Just looking at this car, it seems that it alone is able to fill the entire lane. It is not just massive, it is monumental - the Chrysler 300C Touring, with all-wheel drive and a V-shaped “eight” under the hood. What did the fusion of American traditions with German technology give?

It's hard to believe, but the 300C Touring is not as big as it seems at first glance. Flat sidewalls, a high glazing line, a luxurious false radiator grille - all this gives solidity and weight to the car, which is actually noticeably smaller, for example, the BMW “seven”. How not to doubt your own eye!

In an enormous engine compartment, an eight-cylinder “Chemie-Magnum” clinging lonely to the front shield of the body, for weight distribution, is a little short of 5.7 liters, or, to use a non-metric language, up to 350 cubic inches. No multi-valve heads, adjustable pipelines and valve timing - two valves per cylinder, one camshaft, from exotic perhaps two candles per cylinder. Of course, today 340 hp. and 525 N.m are not record figures for such a volume, but who dares to say that this is not enough? Although the American market has a more powerful version of the engine - 6.1 liters and 432 hp!

SECRET OF ITS CHARM

And again, the appearance is confusing. The giant all-wheel drive station wagon, it would seem, should roll over the arrows of the polygon weights. However, with a tank full, he barely exceeded two tons - by modern standards, not so much.

Equally amazing discoveries in the cabin. Leather seats with a thick pillow and backrest look impressive - to match the car, but steal so much volume! Even the immense-looking luggage compartment contained only half a cubic meter of foam blocks. However, it is not surprising - under the first floor there is another one, and between them a whole set of drawers for small items. If you get to the next "underground" level, find the "dokatka" instead of a full reserve.

But still, the main thing in the car is the driver's seat. At the wheel of the 300C Touring, it is immediately noticeable that the Chrysler is written together with Daimler today. Mercedes right stalk switch not to be confused with another. You can find fault with the original dashboard - the glass glare in the sun. But the devices themselves in a deliberately old-fashioned style are simple and understandable, like a pleasant greenish display on-board computer.

Three hundred and forty “horses” under the hood promise outstanding dynamics, and these expectations are generally justified. Although, to "grind" on dry asphalt, power is not enough - after all, four-wheel drive. But if you do not let go of the right pedal for half a minute, the speedometer needle will go beyond 200. At the same time, switching occurs as smoothly as with smooth acceleration. The whole acceleration is accompanied by the velvet soundtrack of the V-shaped "eight" - and pulls once again to press the pedal.

But a common language with the brakes is more difficult to find - the pedal travel is large, the deceleration is disproportionate to movement. In combination with the outstanding dynamics of acceleration, this initially confuses, but the stopping distance is normal (see the table of measurements). True, usually cars developing at 250 km / h stop 4-6 m earlier. The hope that efficiency will increase after several attempts did not materialize - the rear pads overheated.

A powerful car is appreciated not only for fast acceleration and braking, but also for high average speeds. The Chrysler 300C Touring has little resemblance to a sports car, but the speeds at which it is capable of cornering are impressive - its long base, wide track and four-wheel drive make it very stable. On irregularities, you need to be careful - although the energy consumption of the suspension is high, the buildup is able to fairly correct the trajectory. However, things will not come to rotation - insures ESP.

On straight, but uneven roads, the energy intensity of the suspension is enough, and the Chrysler 300C Touring remains comfortable. But the ground clearance of 125 mm under the plastic protection of the engine compartment clearly hints that it will be possible to take advantage of all-wheel drive only on flat roads.

ON THE WAY

The car attracts well-deserved attention. From a practical point of view, the 300C Touring is far from ideal, it has a full range of qualities that make it memorable. Like that huge suitcase that passengers at the airport will certainly watch. Its owner does not hesitate to be noticeable in spite of reasonable, but mean practicality.

The debut took place at the New York Auto Show in April 2003. Body: sedan and Touring station wagon.

Engines: gasoline 2.7–5.7 liters (193–340 hp). For the USA and Canada, also 6.1 liters (432 hp).

Transmissions: 4- or 5-speed automatic; rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive (with engines of 3.5 and 5.7 liters).

Options: standard plus additional equipment.

Price in Russia: sedan - from Є39, 700 ($ 51, 000), station wagon - from Є41, 700 ($ 54, 000).

Test car: 5.7 L (340 hp), automatic transmission, four-wheel drive, Є61, 200 ($ 79, 000).

SUMMARY

The Chrysler 300C Touring is a very high-speed road cruiser. Not recommended for those who do not want to attract attention.
