A clue there, aft - another nameplate "Verso". Yes, this is a new minivan that has just begun to be sold in Russia.
It is curious that the new van has only one name in common with Corolla. There is no platform relationship, like the first generation of five-seater Verso. The market required a seven-seat modification, and in order not to overload the chassis, it was decided to use the components and assemblies of the larger Avensis. As a result, the width of the minivan increased by 65 mm, the base by 150 mm, and the maximum weight by 300 kg. The result was a completely new independent model, however, the name Toyota Corolla Verso was retained so as not to be confused with the even more impressive Avensis Verso.
NOT ANY ROBOT SMARTER THAN A MAN
My acquaintance with Verso began with embarrassment. The selector of the M-MT robotic “automaton” was puzzled: there is no letter P on its line at all, but instead of the usual D, E! Really in cars for Russia the English Drive was replaced with the original Russian “Eden” ?! Unfortunately no. The letter E stands for Easy - lightweight and, apparently, hints at the ease of movement. Why fence such a garden, I did not understand. But habits will have to be changed - turning off the engine, you must definitely tighten the handbrake, otherwise the car may roll to “neutral”.
… Yeah, and my row went - I release the brake pedal and quickly, until Verso had time to roll back, I press the accelerator. The car starts to jerk - damn, I’m not getting used to this box! In fact, this is the usual "mechanics" with automatic switching and clutch drive. In traffic jams there is not enough “creeping” mode, which is provided by the torque converter. When accelerating, the robot is thoughtful, half-second pauses are annoying even with a quiet ride, and even with a dynamic one it’s just enraging - a good driver switches five times faster! With a robotic gearbox, acceleration to 100 km / h takes 12.7 s, and with the same “mechanics” - 10.8 s. How can one not recall that the word easy has another meaning - unhurried …
The ES mode slightly improves the matter (from Easy sport - lightweight sports). High revolutions last longer, and, therefore, there is no need to go down when a kick-down is triggered. However, this does not always save the box from the jerking fuss.
But the 1ZZFE motor - the only one possible for Russia, which Avensis is equipped with, is good. With a volume of only 1.8 liters, but with variable valve timing, it develops 129 hp. and excellently pulls at any speed. Oh, try it with the usual "mechanics"! This combination probably matches the character of the suspension much better, which works great in fast bends, despite the high center of gravity. The flip side of a tough character - tangible blows on potholes, especially on an empty car. A long base contributes to stability on the highway, but turns into slowness: not on any street Verso will turn in one go.
PANTS TURNING OUT …
“With one movement of the hand, the passenger compartment can be transformed into a cargo area” - the phrase from the description is true only in the second part. Indeed, all five seats of the second and third row can be folded and get a spacious, absolutely flat area. But about one movement … God had to pull the coveted handle how many times, until the next chair agreed to take shape. And the covers of the three glove boxes are too bristling. On a less thoroughbred car, such flaws would have gone unnoticed, but on Toyota's famous quality … Did the Turkish assembly affect it?
The main trump card of Verso, like any minivan, is a comfortable, spacious interior that can accommodate seven adults. It is quite permissible and even desirable for the driver to have a height that is above average - or just raise the seat, which is driven by a deep landing, a high glass line and a half dozen centimeters of headroom. And a highly suspended brake pedal - even a shoe of the 43rd size takes it only with a toe.
Two separate seats of the third row with the folding system Easy Flat-7 - this is a separate song! At first, I considered them to be children’s, but it turned out to be quite adults, you just have to move the second row.
In EuroNCAP crash tests, the new Toyota Corolla Verso> received five stars and scored 35 points, showing the highest class result - for the first time in a minivan nine airbags were hidden, including a knee airbag for the driver.
However, safety is expensive - among the seven-seater compact vans Toyota Corolla Verso disputes the primacy in price with the Volkswagen Turan. In the initial configuration of Terra, it costs $ 26, 100 and can offer an immobilizer, an on-board computer, ABS and EBD, heated seats, power mirrors and front windows, an audio system with a CD player, air conditioning. Our car with an “automatic” is $ 800 more expensive, and the top Sol variant is two thousand more: foglights, TRC traction control, VSC stability system, climate and cruise control, rain sensor and something else. However, we still have time to compare the newcomer with rivals, because now they sell the Renault Grand Scenic in Russia, and soon the new Opel Zafira will appear.
