Current trends dictate a complete rejection of dependent suspensions - with them it is impossible to achieve good handling and smoothness. Not so much reliability in harsh operating conditions as real convenience in everyday situations come to the fore. Therefore, comfort, capacity, behavior on paved roads will be on our first roles. Whoever is faster, more economical, who is better controlled - the instruments and roads of the landfill will judge. However, we will not forget about off-road - soil rises and gravel talus will replace dirt on our hubs. Too different shoes for our wards ….

Ford Explorer 4.6 V8 LIMITED

The Ford Explorer is one of the most popular SUVs in the USA, but its presence in Europe is almost imperceptible. Built to please the tastes of the American public, it combines exterior solidity with moderate price and road comfort. In the US, its cost is from 25 thousand dollars, and a Limited-edition car with a V-shaped "eight", as we have in the test, costs 32 thousand there. We have - almost 50. The unpopularity in Europe is obvious - without the Explorer engine, the Explorer is too expensive to operate. In our trips, even with an economical style in the countryside, more than 12 l / 100 km was obtained. Well, city traffic jams do not allow spending less than 18 l / 100 km. Those who like to use the dynamic qualities of the car can safely add 30–40% - in this case, 85 liters of the “ninety second” is barely enough for 400 km. Of course, our gas prices are not European yet, but thousand-ruble refueling pretty much ruined our travel budget.

Compared to the previous generation, independent pendants “in a circle” allowed the Explorer to “lose weight” by 140 kg, reducing unsprung masses. This, of course, should have the best effect on comfort and handling, but …

Comfortable Ford suspension settings allowed the photographer to take the largest number of sharp shots, but they would hardly seem optimal for the driver. On a winding suburban road with traditional waves, the Explorer kept confidence unlikely to reach 100 km / h. As soon as Ford crossed this mark, the control resembled a yacht’s struggle with a storm. The two-ton all-terrain vehicle swayed and strove to soar into the air in the most inappropriate place - all the efforts of the chassis to keep the wheels in constant contact with the road were in vain. If you put on this picture an empty, uninformative steering wheel and a viscous long-stroke brake pedal, then going faster than 120 km / h is already scary. Right, the limitation of the “maximum speed” of 160 km / h seems to be a reasonable and not at all severe security measure, even for relatively smooth roads.

The acceleration dynamics of the lightest car in the test with the most powerful engine was supposed to push it to the leading position, but the five-speed automatic was pumped up. The logic of his switchings suited only with slow movement, and taking into account the significant superiority over competitors in power, the advantage over them in acceleration was not impressive.

The driver's seat is made in the best American traditions with a "poker" gear selector on the steering column. The left steering column switch is overloaded with functions, but the leather seats are without fail with electric adjustment and memory. Wooden inserts in the interior diversify black leather and modest plastic. Both front and rear passengers of moderate dimensions are spacious. Even on the folding seats of the third row, a pair of adult passengers is comfortably placed.

Ground clearance and other parameters of geometric cross "Explorer" also inferior to competitors. He has lower rear suspension arms, the fuel tank and engine compartment are not protected. More often than not, the car struck the bumps with the rear bumper and a powerful towing device.

Three buttons on the front panel suggest automatic or forced connection of the front axle and lower gear. To enable the latter, you need to stop and select “neutral”, otherwise the machine will not execute your command. By the way, instead of the center differential, the Explorer has a multi-plate clutch that rigidly connects the front-wheel drive.

Ford Explorer 4.6 V8 LIMITED

Mitsubishi Pajero DI-D

The only one of the cars with a supporting body. He promises a minimum of weight and height, but in fact the Pajero is not the lowest and the heaviest. However, this heaviness is evenly distributed along the axes, and only with full load does the rear wheels have a large mass. A fair share of the load on the front adds a 3.2-liter turbodiesel, especially for Russia, released in the Euro II standard (instead of Euro III). This is less sensitive to fuel quality and at the same time a little more powerful.

The driver's seat "Pajero" is distinguished by a good range of adjustments and forms convenient for drivers of different physique. In addition, the front seats of the Mitsubishi are sprung, which makes the ride more comfortable.

Pajero pendants seemed the most comfortable. The car copes well with waves and chips of asphalt, can move at a moderate pace on a broken primer, while maintaining stability and contact of the wheels with the road. The energy intensity reserve for high-speed driving on rough terrain is not always enough, but as a compromise for all types of roads, the Mitsubishi deserves an excellent assessment.

Tires with a large tread pattern, which appeared on our car, corrected the character of the car, adding smoothness and felling. You feel heavy on the go, but there are few complaints about the Pajero engine - there is a small “turbo-yam”, but its edges are not steep at all.

On a small rise, the motor pulls even from 1000 rpm, but really comes to life after 1500. There is no point in spinning it above 4000 - the acceleration rate does not increase, and the noise already exceeds comfortable limits. Unfortunately, the lever of a mechanical box does not provide for quick switching - its selectivity requires getting used to. However, these problems disappear on the highway - in most cases, you can roll and accelerate in fifth gear. Fuel consumption is surprisingly modest - about 9 l / 100 km.

