They are produced by Fredestein, a small but notable company on the European market. The latest development - the winter non-studded tire “Vintrak Ikstrem” (Wintrac Xtreme) carries the speed index W, that is, it is designed for 270 km / h! The journalists were able to try a novelty in the business in the Swiss Alps, where the organizers prepared snow and ice tracks. All-wheel drive Audi TT and Mercedes SLK 200 Compressor with a maximum speed of 230 km / h became test cars. However, to assess the handling, braking and acceleration characteristics and lower speed, it’s enough for the eyes, and 270 km / h is more likely a safety margin for autobahns: after all, Dutch tires are created not only for snow and ice, but also for asphalt.

Fears that wide “skating rinks” on a relatively light roadster will quickly become clogged with snow did not materialize. Confident, with a slight slip acceleration, and here is the first turn. Yeah, it glides - but quite predictably. It is not forbidden to even play gas, since the response to the pedal is instant. With braking, too, everything is in order: ABS and tires "understand" each other pretty well. I could not resist and conducted the “Russian” test - for passability: in the snow you can move quite confidently on the bumper and even maneuver. Journalists were not allowed into the big snowdrifts, although there was a helicopter nearby - in which case I would have pulled it out. By the way, he delivered one of the cars to the track.

But let's listen to what its creators are talking about the new tire. Two thousand Wintrac Xtreme lamellas can be divided into two groups: even central notches give good adhesion to the snow and ice surfaces in a rectilinear movement, and zigzag lateral ones work better when cornering, limiting the compliance of the pieces. For an optimal balance of handling and grip, the side slots have less depth and width.

Three longitudinal grooves and wide V-shaped slots in the central block of checkers work not only for drainage, but also for patency - in snow, Z-shaped blocks behave like hooks. On the asphalt, the tires turned out to be very quiet - thanks to the different-sized tread blocks and lamellas of different thicknesses that knock down the resonance. And the designers also paid attention to the internal edges of the side pieces cut at an angle: their zigzag line is also a tribute to silence.

Compared to previous models, the composition of the mixture has also improved: rubber-silica bonds are stronger than steel, reducing wear and improving wet grip. And the high maximum tire speed required a particularly strong frame - a two-layer, made of nylon, with optimized styling technology. The Dutch check the absence of deformations of the frame at high speeds using a special infrared laser.
