Another technological achievement is valves with a rod diameter “failed” as after a run of a million kilometers or, conversely, exceeding 8 mm. Imagine what kind of “Kalashnikov” it turns out - in each pair of parts you have to grind, deploy, adjust. Where is it possible to achieve high productivity! And in some "services" with this full lace.

Here is the story of a Muscovite, who was exemplarily “bred for money” in a large, 35 posts, and very beautiful service. It begins corny: to 60 thousand the engine of the Niva began to spend a lot of oil, to undermine. The service measured the compression, issued a verdict: everything is bad, we need a major overhaul. At these words, the master, like a snake-tempter, whispered in his ear: “Do you want to be done quickly?” Pay four thousand to the cashier, say that you will buy spare parts yourself - work, they say, is nonsense, to grind the valves … And we will do the engine for three days - you will pay me and the locksmith. Twenty thousand will enter the circle. I agree?"

The client eventually paid 24 thousand (the details turned out to be imported). A month later, the engine again. Owner - to the same masters. They measured the compression again, sympathized … After all, it is impossible to accept a car for complaint (and now repair it for free): the owner only has a “receipt” for those 4, 000 rubles, and there were no other pieces of paper! There was no choice but to pay for the repair again.

They again removed the head of the block, found how, the last time, the burned-out valve was ground. And the amount that costed a double repair, approached a thousand "bucks". But this did not end there. Soon, the motor again troil … Only then the owner realized that way and go broke for long!

And here is the car with us. Checked the compression. In the third cylinder - low, only 8 kgf / cm2. With the addition of oil, it jumped sharply - above 13. Clearly, something with a piston group. I had to pull out the engine (it's the Niva!). Having undocked the head of the block, we found that the three exhaust valves dangled in the bushings - they were hardly replaced in that “service”. But even more revealing is this. Although the honed surface of the cylinders is almost worn out (the owner used good oil), the piston in the third simply squished! It turned out that he was “squandered” by almost 0.1 mm - with this, no rings would last long. It can be seen that in the ill-fated service, the pistons were not measured before installation.

We repaired the motor. Honing was not required, so everything cost the owner about 9 thousand. Well, when they gave him a guarantee for three months - now, they say, nothing will break in the engine - he seems to have not believed his eyes!

Pistons also have other defects. Finger holes are often not aligned. Even in the early 90's, we did not dream of such a thing. And then the pistons were made not of "second aluminum", as some "firms" today. Their products are very sensitive to variable loads, vibrations, detonation and serve about 40% less benign. Statistics is a stubborn thing! The skirts and partitions between the grooves most often break in the "secondary".
