In the late 1960s, the specialized Western press heatedly discussed the first flights of supersonic airliners - the Soviet Tu-144 and the Anglo-French Concord. In the opinion of a layman, cars copied one another, which provided food for rumors of plagiarism. Passions subsided when experts entered the discussion and explained: the external similarity is explained by the laws of aerodynamics, similar flight requirements, similar materials and technologies. In fact, the Tupolev is larger and is able to take 40 passengers more, the Concord is more comfortable, each has its own engines - in a word, they are completely different.

A similar story, only, of course, on a smaller scale, happened when the Honda Accord and Mazda 6 debuted. Something elusive two "Japanese" resemble each other: either the shape of a false radiator grille, or the "cut of the eyes", or the falling line of the roof, forming a rapid profile … but are the cars really similar?

How important is the ability to file yourself! Having thrown open the massive door "Kon" …, sorry, "Chord", I dive into the darkness of the cabin. The very first touches of real steering wheel skin, the rich sound with which the doors close, the delicate aroma of the interior … this immediately creates a certain mood. The Honda’s most effective method of seduction was reserved for dessert: as soon as the key gets into the ignition, the coals of the appliances flare up in the black “hole” of the front panel. Frankly, before starting the car, I have not once admired the sight!

The meeting with Mazda was completely different: the Six did not have time, or perhaps did not try to make the first impression so vivid. I will not persuade: the day has exceeded the middle, and there’s still a shoot ahead - we must hurry! Hastily adjusting the seat, I turn on the gear and pour into the metropolitan car jelly.

Gradually, very delicately, the Six is ​​gaining sympathy: light gray velor seats and the combined two-color design of the Mazda's front panel give the cabin more hospitality, especially in contrast to the prim Honda. The eye rejoices at the central “aluminum” console, and the hands - at the right hand drive of the optimal section.

As a family car, both Honda and Mazda will arrange most picks. There is more than enough space in the back seat for the comfortable movement of two adults, but the three of them will be quite tolerable. Honda slightly upset the rear wheel arch with a pressing doorway, which did not allow to put the “five” for the convenience of landing. But there is plenty of space above your head. Entering the Mazda’s interior is a bit easier, but it’s no longer possible to settle in just as easily - space is taken away by a low roof, and racks hang from the side. Although honestly this pressure is rather psychological.

Formally, the trunk of the “six” is more than 50 liters. However, as our measurements showed, the difference in favor of the Mazda is not so great, although it is ahead in terms of ease of loading and the advantageous configuration. But in the luggage compartment of the "Accord" there are belts that are convenient to fix all sorts of things. For example, a bottle of non-freezing liquid. Aircraft, by the way, also undergo anti-icing training …

CLIMB

Only some 50 kilometers from Moscow to the north, and the cottages give way to quiet villages, the distance between which grows in proportion to the distance from the capital. Long lines along narrow, winding paths among the hills of the Dmitrov Ridge are perhaps the best test of handling.

At the wheel of the "Chord" you feel confident and calm. Another blind turn with snow blades and ice under the wheels? It's okay, we can handle it. The car steers clearly and reliably thanks to the excellent operation of the traditional hydraulic booster. Enter the turn faster than common sense requires - the stabilization system comes into play, reminding yourself of an alarmingly flashing icon. ABS works very delicately and only when it is really needed, without chirping idle. The car's suspension clearly tracks the profile of the road, but small bumps are transmitted to the body more than we would like.

It was enough to get behind the wheel of the Mazda and take the same pace, as it became clear how dissimilar the characters of the cars were. The ardent "six" provokes an aggressive and active ride, but the possibilities of the chassis here are not unlimited. It is easier to tear the car into a skid, although it will not be too difficult for an experienced driver to get out of it - first of all, thanks to the DSC stabilization system. Unlike the Honda, which behaves confidently even without an electronic collar, the Mazda with the DSC turned off, especially with active driving, starts to strain a little. But I don’t want to bring ABS up to operation once again - a characteristic crunch from under the hood gives a rough echo to the brake pedal.

AUTOPILOT

The five-speed automatic “Accord” was pleasantly surprised by the quick reaction to the accelerator pedal. The engine torque in city mode is enough to confidently accelerate in III and IV gears without switching to lower. Only in kickdown mode does the car freeze for a split second, then to please the driver with vigorous acceleration.

Unlike many other “automatic machines” with the possibility of manual switching, the Honda box, as they say, is “honest”. If you chose manual mode and turned on, for example, first gear, be sure - the box will allow you to unscrew the motor right up to the cut-off at a maximum of 6800 rpm and will not switch to second itself. With dynamic driving, manual mode also provides effective engine braking. In short, the sensations are as close as possible to those that arise when driving with the usual "mechanics". Therefore, from time to time with pleasure I took control of the transmission myself. By the way, Honda is one of the few companies producing transmissions on its own - now it’s clear why.

The Mazda box does not offer revelations. There are only four gears, but this does not interfere with quickly responding to driver commands. Sometimes even sharply. When you give the “six” spurs, the box, without hesitation, goes one step lower, although it might well have stayed “upstairs”. Even more noticeable, this feature is manifested in two additional modes - Low and Sport. The point here, of course, is not only the “automatic”, but also less powerful than the opponent’s motor.

So which car is better? The answer to this question already sounded at the very beginning. They are different. It’s easy to feel it on paper, looking into the characteristics. The European Accord is produced with engines up to 190 hp, Mazda is sold with engines up to 166 hp, and the latter can only be purchased with a manual gearbox. The spread in prices also indicates a different positioning: the basic “six” is offered for $ 22, 350, while for the “Honda” you will have to pay a minimum of $ 26, 900. Yet, “Accord” and “six” are often on the same list when it comes to buying D-class car.

Mazda seems more playful and not so pretentious. Compared to the Honda, it has a slightly more noisy engine, a bit easier finishing materials and less well-trained handling. But the trick is that sometimes we like exactly imperfect things. Some appreciate pedantry and punctuality, others - recklessness and emotionality; Someone cares about the schedule, for others, onboard service. What is closer to you?

Mazda 6 - charming, friendly, perfect for the role of a family car. In terms of price / quality ratio - one of the most seductive offers on the market.
