The time of the map and the compass has passed; the time of sextants, compasses, astrolabes and bearded navigators has long passed. Now the matter is that it will become completely impossible to get lost. Since the satellites of the NAVSTAR system flew in orbits, and the meaning of the abbreviation "GPS" (GPS) has ceased to need clarification, terrain orientation without the participation of intelligence has become available not only to the American soldier, but also to completely civilians in everything the world. But knowing your coordinates does not mean getting to the right place. And although satellite signals are received everywhere, navigation systems in Russia do not yet work.

NAVIGATION OR NIFIGATION?

To understand the beauty of a real navigation system, you need to see it in action at least once. For example, let’s say, Frau Stolz is traveling from Hanover to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and only knows that this is a resort town somewhere in the Alps and that she ordered a zimmer from Frau Müller there for the weekend. And what autobahn leads there and how to find the very guesthouse Frau Müller, and even the fact that Garmisch and Partenkirchen are two different towns, she has no idea, since she has never been there in her life. And she also has no atlas. But there is a monitor showing the stretch of road on which the frau is located. The red thread along the web of roads is the route. Not just, note, a route, but a specific one. It is possible by the shortest route along the autobahns, along the picturesque rural paths, bypassing big cities so as not to get stuck in traffic jams … But the arrows suggest which direction the frau is currently moving, where she needs to turn left and right and all that. And the monitor functions so precisely that it can bring the frau to the guesthouse she needs and to the nearest parking lot next to him … It is not necessary to look at the display - there is voice guidance that will remind you of the upcoming denouement in advance.

With such a system, Frau can travel anywhere - even to Venice, even to Amsterdam. Even the discs can not be changed - now all of Europe fits on one DVD. But, as in the tale of Charles Perrault, on approaching the borders of the state, the Russian carriage turns into a pumpkin, and the navigator - into a "nifigator". And ordering a foreign car for Russia with such an option is not entirely reasonable.

Why? Because maps of our area with you do not yet exist in nature. That is, maps are available, but a GPS receiver with a map is not a navigator yet. A complete system requires not just a map, but full information about lane traffic, road markings, the shape of intersections, types of roads and prohibited maneuvers. The navigator should explain how and where to go, and not remain silent - they say, look for it yourself!

However, it is possible that the situation will still change. But more about that later.

DEDUCTION METHOD

So, from the general to the particular. A resident of Moscow or the nearest Moscow region can get a funny “toy” - a Carman i car multimedia computer, size 2 DIN. In addition to the usual “set” like a tuner and an “all-disk” player, such a device is equipped with a Russified navigation system in Moscow and the region. Connect a flash card with the Pocket GPS Pro car navigation program to the slot - and, in general, that's all: you can go.

Another solution to the problem is not directly related to the car, but it is precisely the most democratic for today. Handheld computers, “handhelds”, running Windows Mobile (in common people - “pockets”), although they do not have the popularity of mobile phones, have long ceased to be exotic accessories in the hands of businessmen. Together with a GPS-receiver and software, their price from $ 500 looks more than appetizing. Moreover, the computer itself, combining an excellent organizer and a universal multimedia device, you get, as it were, "for free." For versatility, you will have to pay with some inconvenience of use: you need to buy special fasteners on the dashboard and put up with a small and dimly backlit screen. In addition, do not forget the device in the cabin, so that when you return, you will not find broken glass and the loss of your pet.

Mobile phones, barely learning how to store a phone book, are now rapidly becoming smarter. Some of them, having received the honorary title of “smartphones”, are almost as good as “handhelds”. Accordingly, navigation is also available to them - you only need to install the appropriate program. There is no need to get confused in the wires: the GPS-receiver is connected via the “bluetooth” - this has already become familiar to many. In Russia, however, full-fledged navigation will still not work - maps are needed, but, as already mentioned, they are not.

Ariadne's thread

The GPS navigator itself is a mushroom picker's dream. You enter an unfamiliar forest, press a button and wander wherever you want. Looking for mushrooms, periodically clicking on the same button. And when you want it back, you take out the device and look at the tricky curve you trodden through the thicket. At the same time, you’re wondering how you will go back: you can stupidly repeat your own route or “cut off” directly, risking getting into a swamp or to a sapper training ground - as luck would have it.

Such a navigator will work anywhere - even in Siberia, even in the Pacific Ocean. Moreover, in "advanced" models priced above $ 300, you can load an electronic map of the area - the aforementioned tricky curve overlaps with specific highways, buildings and railways. But in a real city, all this is just a spectacular electronic replacement for a regular paper card. To lay a route, and even more so to prompt how many meters you need to take to the right, such a system does not know how. Until.

NOT JP-ES ONE

What did you fix - GPS, GPS! To know their location, American satellites … are not needed! Mobile operators offer a service such as mobile positioning. If you have a mobile phone with you, then it’s easy to calculate your or someone else’s location with an accuracy of several tens of meters. This is an order of magnitude worse than with GPS, but it’s completely fine … Just send an SMS (es-em-esque) and get information, for example, that your blockhead is spending pocket money in a computer club instead of school across the road, and for some reason your wife at the hairdresser … Accuracy, of course, is not sniper, but it can even be done with organizational conclusions. A gigabyte of memory is not needed for the card - the operator will download you only a small piece with the desired part of the city.

There are also more advanced services abroad - mobile operators themselves offer “step-by-step” navigation on any modern mobile phone. Choose your destination, a vehicle (car, on foot, by bicycle), and as you move, tips will appear on the screen to get to the place of interest.