Both on asphalt and on a lane, the Super-Select transmission allows you to select the appropriate mode using a single lever. Rear-wheel drive - for clean asphalt, full with center differential - for slippery roads, full with differential lock and reduction gear - for gravel dumps. When one of the rear wheels soars into the air, the last reserve comes into play - a hard lock on the rear axle.

The spare wheel on the rear door freed up space in the trunk for a folding third row of seats. That's just the seat itself is extremely uncomfortable. The adult sits "legs apart."

Nissan Pathfinder 2.5 dCI

A promising newcomer from the Nissan finally arrived at us. This car is produced for both the American and European markets. Before, the Passfinder (in Russian, the Pathfinder) was the prerogative of America. In Europe, Nissan Terrano II / Terrano II used to perform in this class.

Of course, the designers of the new Nissan took into account most of the modern trends. The size of the Passfinder interior is noticeably larger than the Pajero. On the plus side is a rectangular luggage compartment and an impeccable folding scheme for the seats. We explain the small deficit of space above the driver’s head in the configuration: the sunroof conceals about 40 mm of height.

There are complaints about visibility from the driver's seat - the massive front pillars in the lower part significantly interfere at sharp turns and when parking maneuvers. In the back there is full scope and unexpected ease of landing due to the original shape of the doors, which expand significantly upward.

The third row of seats gracefully hides on the floor and, if necessary, is suitable for "full-size" passengers, although it is noticeably inferior to the "Ford" one. Lovers of traveling around the dirt roads will undoubtedly be pleased with the abundance of internal handles that you can grab onto on a bumpy road. But the cute air conditioning controls are not as convenient as they seem. Due to their low height, they are unsuitable to use.

Nissan does not share the Mitsubishi concept in terms of the supporting body - numerous independent suspension arms are attached to a separate frame, on which, in turn, the body is mounted. At the same time, the Passfinder was 140 kg lighter. Naturally, the new car also needed a new engine. With a working volume of 2.5 liters, the Nissan four-cylinder diesel engine develops power and torque greater than the 3.2-liter Mitsubishi engine, while fitting into the strict Euro IV standards.

The reckoning for high performance at high boost pressure is a narrow operating range, which nevertheless is successfully used by a five-speed automatic. On the road, the box rarely allows the tachometer needle to drop below 2000 rpm, lingering for a long time in lower gears, so the reaction of the car to the gas pedal is always very peppy. Fans of a more relaxed manner of management will have to take the selector in their hand and choose the fifth “ahead of schedule”. In the same way, a small and unusually sharp steering wheel for an all-terrain vehicle quickly destroys the stereotype of driving a large and heavy car. Nissan responds hastily to the driver’s actions.

Each coin has a flip side - in this case, it’s a smooth ride. Chips and small roughnesses of the highway are suddenly felt strongly in the cabin, but on the road the Nissan is kept as glued. There is enough energy intensity on a broken primer, but comfort again leaves much to be desired - the stiffness of the suspensions does not always replace large moves. The same is true in rough terrain - without the inclusion of electronic locks, a car with suspended wheels quickly becomes real estate.

The All-mode 4x4 all-wheel drive system offers all reasonable options: rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive with an interaxle differential, as well as a lock for the latter and a lower gear with a serious number of 2.6.

Nissan Pathfinder 2.5 dCI

Presented in the spring of 2005.

Engines: petrol V6 4.0 l (269 hp), diesel turbocharged 2.5 l (174 hp). In Russia, only diesel.

Transmissions: mechanical 6-speed and automatic 5-speed.

Options: XE, SE, LE.

Price in Russia: $ 44, 800 - 56, 450

TIRES SOLVE EVERYTHING?

What to put on an all-terrain vehicle? This task is especially difficult if you rarely have to drive on dirty primers.

The Michelin Pilot LTX, in which the Ford was shod, provided it with minimal rolling resistance, the lowest noise level and minimum passability in loose soil. Nissan’s compromise - Goodyear Wrangler HP helped him unlock his braking and handling potential on asphalt, but in the sand these tires were almost as helpless. Finally, the Mitsubishi, shod in the toothy “BF Goodrich T / A”, showed the best off-road results, but pretty much lost on the asphalt: the coupling qualities of the tires here do not hold water.

Set your priorities when choosing tires, because for our cars it is only 2% of the price.

WHERE TO CHILD STORE?

The spare wheel of an all-terrain vehicle is a big, heavy thing and does not want to fit well. There are two main ways of fastening - to the back door (if it opens to the side) or under the boot floor from below - then the door can be "lifted up" in a light way. “Ford” and “Nissan” went the second way, providing a passenger circuit that protects “from the rain”, by the way, with additionally opened glass. Mitsubishi preferred a spare tire on the door, saving space for the trunk.

Image

The design with a spare wheel on the rear door is the simplest, but not every current driver will cope with a 30-pound wheel, which must be raised to the level of the chest. Horizontal "underground" spare parts are equipped with a mechanism for raising and lowering and formally require less effort for removal and installation. In fact, pulling the wheel out from under the car is not at all easier. And with a flat rear and a dirt road, this is a task at all, stimulating creative thinking and innovative word-formation.
