Yes, the “Peugeot 407 SW” in terms of emotional perception, of course, was a success. The considerable sizes, recognizable and at the same time very individual design. Clear, embossed lines, an unusual palisade of side windows, huge blocks of lighting equipment and, of course, the highlight is the glass roof. By the way, this is the basic configuration of this version of the “407th”: metal will have to be ordered as a rather rare option.
Hardly refraining from superlatives in evaluating the wagon's exterior, I will immediately give the floor to practical opponents. Those, of course, will scold a huge front overhang, unimportant visibility. Yes, strongly tilted windshield racks will interfere with the driver.
STYLE ABOVE ALL
The newcomer definitely became more respectable than his predecessor, he acquired the family features of a large, solid car. At first, you even get lost looking at the hood line that goes “to infinity” or the narrow and terribly distant opening of the rear door window. It seems that the wagon, at least in length, is longer than it actually is.
Driving tools did not cause comments. A large spacious seat, a puffy, leather-trimmed steering wheel - all this, of course, is regulated with a margin. The speedometer scale is traditionally with odd numbers, the bottom right is a proprietary oil temperature gauge. The novelty of the model is also emphasized. In addition to light gray scales and silver rims, bright red dots of LEDs flashed at the ends of the arrows: a trifle, but original.
My enthusiasm is again tempered by the meticulous “opposition”. Say, a rib on the ceiling is directly above the head, and the front pillar of the body interferes not only with the review, but also with the entrance-exit. The back seat seems spacious, but the feet are stuck in niches between the floor and the front seat cushions. A stylish roof makes you crouch - this is something universal! Yes, it seems, carried away by individuality, the creators neglected practicality. That's the roomy luggage compartment: the rigid shelf above it looks bulky. If necessary, it, of course, develops accordion, but so reluctantly that the option with a flexible curtain would be preferable.
COMFORT OR CONTROL?
Excellent mutual understanding of the driver and the car thanks to the tuned chassis settings is the highlight of many Peugeots. Will a beginner “play” by the same rules?
It is still difficult to judge this - a straight line, like an arrow, does not favor an assessment of handling. But here you can’t help but feel the playful temper of the engine, “coming to life” at 2000 rpm and rather smartly leading the tachometer needle to the mark of 6000. Its 158 “horses” just right for this, by no means a small car. Thanks to a six-speed gearbox and a noticeable pickup of the engine after 3500 rpm, the Peugeot is perceived as quite frisky.
It is worth praising comfort and soundproofing. On the speedometer for a hundred and fifty, somewhere in the depths of the engine compartment, the engine is quietly singing, and the passengers are talking without raising their voices. Pleasantly surprised by the possibility of pendants. Like a large ship, the 407SW sways smoothly on the gentle waves of the roadway. At the same time, the car is not inclined either to vertical buildup or to a detailed repetition of the profile of the road. Wagon pendants do a good job with small bumps, while being tolerant of potholes. In general, a lot of attention is paid to comfort.
But what about handling? Here, perhaps, again nothing unusual. Just in this "four hundred and seventh" is more like competitors, classmates than the "Peugeot" of past years. Everything is convenient, familiar and … again comfortable. The car is ideal for high-speed lines, assertive in gentle bends. But you should go into a turn faster, you will feel a fair roll of the body. Then the car will slide smoothly outward with the front axle and only then catch on, remember the traditions of the brand. And already in the middle of the arc he will try to correct the situation by chattering the stabilization system.
Well, this behavior of a respectable station wagon is quite logical, only it seems to be missing something …
