ZIS-5, one of the most popular cars of the Great Patriotic War, has been producing the Moscow Stalin Plant (ZIS) since 1934. Machine with a lifting capacity of 3 tons, with a six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 5555 cm3 with a capacity of 73 liters. with. at 2300 rpm and a four-speed gearbox it was a deeply modernized AMO-3. The latter, in fact, was a copy of the American "Car".
Drivers called the truck “three-ton” and “Zakhar Ivanovich” (from ZIS) - abbreviated “Zakhar”. ZIS-5 was reputed to be reliable and easy to maintain. By the way, he became the first domestic machine, which was exported back in the 1930s - to Turkey, Iran, the Baltic states.
In addition to the base model, elongated (base - 4420 mm, against the standard 3810 mm) versions were produced: ZIS-11 - chassis for firefighters, ZIS-12 and ZIS-14 - for specialized vehicles. During the war, such were installed, in particular, anti-aircraft and searchlight installations.
In the 1930s, the ZIS-13 gas generator and the ZIS-10 truck tractor were produced. Several semi-caterpillar versions were built (during the war ZIS-42 and ZIS-42M), buses and vans. Four-wheel drive ZIS-32 released less than two hundred. There was a triaxial modification of the ZIS-6. The first BM-13 rocket launchers, the legendary Katyushas, were mounted on its chassis.
