You should not be surprised that the carburetor engine - though in good hands - is often more stable in performance than the injection engine. The main thing in it is the purity of the nozzles and other metering elements. But "fussing" with the machine is not to everyone's liking, because the toxicity parameters "go away", not always following simple logic.

So it was with the customer who had seen the seven, but by no means launched the “seven” with the VAZ 2103 engine: toxicity at low revs is normal, but at high speeds it does not decrease, but grows. This is a “bell”: the engine is still not eating oil, it is quite satisfied with its power and economy, but it has already warned of close problems.

The tuning of the Seven engine began by checking the toxicity of exhaust gases with and without crankcase ventilation. This makes it possible to understand how worn the engine is - and because of this it “smothers” itself with combustion products. Here is an example: with a disconnected ventilation hose - 1% СО, and with a connected one - 5% СО. It’s bad: the motor is badly battered, “driving” toxicity into the norm is not easy. A good motor has a difference of about 1% CO.

If toxicity increases at higher speeds when ventilation is turned off, then the culprit, of course, is the carburetor. We clean it, adjust, set the ignition. As a rule, indicators return to normal.


Connect the ventilation. Carbon monoxide at high speeds again a lot? Then it naturally begs to impoverish the adjustment of the main dosing system of the primary chamber. Increase the diameter of the hole of the main air jet. Carburetors "Ozone-2105", as a rule, from 1.8 to 1.9 mm, and in 2107 from 1.5 to 1.7 mm. Often lower the fuel level in the float chamber - by about 1 mm. And this is not enough? We change the composition of the mixture in transition mode with a trimming screw, having previously removed the plug (see. Fig.). And all this - in several stages, with toxicity control.

Even this did not solve the problems? Then reduce the main fuel jet from 1.12 to 1.07 (carburetor 2107). For the 2105, this jet is already 1.07. You will not find less in the store. They say that some craftsmen make their own jets - this is “information for consideration”.

If the Solex carburetor is under the hood, the rules of the game are the same. We reduce the fuel level in the float chamber by increasing the gap between the floats and the gasket to 5 mm. But with the main air jet there is a problem: there are no emulsion tubes with a jet greater than 165. What should I do? Drilled it. A diameter of 1.9–2.0 mm is usually sufficient. In a slightly better position, the owners of Solex models 21051-30 (on the "classics") - here you can install the main air jet from a carburetor 2108 or 21083.

But the lean mixture makes the engine run erratically. It happens that the CO is normal, and the hydrocarbons of the CH, due to missing flashes in the cylinders, are "fooling around"! What to do?

Adjusted the gaps in the candles. Then they reduced the installation angle of ignition timing by 5 ° so that the lean mixture is more stable ignited.

In the contact ignition system, we increase the gaps in the candles from 0.6 to 0.8 mm - the system will cope, and the combustion will become more complete.

Sometimes the mixture is initially depleted of air sucked through through cracks in the dilapidated hose of the vacuum amplifier, leaks in the joints of the collector, etc. We eliminate these malfunctions immediately so as not to wander in the three pines.

Measuring compression. If it is reduced, you can turn off the engine oil by adding 25% of the mineral water MS-20. Crankcase emissions are reduced. So you can drive six to seven thousand kilometers, but before changing the oil, you should thoroughly flush the system.

How to extend the life of a new engine? Do not “save” on oil! Somehow the 2103 engine with a mileage of 60 thousand km came to us, and the cylinder diameters were already "spaced" by 0.15 mm, the main journals were at the limit, the camshaft was hanging. They found out: a diligent owner drove suspiciously cheap oil.

But once, on a VAZ 2111 engine with a mileage of 208 thousand km, they changed the head gasket - and did not find any noticeable wear! True, the owner paid more for oil - high-quality synthetic.
