 85 hp, 5-speed manual gearbox, GLE trim, $ 10, 700.
Hyundai Accent - a dynamic, comfortable and generally modern car. A worthy alternative for the money will have to find.
Overall rating 7.9
+ Powerful and high-torque engine, comfortable front seats, large exterior mirrors.
- Mediocre brakes, expensive maintenance and spare parts, no rear head restraints.
Daewoo Nexia is essentially a well-built Samara. With domestic cars, it is related not only by price, but also by longevity on the conveyor. Retirement is not far off.
