With age, Rio loses very little in price (only about 10% per year) - the low cost of maintenance and spare parts. Future owners are also attracted by the guarantee conditions: since 2003, it has been increased to 5 years or 120 thousand km. But in general, a successful car still has not gotten rid of some diseases, and not all flaws are eliminated under warranty. True, in some places it is possible to "lay the straw", because in Russia this machine is already the fifth year, and considerable experience has been gained.

For a Russian buyer, the question of choosing an engine is not worth it: only one and a half liter KIA Rio roll off the AvtoTOR conveyor. The only serious illness of these engines is offensively banal: the timing belts do not withstand the 80 thousand km allotted by the manufacturer - sometimes they break, not even passing 60 thousand. Note that motor repair in this case does not fall under the guarantee: it does not apply to the timing belt. Therefore, it is reasonable to reduce the belt replacement interval to 50 thousand km - this is what they do in many services. The rollers are changed as necessary, usually to 100 thousand km (with the second belt replacement). There are no other problems with the engine; single failures mainly occur during the warranty period, therefore, eliminate them for free.

Candles are a separate item of expenses for Russians. On Rio, they serve an average of 10 thousand km - from maintenance to maintenance. The instruction prescribes the "95th" gasoline, but the "92nd", less rich in additives, is quite suitable for Rio.

The low front overhang and the aluminum pan immediately suggest the need for strong steel engine protection. It is really needed, and most of all - the corrugation (bellows) of the exhaust system. This is the lowest point of the front end, but it is the most tender.

For the most accurate drivers, it serves up to 80 thousand km (this is almost a record!), "Dummies" manage to burn it in a matter of weeks. The guarantee for the unit is solid - 3 years or 100 thousand km, but its conditions do not include natural wear and tear and violation of the operating rules.

The root of all "operational" troubles is a miscalculation in ergonomics: the moment you turn on the clutch on the pedals is practically not felt. An experienced driver, focusing on hearing, will quickly adapt. Inexperienced in two counts will burn the lining. The first sign of trouble is the appearance of effort on the pedals. This means that the release bearing guide grease is already “fried”. If you drive further in the same manner, the effort on the pedals will become, as on the ZIL-130. The final stage is clutch jamming: do not squeeze the pedal with both legs. Replacing the drive cable, of course, does not produce results. It happens that not only the linings crack, but also the basket, and the metal even melts in places. Often, along with the prematurely killed clutch, it is necessary to change the bullied by its fragments or the overheated flywheel.

But the gearboxes, both “mechanics” and “automatic”, work almost flawlessly. Isolated cases of warranty repair of the MCP were associated with the failure of the synchronizers (the first or second gear did not turn on), but there were no defects after the warranty ended. A few years ago there were problems with locking the automatic gearbox selector: the reverse gear was also engaged when the car moved forward, from which the gearbox failed. Now the Rio with automatic transmission can be blamed only for the weak dynamics, but not in the absence of reliability. Oil in both boxes is changed every 40 thousand km: 75W90 GL-4 in the "mechanics" and Dexron III in the "automatic".

The bearings of the front hub are tapered, with a preload, which is regulated by the selection of washers. It is better to change them in a company service, where there are washers and a special device. Incorrectly adjusted bearings may not live up to the next MOT. If the master did everything “according to science”, the unit will serve 100-150 thousand km. The rear bearings are also tapered, but with a clearance. Almost every MOT has to be adjusted if you care about the brakes: in order to clean the rear mechanisms from dust and dirt, you will have to remove the drum with the bearing. The rear bearings serve more than 100 thousand km.

When tightening the wheel nuts, do not overdo it, otherwise you risk breaking the threads on the studs. Others manage to crank the studs in the hub, having torn off the slots - then simply replacing the studs will not work. The tightening torque of the nuts is not more than 8 kgf.m.

The brakes work perfectly provided that the pad auto-mechanism (back) is regularly cleaned and the handbrake is used. For those who forget to pull the lever (usually on machines with automatic transmission), the cable may become sour after a year or two or 30–40 thousand km. With frequent use, the handbrake lives about twice as long.

But ABS on Rio does not work in the best way: efficiency is low, but the pedal turns into a jackhammer. And the system does not shine with reliability: after two winters, the sensors begin to junk. The wire can drive away both in the connector and in the place of termination in the sensor. Therefore, it is worth protecting anticorrosive all vulnerabilities.

With steering so far no problem. Not only the rail, but also the tips of the rods without complaints can withstand 120–150 thousand km.

The Rio suspension as a whole does not cause trouble and does not require large expenses, except for the rear shock absorbers. The sleeve of their upper mounting to the body breaks up pretty quickly - for 20-40 thousand kilometers. Replacing an expensive shock absorber is only assembled, preferably a pair. Otherwise, everything is at the level: the rear silent blocks serve more than 150 thousand km, the spherical bearings of the front suspension - 60–100 thousand km (the lever is changed in the assembly), the bushings and struts of the front stabilizer - 60–80 thousand km. Front struts (including their supports) withstand more than 120 thousand km.

You can turn off the battery and “light” without problems - most likely, you will need it. The battery does not live here for long. Either the storage conditions are to blame, or some other secret forces, but the battery can withstand the 6-month warranty, can withstand it, and then with luck. The most successful specimens died two years later.

Electricity "Rio" is poorly adapted to Russian conditions. Most connectors are not protected from dirt and moisture, so they begin to turn green in the first spring, and over time, the contacts turn into dust. It’s good if this is a sound signal - you can determine the disorder by the sound. With heated rear window, the process is dangerously delayed. At first, its connector (common and for powering the rear “janitor”) begins to melt, then the wire insulation burns, and as a result, the “plus” closes to ground, burning a fuse. Do not try to put a "bug" - with it and not far from the fire. It is enough to connect the circuit directly, without a connector, and the connection point is reliably protected from moisture.
